Places to see in ( Meribel - France )
Méribel is a ski resort in the Tarentaise Valley in the French Alps, situated near the town of Moûtiers. Méribel refers to three neighbouring villages in the Les Allues commune of the Savoie département of France, near the town of Moûtiers (45.401°N 6.5655°E), called Méribel Centre, Méribel-Mottaret and Méribel Village. The villages are within the Vanoise National Park and a part of the Les Trois Vallées interlinked ski system.
Méribel Les Allues is a ski resort that was developed adjacent to the traditional hamlet of Morel, with its centre situated at about 1400 metres above sea level. It was founded by a Scotsman, Colonel Peter Lindsay, who was looking for a new site for winter sports away from the ski resorts of Austria and Germany, because of the growing strength of the Nazi regime. In 1936, he visited the town of Les Allues for the first time. He then imagined how the town could become a ski resort. Firstly, he decided to create a property company in order to develop finances strong enough to build the resort. In 1938, the first lift was placed above Les Allues. A year later, he began the construction of the first chalets and hotels in the hamlet of Méribel. Three years later, the war would stop the development of the resort, but when it was over, development continued.
Lindsay used specialized architects, Paul Grillo, Grand Prix de Rome (1937), and his partner Christian Durupt, so that all buildings would be in harmony with the Savoyard style. For this to be realised, wood and stone must be used for the walls, with slanted slate roofs. In 1950, the Burgin-Saulire gondola was built to link the resort to Courchevel. Lindsay's family continue to hold a financial stake in the resort, and his grandchildren still ski in the resort to this day. Lindsay's ashes and those of his wife are scattered on the Burgin mountain.
The Tarentaise Valley has the biggest concentration of world-class ski resorts in the world. Most well known neighbour systems are Paradiski (Les Arcs, La Plagne) and Espace Killy (Val-d'Isère and Tignes). A weekly lift ticket in Méribel/Les Trois Vallées offers a choice to ski one day in each of the other two systems mentioned. There were once plans to interlink all systems and resorts to create the - by far - largest ski area in the world. However that vision was ended with the creation of the Vanoise National Park.

How a snow machine is combatting the warm winter in the French Alps
SHOTLIST :
Meribel
1. Various of cable cars and people with skis
2. SOUNDBITE: (French) Pascal Tournier, director of Meribel ski area
I believe that nowadays when we speak of artificial snow we speak of economic life, but this year we can speak even of economic survival.
3. Various of skiers
4. SOUNDBITE: (French) Pascal Tournier, director of Meribel ski area
The interest of snow machines is to guarantee there would be snow. And as you can see today, you have artificial snow here, here there and there, everything white around us is man made snow.
5. Various of skiers
6. SOUNDBITE: (French) Pascal Tournier, director of Meribel ski area
Artificial snow has a price: today a square metre of snow costs one Euro (1.29 US dollars) with the investments (machinery etc) comes to two Euros (2.5 US dollars)
7. Snow boarder
8. SOUNDBITE: (English) Vox Pop Snowboarder (no name available)
It is wet, it is sugary; it is not very nice, is it, artificial snow?
9. SOUNDBITE: (English) Vox Pop (no name available)
They keep it going, so it is a good thing. It might use a lot of water, but it's a good thing.
10. More skiers around the base of a snow gun.
11. SOUNDBITE: (English) Vox Pop (no name available)
Because of the energy they consume in pumping up in making the artificial snow? Mmmh, I suppose there is a lot of embodied energy usage, but we'll have to find other ways of saving the planet won't we?
12. Various of skiers.
13. Cable car.
14. Stream and pan to snow factory
15. Ventilators in factory
16. Water pumped from the stream
17. Machines to make compressed air.
18. Control room, computers with mapping of all snow machines on slopes.
19. UPSOUND man saying (in French) When they are empty here it's that they are stopped, when the squares are full like there it's that they are ready to function.
20. Snow making system at work

21. Offices of Frapna, environmental organisation
22. SOUNDBITE: (French) Christoph Roulier, president Frapna Savoye (Environmental group)
It is not big, it is bigger, it is an explosion. At first it was an emergency solution, now it is a systematic usage of artificial snow. We can see it this year clearly: those resort who had no snow guns, could not work.
23. Documents and signature collection for different campaigns.
24. SOUNDBITE: (French) Christoph Roulier, president Frapna Savoye (Environmental group)
Water stock in the rivers, the building of reservoirs is really damaging for the landscape, and the third point is that for using this snow the mounds have to be really levelled, so the ski companies have the bulldozers coming into the mountain to remove everything in the way.

25. Various evening meeting with the ski slopes maintenance team.
26. SOUNDBITE: (French) Snow car driver, No name available
This is a photo of the slope taken today; we can see the spots where we need to put more snow with the machines
27. Various of snow machines going out
29. Various of snow machines
30. SOUNDBITE: (French) Falco Baudon, Samoens Tourist office director
The investments in snow guns relies on the sale of ski passes, so the success and development of a ski resort is related to these investments and these investments allow the development of skiing activities all through the season.
31. Various of snow machines at night
32. Wide of mountains at night
LEAD IN:
Global warming poses a serious threat to Alpine ski resorts and the regional economies that depend on them according to a recent report by the OECD.
