British Pub Tips
While traveling through England, every night I’m eating at pubs and restaurants I recommend in my England guidebook. And I have to say, the eating has been excellent. Here’s a peek at the Dolphin Pub in Canterbury. (Notice the energy — things feel pretty good in England wherever we’ve gone.)
We’re just finishing our third TV episode in England this month, and we’re coming home with three brilliant shows. As usual, elements I really like need to be deleted, as 30 minutes of TV is only 3,000 words. Here’s the text that was in our Southeast England script but had to be pulled:
“England’s pubs offer a warm, friendly welcome and, for many, an essential part of any visit to Britain. Pub is short for public house — it's the neighborhood's extended living room. It's a multi-generational affair and, while children aren't served beer, the entire family is welcome. Whether you're drinking or eating, don't wait to be served. Go to the bar to order.
England loves its brews. Each village seems to have its own microbrew. Beer aficionados go for the real English ales and bitters. They're from the long-handled pumps literally hand-drawn from kegs in the cellar. For a lighter, colder, and carbonated brew — ask for a lager. They fizz out of the short tap handles.
The standard serving is a full pint. While women routinely order a half pint, when a man does, it can make you the butt of jokes. But, if you don’t know the various beers and want to double your experience (and can endure the ridicule), ordering by the half pint (which costs exactly half as much as a full pint) lets you double your beer-exploration experience.”

Sandgate is a village in the Folkestone and Hythe Urban Area in the Shepway district of Kent, England. In 2004, the village re-acquired civil parish status. The civil parish shares the boundaries of Folkestone Sandgate ward, at 2.17 km². It is the site of Sandgate Castle, a Device Fort. H.G. Wells lived at Spade House, and it was also the birthplace of comedian Hattie Jacques.
The Morcheeba song The Sea is written about the beachside bar 'Bar Vasa'. Sandgate Hotel appeared on the Channel 4 programme Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares on 27 February 2006. Other pubs include The Ship Inn, The Providence Inne, The Clarendon Inn and The Royal Norfolk Hotel. Sandgate was an urban district from 1894 to 1934 (having previously been part of Cheriton parish). It was added to Folkestone in 1934.
The Sandgate branch railway line was opened in 1874 and closed to passengers in 1951. Little of the infrastructure now remains, but it is still possible to see the remains of a tall overbridge at the bottom of Hospital Hill. Sandgate has become known for Dave the Dolphin, seen out in the bay between Folkestone and Hythe. Sandgate is the location of the Shorncliffe Redoubt, a Napoleonic era earthwork fort associated with Sir John Moore and the 95th Regiment of Foot, known as the 95th Rifles.
St Paul's Church lies next to the Saga building, which is built on the site of Embrook House. Sandgate Primary School lies on Coolinge Lane between the Folkestone School for Girls and Eversley College. The old school building is located in the village on Sandgate Road close to Spade House. Folkestone Rowing Club is in Sandgate. There are a number of pubs in Sandgate, including The Ship, The Providence Inne and The Earl of Clarendon. Inn Doors opened on Aug 28th 2015. This is a micropub offering local beers and ciders.
The Hub bicycle shop closed in 2014. Its premises have now been split between the Loaf coffee shop and the Ship Inn. As of Sept 2015, the half now managed by the Ship was undergoing refurbishment. The Brisbane suburb with the same name is named after the town. There is also a Brisbane suburb called Shorncliffe, which is adjacent to Sandgate.

Howletts Wild Animal Park, Kent, England
Howletts Wild Animal Park near Canterbury, Kent was established in 1957 by John Aspinall as a private zoo, and expanded with the purchase of an estate at Port Lympne, near Hythe, Kent in 1973.
Howletts was eventually opened to the public in 1975, with Port Lympne Wild animal Park opening to the public the following year.
These open park zoos, under the umbrella of the John Aspinall Foundation, specialise in breeding of rare and endangered species, and where possible, reintroducing them to the wild.
The Aspinall Foundation, which works in conjunction with Howletts and Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks, is an internationally renowned animal conservation charity set up by John Aspinall in 1984, and now run by his son, to promote wildlife conservation.
Howletts Wild Animal Park has lots of good reviews on the web, so we were rather disappointed when we made a visit while on holiday in the area, in that it’s not as spectacular for the visiting public as Colchester zoo or Longleat wildlife Safari Park in Bath; and we have been spoilt by the zoos in France, which are spectacular.
The video only shows a selection of the animals at the park, those that were easy to film. However, the Aspinall Foundation puts the animals interests, welfare, health and safety first; and the enjoyment of the visiting public second. So the animals are not on display for the benefits of the public, they are given their dignity and privacy, and in doing so you may not get as good a view of the animals as you would in other zoos and wildlife animal parks.
However, the Aspinall Foundation is doing a lot of good works for wildlife conservation and is involved in programmes to reintroduce rare and endangered species animals bred in captivity back into the wild. So their works should be commended and in this context Howletts and Port Lympne zoos are a worthy visit, and can make for an enjoyable and leisurely day out.

Mount Cook
Come hike the Hooker Valley and Sealy Tarns tracks with us. The incredible views are not to be missed! The snowcapped mountains are majestic, standing tall and mighty. The snow means it's some of the coldest nights we'll have in Blue Steel. See how bundled up we are, and what it's like to sleep in a van. #vanlife. Mount Cook aka Aoraki, Mount Cook is New Zealand's highest mountain, and just one of 19 peaks over 3000m tall. Mount Cook National Park is a rugged land of ice and rock; did you know that 40% of the park is covered by glaciers?!
Lake Pukaki
Everyone loves blue waters, right?! Take a look at the one of the bluest lakes in all of New Zealand - Lake Pukaki. The glacial feed to the lakes gives them a distinctive blue color, created by glacial flour, the extremely finely ground rock particles from the glaciers.
Lake Tekapo
Lake Tekapo was one of the hardest places to leave because of it's beauty. It also signified the end of our NZ adventures in Blue Steel. Watch the sunset with us at the top of Mount John, where the University of Canterbury's observatory is located. See one of NZ's most photographed churches: Church of the Good Shepard, which features an altar window that frames views of the lake and mountains. We also go ICE SKATING for the first time in a decade. Will adventureViV be able to stay upright on the ice? Watch to find out!

WWOOFing in Christchurch was one of the most amazing experiences we could have ever hoped for. We had an incredible host who made us feel like we were home. Hang out with us in the suburbs of Christchurch: Sumner, Lyttleton, and New Brighton. You’ll definitely enjoy the stunning views
Akaroa
Akaroa is a historic French and British settlement nestled in the heart of an ancient volcano. We decided to spend our final two weeks in New Zealand WWOOFing in Akaroa. To our delight, WWOOFing in Akaroa turned out to be more like housesitting! We absolutely LOVED it! We took care of the cats, chickens, and occasional B&B guest while spending two weeks in Akaroa. The best part of our stay: swimming with the dolphins! Thanks to Black Cat Cruises for an incredible experience - and for taking us out on such a fortuitous day where we’d see albatross, blue penguins and a male orca!!
Blue Steel
The #vanlife has been an unforgettable journey. We’ve explored the northernmost areas down to the southernmost areas of the North and South Islands in loyal and reliable Blue Steel. However, as our New Zealand travels were coming to an end, it was time to find new owners for Blue Steel. Do we succeed? Or will we have to drive Blue Steel off a cliff for some EPIC drone footage (and the insurance claim, of course)?! Find out in this episode!
