FRANK CAPRA'S LOST COLD WAR MOVIE THE FALLBROOK STORY 88844
Rarely seen by the public, The Fallbrook Story (1952) is a short subject film that told the story of a water rights battle between the citizens of the Fallbrook, California area and the federal government. It was produced (without credit) by Frank Capra, and uses many of the techniques he utilized in his famous series of WWII-era propaganda films including the Why We Fight series.
The government wanted to have exclusive rights to the water from the Santa Margarita river for the use of adjacent Camp Pendleton, the U.S. Marine Corps base, in conflict with the established use by local ranchers. At the time film director Frank Capra served on the Board of the local water agency, the Fallbrook Public Utilities District (FPUD). He produced this short film (without on screen credit) to tell the story from the ranchers perspective, leading to front page publicity from the Los Angeles Times. As a result, the federal government subsequently withdrew their claim on exclusive use of the water. The film was introduced on camera by Cecil B. DeMille.
The background on this film dates to 1952, when Frank Capra and other owners of large ranches in the Fallbrook community banded together to build a dam and thus gain control of area water rights. Capra and a number of other big landowners served on FPUD, Fallbrook's utility and water commission. This board had the responsibility of overseeing the dam project, which included condemning the land of several smaller landowners in the community. When the small landowners complained, the federal government brought suit against FPUD to stop the dam. Capra felt compelled to shoot this film on the subject, The Fallbrook Story, in which he asked, Are non-elective usurpers of power in Washington to prevail over the American people? Is Liberty to die? Is freedom to become but a memory? Ironically, the name of the small landowners' opposition group, the Willow Glen Water Users Protective Association, failed to remind Capra of the Willet Creek dam project opposed by Jefferson Smith in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Eventually FPUD was investigated by a Grand Jury, and although the commission was cleared of any deliberate, illegal wrongdoing, the Jury chastised FPUD for its lack of regard for small landowners in the community. Capra, however, had by that time resigned from the commission and made his escape back to Hollywood.

Visiting the memorial at the McStay Family crime scene in Victorville, CA
The McStay family was found murdered in the desert near Victorville, California, on November 13, 2013. The family disappeared from their home in Fallbrook, California, on February 4, 2010. The McStays' disappearance was widely reported on national news stations and on America's Most Wanted, Disappeared, Nancy Grace, and Unsolved Mysteries.
The circumstances surrounding the family's disappearance and the lack of clues about their whereabouts triggered speculation by amateur sleuths online. After their disappearance, it was speculated that the McStays left voluntarily, since investigators found searches on the family's computers for What documents do children need for traveling to Mexico? and Spanish language lessons. Because their car was found so close to the Mexican border, police reviewed surveillance footage of the pedestrian gate into Mexico. Video recorded the evening of February 8, released on March 5, showed a family of four resembling the McStays crossing the border into Mexico. On February 19, 2010, California police notified Interpol to be on the lookout for the family. In April 2013, the San Diego Sheriff's Department announced that it believed that the McStays traveled to Mexico voluntarily.
Unconfirmed sightings of the family were reported in Mexico and elsewhere, perpetuating hopes that they were safe and had left voluntarily. Relatives of the McStays doubted that they would travel to Mexico, saying that Joseph and Summer avoided the country because of the safety threat posed by recent drug wars. Other critics of the theory noted that the McStays had more than $100,000 in bank accounts, with no withdrawal of funds in preparation for a trip, and their accounts were untouched after their disappearance. Summer's sister said Summer's passport was expired. Although it is possible for a U.S. citizen to enter Mexico without a passport, one is required to reenter the United States.
Summer had been known by a number of names. Born Virginia Lisa Aranda, she had also been known as Summer Martelli, Summer Aranda-Martelli, Lisa Aranda, Lisa Martelli and Lisa Aranda-Martelli. In an early video interview, her mother confirmed that Martelli was the surname of Summer's stepfather, but it was once alleged to have been invented by Summer. In a February 25, 2010 Valley News article, Sheriff's Lieutenant Dennis Brugos confirmed that Summer McStay had used various names including her stepfather's last name of Martelli, although she was never adopted by him. She took ten years off her age, although there was no confirmation that she used the alternative birthdate on any legal document. Family members insisted that the name change was only a facet of Summer's mental illness.
Many people were quick to blame Summer's ex-boyfriend, Vick W. Johansen, who had just got released from prison shortly before they vanished. San Diego law enforcement also investigated webmaster Dan Kavanaugh, who was writing himself unusually large checks from Joeseph's business account within days after the disappearance and over a week before they were reported missing. Despite the nefarious activities, it is reported Kavanaugh was in Hawaii at the time of the disappearance. Investigators and the public also focused on McStay's business partner, Charles Chase Merritt, born circa 1957, who was the last known person to have had contact with Joseph McStay, and the first to notice his disappearance. According to state records, Merritt had felony convictions for burglary and receiving stolen property. His most recent felony conviction, in 2001, was for the theft of $32,000 worth of welding and drilling equipment from San Gabriel Valley Ornamental Iron Works in Monrovia, California.
In 2013, Merritt acknowledged he had spent more than an hour with Joseph McStay the day the McStay family went missing. Merritt, who reportedly was the last person McStay called from his cell phone, also said that he had passed a polygraph exam and did not know anything that could help solve the mystery of the family's disappearance. When asked if he thought Merritt was a suspect, Joseph McStay's father Patrick said, I have to have faith in Chase because I have to have faith in my son. I believe that [Joseph] trusted Chase and believed in Chase. Do I think Chase is involved? I don't think so, and I truly hope not.
On November 5, 2014, detectives from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department arrested Chase Merritt in connection with the deaths of the McStay family after discovering that his DNA had been recovered from the McStays' car. His arrest was announced on November 7, 2014. Merritt is charged with four counts of murder, and the district attorney is seeking the death penalty. In July 2015, Merritt's defense attorney filed a request to have the case dismissed because of the wording used by the prosecution when the charges were filed. The trial began on January 7, 2019 in San Bernardino, California.

Car Camera - Lincoln, NE - Fallbrook to Bair Ind. Park . 2013 ( ネブラスカ州リンカーン市 )
Today we skirt the north edge of Lincoln, Nebraska, U.S.A. once again... this time beginning from a slow-to-develop lage-scale development named Fallbrook, passing along new suburban development and finally ending at the more established Bair Industrial Park. It seems like roundabouts are everywhere along this route... that's a good thing!
Anyways - Fallbrook, we miss most of the upper-scale housing here... instead we pass through the small town center (still in the making) and then run along the outside edge of Fallbrook itself. Chose this route because it's the prettiest :) . Soon we head straight east, going in-between meadows and even cattle!
Then onto N. 14th Street - now this is how streets should be in Lincoln! 4 (actually 5) lanes, free from traffic clog, smooth... nice! One of those Show me the money moments which is somewhat lacking in road funds right now :( (oh well). East onto Superior, driving past established housing that's been around for 15 years, then through the busy N. 27th & Superior intersection with it's sad sagging traffic signal arms (glad the new signals don't do this - their mast arms are twice as thick in some situations!).
Saline wetlands next, industrial tracts and finally the Bair Industrial Park on the north side of Superior once we do a U. Looking at the sky on a day like today, it makes a person happy to be alive! It's an almost summerish-looking sky - goofy year this year. We went straight from a late winter to nearly summer without any spring in-between. Go figure :p ~
Please enjoy the ride!
