1940s SOUTH AFRICA TRAVELOGUE KIMBERLY DIAMOND MINES & GOLD MINES 43254
Produced in 1948 by Louis De Rochemont Associates, RICHES OF THE VELD is an educational film that gives a rosy portrait of South Africa in the era before apartheid ended. Directed by Bill Colleran, the movie vividly showcases the immense mineral and agricultural wealth of the nation, and includes a visit to the Kimberly Diamond mines. The film features shots of Johannesburg, Kimberly and Cape Town, and also shows a gold refinery and gold mine, vineyards, orange groves, and cattle ranches in the rich Veld.
The Veld, also spelled veldt, is a type of wide open rural landscape in Southern Africa. Particularly, it is a flat area covered in grass or low scrub, especially in the countries of South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia. A certain sub-tropical woodland ecoregion of Southern Africa has been officially defined as the Bushveld by the World Wide Fund for Nature. Trees are found only in a few places—frost, fire, and grazing animals allow grass to grow but prevent the growth of trees.

In this video I show you two of my favorite jewelery studios in Cape Town.
I'm here at the Black Betty Jewelery studio. What I like, is that there are bold and delicate pieces to choose from. This studio works on an appointment only basis, but it's worth the effort. You will see some of Black Betty jewelery in other stores, but you get the most variety from here. Alternatively, you can view the collection online
Black Betty is South African designed.
Here is Olive Green Cat which houses Philippa Green. Her designs are very bold. She is is especially known for her combination of metal and perspex. For more details click here

South Africa's Illegal Gold Mines
In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country.
However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity.
Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked in before they shut down.
The lack of policing in the mines has seen the practice go on largely unabated. However, in the absence of law enforcement, the extensive network of abandoned mines beneath the region has become an arena to deadly gang warfare between rival factions. VICE News visited illegal mines near Johannesburg, to meet the Zama Zamas risking life and limb everyday in the violent struggle for South Africa's illegal gold.

Tretchikoff's Chinese Girl is actually a South African - world's most reproduced print
Interview with Monika Pon (nee Sing-Lee), the model for Tretchikoff's Chinese Girl, in her home in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Chinese Girl portrait sale nears £1m mark
Vladimir Tretchikoff's painting Chinese Girl, thought to be the world's most reproduced print, has sold at auction in London for £982,050 ($1,500).
The sum, which includes a 12% buyer's premium, was around twice what had been predicted by auction house Bonhams.
It was thought the portrait of a young Chinese girl with green-hued skin and ruby lips would fetch up to £500,000.
It was bought by British businessman and jeweller Laurence Graff and will go on public display in South Africa.
According to a Bonhams representative, the painting will be exhibited, alongside the rest of the diamond retailer's art collection, at the Delaire Graff Estate, near Stellenbosch in the Western Cape.
The sale, the spokesman added, fetched more than double the highest price - £384,000 - previously raised at auction by a Tretchikoff work.
Tretchikoff, who grew up in Russia and Shanghai, eventually settled in South Africa in 1946 and completed the Chinese Girl in Cape Town in 1953.
His model was Monika Sing-Lee, then 17, whom he spotted working at her uncle's launderette in Sea Point, Cape Town.
In his 1973 memoir Pigeon's Luck, the artist said he had put his heart and soul into a painting he hoped had caught the essence of Chinese womanhood.
Its popularity led to Tretchikoff, who died in 2006, being labelled the king of kitsch - though his foundation describes him as the people's painter.

Cape Town | South Africa | 2014 | 14min
To push through the streets is the ultimate freedom. But what happens when the streets do not welcome you? Or get you killed? Scorning their government-built joke of a skate park which is too dangerous to use, the heroes of Jas Boude leave the Cape Flats ghetto – where Table Mountain remains mockingly out of reach – to infiltrate the CBD in search of a feeling and a power denied. Jaw-dropping cinematography and astute political conscience present a city which works for a few in this must-see short film. ~ Encounters International Documentary Film Festival
