What lies ahead for the next Florida State athletic director? | WCTV
8-20-18
By: Ryan Kelly | WCTV Eyewitness Sports
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- Stan Wilcox was much more than just an athletic director for Florida State. He helped fundraise, and had a vision for the programs and the facilities at FSU.
That is just one of the many things that his successor will be tasked with continuing for the future.
But, in the immediate future, Florida State's next AD will be the last for head baseball coach Mike Martin, who announced he will retire at the end of the 2019 season.
The next AD will be tasked with finding a new Seminole skipper in four decades; a task far easier said than done.
The winningest coach in FSU history has showed no indications of wanting to retire, but the prospect of such a day will be one that must be planned for.
The long rumored standalone football operations facility appears to be closer than ever, and a strong negotiator is going to be needed to work with Willie Taggart's football program and Seminole Boosters, who hold the power of the purse to build a facility that keeps the 'Noles competitive.
And, while plans are reportedly already in place, FSU's new AD will have to make them a reality.
Speaking of realities, the ACC network is set to join the ESPN family of networks in 2019. With the College of Communication and Seminole Productions ahead of the curve for the school's obligations for the upstart channel, Florida State will continue to be looked at as a leader in one of the ACC's most important endeavors.
An eye for the future is imperative in today's changing collegiate-athletics landscape. FSU had been rumored to be looking to add more sports to their 19 current offerings. A new AD will play a large part if any Seminole dreams of lacrosse, men's soccer or another sport becoming a reality.
Florida State's current programs will also need to continue growing to sustain the success of the athletic department.
Don Veller Seminole Golf Course's renovations are just beginning and the Tucker Center's renovations have been a high priority. Upgrades to Dick Howser Stadium, as well as softball and Olympic facilities, will all need proper planning and financing to get from blueprints to building and beyond.
