Egypt Heritage : Giza Pyramid Complex, Papyrus & Egypt Perfume ( On Christmas Tour 2018)
The Pyramids of Giza
The Giza Pyramid was built 4,500 years ago during the Fourth Dynasty, the golden age of Egypt. The construction of the pyramid took about 85 years and was built by three generations of Pharaoh: Khufu, his son Khafre, and his grandson, Menkaure. Their graves are flanked by three smaller Queen Pyramids.
Papyrus (scientific name: Cyperus papyrus) is a type of water plant known as material for making paper in ancient times. This plant is commonly found on the banks and valleys of the Nile River. About 3500 BC, the Ancient Egyptians used papyrus.
The Ancient Egyptians loved beautiful fragrances. They associated them with the gods and recognised their positive effect on health and well being.
Egypt was the world leader in the creation of perfume and was closely associated with the international perfume trade. When Julius Caesar took control of Egypt, he demonstrated this fact to the Roman people by throwing bottles of precious perfume to the crowd during his triumphant return to Rome.
Moody the Perfumer, Cairo, Egypt
Tourists in Cairo are taken to different showrooms along with all the cultural sights to educate and, hopefully, lighten your pockets. I never mind this and do look on it as a fun and educational experience.
The Golden Eagle Crystal Showroom was one of these stops. They have their own flower farms and also export flowers to Europe. ex-Marine (husband, Steve) and I sat down and prepared to begin serious sniffing and testing. A few of the blends are considered aphrodisiacs according to Moody, our demonstrator. Watch and learn...
Savoury Scents (Cairo, Egypt)
I shot this impromptu whilst traveling in Egypt (never mind the shaky hand-held camera!).
‘Cleopatra Palace Perfumes’ is a store in Giza, Cairo. They specialise in oriental perfumes, flower blends of old, ambar cigarettes, ambar paste, incense & kohl.
The shop owner welcomed us warmly with a customary offer between pepper mint tea, coffee & hibiscus flower juice. He then went on to explain in detail the history and utility of each perfume, essence and blend stating that original base essences can maintain their scent for over 7000 years!

EGYPT 267 - PERFUMES - *In Ancient Egypt & Today * (by Egyptahotep)
The Ancient Egyptians loved beautiful fragrances. They associated them with the gods and considered positive effects on health and well being. Perfumes were generally applied as oil-based salves, and there are numerous recipes and depictions of the preparation of perfume in temples all over Egypt.(Remember that The kyphi was a mixture on basis of incense, and its aroma was sacred.)
The god Nefertem,(Lotus Flower Headed) was the god of perfume and healing who was said to have eased the suffering of the aging sun god Re with a bouquet of sacred lotus. He could be described as the world's first aromatherapist!
Egypt was the world leader in the creation of perfume and was closely associated with the international perfume trade.
The most highly prized perfumes of the ancient world came from Egypt. Of these, arguably the most popular were Susinum (a perfume based on lily, myrrh, cinnamon), Cyprinum (based upon henna, cardamom, cinnamon, myrrh and southernwood) and Mendesian (myrrh and cassia with assorted gums and resins).
They also loved Stakte, a perfume with a fairly stronge aroma of myrrh, Rhondinium (based on the highly popular scent of rose) and a scent simply known as *theEgyptian*which seems to have been based on cinnamon and myrrh with sweet wine. Perfumes were generally stored in beautiful alabaster bottles, but there is also some evidence that blue glass bottles may also have been used.
TODAY the Egyptian perfumes are also of excellent quality, Its essences have a high degree of purity, (and not alcohol added) Moreover there is an extensive catalog where the buyer can choose in many traditional perfumeries, is also an excellent souvenir for tourists, besides these perfumes come in little beautiful bottles of colored glass hand-blown made by artisans with masterly thecnique.

Egypt: Khan el-Khalili Market, Cairo (January 7, 2020)
Located in the Islamic district of Cairo, Khan El Khalili bazaar was originally built to serve as a mausoleum for the Fatimid royal family, and was at that time a part of the Great Eastern Fatimid Palace which was built in 970 CE.
By the 14th century when the first Mamluk sultan ruled the country, Egypt had been ravaged by the Black Death. Nonetheless, it continued to act as a major trade center, and as a result, several commercial properties were constructed. By 1389 the original Fatimid cemetery had been destroyed in order to make way for a large caravanserai.
The original caravanserai can still be seen at Khan El Khalili to this day although most shoppers have little interest in the colorful history of this charismatic bazaar. Instead, most locals are only interested in securing the best possible deals, in a place where haggling is the order of the day.
Most Egyptian package tours include a tour of Khan El-Khalili bazaar and if not our flexible packages can be tailored to include a guided tour of the bazaar. However, our many years of experience have shown us that many tourists prefer to explore the market by themselves during their stay in Cairo. For this reason, most of our Egypt tour packages include at least a few days in Cairo.
The original bazaar built by El Khalili was demolished and then rebuilt in 1511. The trading hub was built complete with massive gates and several perpendicular streets, in much the same was as many other Ottoman era market places. While the Khan El Khalili market was originally built for the sale of luxury goods, vendors selling other wares soon began making an appearance.
The market is famous for clothing, spices, traditional jewelry and perfumes. The items are of high quality which is part of the reason that this market has survived for so long.
The Khan El Khalili bazaar is far from being a tourist trap even though there are plenty of souvenirs available. However, many of the high quality clothes; fabrics and other items that are made by local artisans often prove to be the best souvenirs since they are a part of Egyptian culture, and as such, they are bought daily by the countless locals shopping at the bazaar.
The Khan El Khalili bazaar is a great place to while away an entire day. The sights and sounds are enduring examples of true Egyptian culture that has been thriving for hundreds of years.
For a break from the heat, there are plenty of coffee shops along the street. Egyptians like their coffee strong, so be prepared for quite a jolt from their favored drink, but also prepare for some of the most exotic tasting coffee you’ll ever have. If you do favor a cup or two of quality Arabic coffee, be sure to visit Fishawi’s Coffee Shop. This coffee shop has been open since 1773, making it the oldest coffee shop in all of Egypt.
