Photography heritage created by Edward Steichen for MOMA in New York
Family Of Man
Steichen's exhibition the Family of Man is displayed in Clervaux., Luxembourg. The curator gave an interview to News352
Clervaux, Luxembourg
We tried our best to leave Clervaux but, of course, I was looking around and missed a turn. We heard an awful crunching sound from the rear wheel and tried to figure out what it was, thus the looking down at the bike on the bridge in town. How sublime are the road surfaces in Luxembourg?

Clervaux (Luxembourg)

If it's unique, we have it
The Family of Man was a photography exhibition curated by Edward Steichen first shown in 1955 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
According to Steichen, the exhibition represented the 'culmination of his career'. The 508 photos by 273 photographers in 68 countries were selected from almost 2 million pictures submitted by famous and unknown photographers. These photos offer a striking snapshot of the human experience which lingers on birth, love, and joy, but also touches war, privation, illness and death. His intention was to prove visually the universality of human experience and photography's role in its documentation.
The exhibit was turned into a book of the same name, containing an introduction by Carl Sandburg who was Steichen's brother-in-law. The book was reproduced in a variety of formats (most popularly a pocket-sized volume) in the 1950s, and reprinted in large format for its 40th anniversary. It has sold more than 4 million copies

Inside the Family of Man (MoMA Book)
Today we explore Family of Man, a book crafted around MoMA's (The Museum of Modern Art of New York) famous 1955 exhibit.
This ambitious exhibition - and now beautiful book - brought together hundreds of images by photographers working around the world, was a forthright declaration of global solidarity in the decade following World War II. Organized by noted photographer and director of MoMA’s Department of Photography Edward Steichen, the exhibition took the form of a photo essay celebrating the universal aspects of the human experience. The exhibition toured the world for eight years, attracting an estimated 10 million visitors.
