Full Story:
Britain's Prince William and his wife Catherine on Tuesday night enjoyed a gala dinner at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, ending their three-day trip to the United States.
The event was to mark the University of St. Andrews 600th anniversary.
The royal press office said the event supported scholarships and bursaries for students from under-privileged communities, new student sports facilities in St Andrews, investment in the university's media and science faculties and a lectureship in American Literature at St Andrews.
Earlier on Tuesday the couple paid a solemn visit to the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, greeted by a small but resolute crowd of admirers who withstood driving rain and wind for a glimpse of the royal pair.

STORYLINE:
Members of the British royal family attended a ceremony in Scotland on Thursday to mark Prince William's graduation from university.
William achieved a classification 2:1 (second class upper) in geography, after four years of studying for his Master of Arts degree.
Cheering crowds greeted his father the Prince of Wales and stepmother the Duchess of Cornwall as they arrived for the ceremony in St Andrews, Fife.
The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh arrived a few minutes later to see their grandson collect his academic award.
Ahead of the graduation ceremony, Prince William he said he was delighted he could share the occasion with his family.
The Prince also paid tribute to the Queen, who, it was feared, would be unable to attend after catching a bad cold earlier this week.
William, 23, expressed his sadness at leaving St Andrews in Fife, Scotland.
Clarence House announced that the Prince is to undertake work experience in the City and join a mountain rescue team after his summer break.
William, who is hoping to enlist in the army, has already passed his first round of tests to train at Sandhurst like his brother Prince Harry.
But prior to any military career, he will, among other things, spend time with a financial institution in London.
Prince Willam flies out to join the British Lions rugby squad next week at the invitation of coach Sir Clive Woodward.

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Katie Nicholl, Royal author:
Kate would go running in the morning and then turn up in the canteen - I say canteen, it was a terribly glorious canteen - and make sure William had caught her eye. By the end of the first term they were breakfasting together. By the end of the first year, they had something of a very close friendship and by their second year, well they'd moved in together, into this town house in Hope Street. They tucked themselves away, they ordered curries from the local curry shop at the end of the road, they called in DVDs. They had a very successful understanding that they would never be photographed together, they wouldn't be pictured holding hands. When they turned up together, it was separately. And that stood them in good stead, they could keep that relationship clandestine for the best part of a year.

I think people are incredibly snobby when it comes to her family, who seem hard-working and interesting and interested people. Historically, kings in this country have married out of their gene pool. In recent history, when they've married members of the aristocracy, I don't think it's worked out particularly well.

STORYLINE:
Buying stamps, chocolate and some light reading at a local shop, Prince William allowed the media a glimpse into his life as a college student at Scotland's St. Andrews University on Sunday.
As part of an agreement with the British press to provide information on William once every term in exchange for privacy while he completes his
studies, royal officials invited a reporter and photographers from the national Press Association news agency to follow him on Friday.
The prince, who is in the third year of a four-year degree course at Scotland's oldest university, said he was glad he had changed his major field
of study from art history to geography.
William said he had yet to complete his Christmas shopping, but wanted to get something special for his younger brother, Prince Harry, who has spent the last few months in Australia.
William picked up some college fare at the local convenience store, paying for his stamps, milk, potato chips, candy and two magazines with his own money.
As the shop's clerk rang up the pile of items, William joked, I'm stocking up for winter.
The prince also went to a driving range near St. Andrews' historic Old Course.
Concentrating hard, he hit the golf balls about 150 metres.

The story behind the romance as Prince WIlliam and Kate Middleton get engaged
(16 Nov 2010) PRINCE WILLIAM AND KATE MIDDLETON ENGAGED
Prince William and girlfriend Kate Middleton are engaged and will marry in London next year, royal officials said Tuesday (16 Nov 2010).
It's believed the pair will marry next spring or summer in London in a royal wedding that Britons have been eagerly awaiting for years.
The announcement by royal officials ends an on-again, off-again romance that began after the two met more than eight years ago as students at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
Scotland's most ancient university, St Andrews, was buzzing on the first day of term in September 2001, with people lining the streets for a glimpse of the new student in town.
In the event they needn't have worried.
Prince William, accompanied by his father, plunged straight into the crowd, provoking cries and screams from hundreds of teenage admirers.
It was good that they took their chance when they did, because this was to be William's only public walkabout during his entire three years as a student.
With the agreement of the media and the support of local people, William was allowed to lead a relatively normal life in St Andrews, going to the shops and hanging out with his friends.
One friend in particular.
Kate Middleton started university at the same time as Prince William, and the two became close friends.
Royal author Katie Nicholl recounts how the relationship started.
Kate would go running in the morning and then turn up in the canteen, and make sure William had caught her eye. By the end of the first term they were breakfasting together. By the end of the first year, they had something of a very close friendship. And by their second year they'd moved in together.
They started as flatmates, William presumably keen to impress Kate with cooking skills he'd picked up at Eton.
Then it turned into romance, the couple leading an idyllic existence far from the prying lenses of the media.
They would tuck themselves away with curries from the corner shop and watch DVDs together, says Nicholl. And for the best part of a year, their relationship was known only to their closest friends.
And once the secret was out, they were still safe in St Andrews, protected by the pact between royal officials and the media that left them free from press intrusion.
They may look back on their graduation, 23 June 2005, as their last day of freedom, because once that day was over, and their university life was past, the deal was over - and the media were keen to get back into the game.
For well over a year the couple managed to evade the worst attentions of the press, but it all boiled over at the beginning of 2007 when scores of photographers gathered outside Kate's flat in London to mark her 25th birthday.
She was surrounded as she walked stone-faced down the street towards her car.
William was furious.
Given the role of the papararazzi in the events that led to his mother's death, he was determined to protect Kate from the most extreme pressures that go with being a royal girlfriend.
The couple kept a low profile, and royal lawyers came down hard on photographers who got too close.
At one point the couple were said to have split up, but by the time William was awarded his wings as a military pilot in the air force, Kate was back in the picture.
The perils of living life in the public eye had already become clear to Kate before their reported break-up.
Her family had been invited to watch his passing-out parade from Sandhurst, the elite college for army officers.
There was speculation this meant that the family had been 'accepted' by the Queen and that Kate herself had been deemed suitable to marry into the Royal Family.
Then came a setback.
The venue for the wedding was not announced on Tuesday.
