WELCOME | THE ETCHES COLLECTION
The Etches Collection, Museum of Jurassic Marine Life based in Kimmeridge, Dorset extends you a warm welcome!
Etches Collection, An Exceptionally Beautiful Museum on Jurassic Coast, Dorset, UK
Jurassic Coast, Fossil collection, palaeontology, Dorset, U.K. Steve’s mood is upbeat, but he has known too much disappointment to count chickens yet. There’s a glint of steel; just as he would never sell his collection, he won’t ‘sell out’, either. He’s no pushover; he wants things the way he wants them, and that’s that. “What’s the point otherwise?” he says. He also has very definite ideas about museums, and how the material should be presented. He no more wants ‘dumbing down’ than screeds of minute, learned text. Nor does he want people goggling ignorantly at things they don’t understand, too afraid to question, or unable to find someone to ask. He wants all guided, ideally in-person, tours – pre-recorded, failing that - so that people actually do learn about what they are seeing.

The Etches Collection - A Documentary
For the past 7 weeks I have been helping to film an incredible story in a beautiful part of the UK.
Steve Etches spent most of his working life as a plumber although he had a passion for fossil hunting from an early age.
He was told by experts that there were no fossils to be found in Kimmeridge* clay and pretty much advised to stop looking.
*Kimmeridge in Dorset is where Steve lives and works but Kimmeridge clay is present throughout the UK and as far up as Russia.
Steve now has a museum dedicated to his work which is in Kimmeridge, Dorset and houses over 2,000 examples of his amazing findings.
He has received an MBE for his work as well as an honorary doctorate from Southampton University and continues to hunt for new species to this day.
Please check out his website or even better, visit the collection in Kimmeridge where you can meet the man himself.
After spending so long with Steve, the collection and time in Kimmeridge itself, I must encourage you to visit the museum, village and beach one day.
The documentary will have special guests Ian Gillan (Deep Purple) and Bill Oddie who are both interested in this field. It should be out later this year and will be well worth the wait!

PLENTY MORE FISH IN THE SEA | STEVE ETCHES
See Steve Etches talking about his recent find of a beautiful Pachythrissops specimin.
Come and see it for yourself at THE ETCHES COLLECTION, Kimmeridge, Dorset
Kimmeridge Bay, beautiful scenery, fossils in the cliffs (fine weather)
A virtually free day out, apart from transport and a £5.00 toll road and parking fee (combined). Kimmeridge Bay is famous for its fossils, literally dropping out of the soft shale rocks in the cliff. The clay rock ledges that stretch out into the sea are great for crabbing, and the scenery is beautiful. The only sounds are the wind, the waves and the other people who have ventured out this far! What else is there to see? Clavell's Tower, Built in 1830 and now for hire as a holiday let. The nodding donkey oil pump, installed in 1961 and still working, is the oldest oil pump in the country. The village is pretty, but the Etches Collection fossil museum is a bit pricey at £8.00 adults, £4.00 children, though family tickets are available. Apparently at times the waves in the bay can provide amazing surfing conditions. The Fine Foundation Wild Seas Centre is on the East end of the bay, and is open Apr - Oct every day, including bank holidays, 10.30am until 5pm with free entry. There is only one place to eat in Kimmeridge, Clavell's Restaurant, but it's only open 10 - 5, so if you plan to spend the day, bring plenty of food and drinks for yourself.

Hidden mysteries lie in wait inside Kenya's fossil treasury | AFP
The Nairobi National museum is home to one of the world's largest collections of fossils, unrivalled in eastern Africa. Recently, the bone structure of a previously unknown prehistoric carnivore was rediscovered in the museum's storage, just one example of a long-forgotten discovery in this disorganised treasure trove of a museum.

Dean Lomax on Doncaster's 'forgotten fossil', BBC Breakfast
Palaeontologist Dean Lomax discovers that a fossil in a Doncaster museum thought to be a plaster copy is actually genuine. The 189-million-year-old ichthyosaur remains are of an extinct marine reptile.
Further study confirmed it to be a previously unknown species.
