Rothesay...Ilse of Bute
Rothesay is a smart Victorian seaside resort and the main town on the east side of Isle of Bute.
This highly accessibly town is very traditional and good looking with signs of its Victorian heritage including a splendid Victorian frontage cradling the romantic Rothesay Bay. Dominating the shoreline amongst the glorious esplanade gardens is the refurbished Isle of Bute Discovery Centre, a unique 1920s circular structure of cast iron and glass, now incorporating a cinema, theatre and many interactive displays as well as showcasing the best of Bute.
Visitors can also explore the impressive Rothesay Castle, its dungeons, thick outer walls and grand hall which are all now fully restored. Just behind it sits the fascinating Bute Museum.
To the north of Rothesay, through the small community of Port Bannatyne, lies Ettrick Bay, Bute’s most accessible beach, which is a relative safe haven for able swimmers.

Arrival of the Waverley at Rothesay, Isle of Bute
This is the 70th anniversary of the launch of the Waverley paddle steamer, the last seagoing passenger carrying paddle steamer in the world.
PS Waverley, built in 1946, she sailed from Craigendoran on the Firth of Clyde to Arrocharon Loch Long until 1973. Bought by the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society (PSPS), she has been restored to her 1947 appearance and now operates passenger excursions around the British coast.
Waverley is powered by a three-crank diagonal triple-expansion marine steam engine built by Rankin & Blackmore, Engineers, Eagle Foundry, Greenock, Scotland. It is rated at 2,100 IHP and achieved a trial speed of 18.37 knots (34.02 km/h; 21.14 mph) at 57.8 rpm. Passengers can watch these engines from passageways on either side of the engine room.
The main crank is solidly attached to both paddle wheels so they cannot turn independently of each other. The Waverley therefore has a much larger turning circle than modern ferries.
Primarily based in the Clyde, Waverley spends 6 weeks between September and October cruising the Bristol Channel, the Solent and the Thames before returning to the Clyde for two sailings in October.
Rothesay Castles dates back to the early 13th century and is remarkably well preserved in spite of its age. Built by the Stewart family to defend against invading Norwegian fleets, Rothesay’s immense circular curtain wall makes it unique in Scotland.

And what a relief for the blokes! For some reason, they moved the Victorian arcade and let the men get wet on their business trips - my Grandpapa would not have approved!

St Mary's Chapel and Well, Rothesay, Isle of Bute
St. Mary's medieval chapel, Isle of Bute. This was apparently the chancel of the medieval parish chapel originally, according to CANMORE. The ruins have been fairly recently re-roofed providing protection for the already weathered tombs inside. Remains of the holy well is to be seen across the road.

You Won't Believe What They Have Done To The Abandoned Ghost Ship !
This abandoned ghost ship has been turned into turned in to the largest open-air Art Gallery in the UK.
Introducing the TSS Duke of Lancaster.
It is a railway steamer passenger ship that operated in Europe from 1956 to 1979, together with her two sisters, The Duke of Argyll and Duke of Rothesay.
The 4,450 ton, 1,800 passenger steamer operated as a passenger ferry on the Heysham-Belfast route and as a cruise ship calling at a variety of European ports from Spain to Norway for the better part of two decades.
The TSS Duke of Lancaster arrived near Mostyn Docks in August 1979 and is currently beached and spend the past 30 years rusting away on the River Dee at north-east Wales.
Her intended use as a static leisure center and market was relatively short-lived; in the early 80s she was known as ‘The Fun Ship’ and known for the vintage arcade games covering the whole of the car deck.
In 2012 several local arcade game collectors made a deal with Solitaire Liverpool Ltd and purchased most of the coin-operated machines at the time The Fun Ship closed.
Visitors today will find it colored by bright and surreal works by graffiti artist all over the world. The idea is to transform the ship into the biggest open-air art gallery in the UK and so far eight paintings have been added by a host of international graffiti artist including works by French artist GOIN, Fin DAC from Ireland and Hungarian Mr. Zero.
