What does a scientist look like? | Ines Pineda-Torra | TEDxUCLWomen
Molecular Scientist, Dr Ines Pineda-Torra, asked school children this simple question and shares with us the reoccurring answers. She emphasises the importance of challenging harmful stereotypes and demonstrates how this can be done.
Dr Ines Pineda-Torra is a Senior Lecturer in the Division of Medicine at UCL. Her passion for science and research took her from her native Spain to The Netherlands (Utrecht University), France (Pasteur Institute in Lille), the US (New York University) and now the UK. Not bad for someone who was told by she would “never be able to do any proper scientific research” when she was in school. She works on how a specific group of receptors controls fat metabolism, aiming to develop more efficient drugs to combat cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. When she’s not busy doing research-related activities, she leads the Athena SWAN team in the Division of Medicine to advance and promote women’s careers in science. She is also part of the UCL’s “Inspiring Women in Science speakers” and talks to schools in the London area to encourage girls with a passion for science to follow their dreams, and pursue a career in science. She has also started a similar program in Madrid.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

THE UGLY DUCKLING STORY:
It is a beautiful summer day. The sun shines warmly on an old house near a river. Behind the house a mother duck is sitting on ten eggs. Tchick. One by one all the eggs break open.
All except one. This one is the biggest egg of all.
Mother duck sits and sits on the big egg. At last it breaks open, Tchick, tchick!
Out jumps the last baby duck. It looks big and strong. It is grey and ugly.
The next day mother duck takes all her little ducks to the river. She jumps into it. All her baby ducks jump in. The big ugly duckling jumps in too.
They all swim and play together. The ugly duckling swims better than all the other ducklings.
- Quack, quack! Come with me to the farm yard! - says mother duck to her baby ducks and they all follow her there.
The farm yard is very noisy. The poor duckling is so unhappy there. The hens peck him, the rooster flies at him, the ducks bite him, the farmer kicks him.
At last one day he runs away. He comes to a river. He sees many beautiful big birds swimming there. Their feathers are so white, their necks so long, their wings so pretty. The little duckling looks and looks at them. He wants to be with them. He wants to stay and watch them. He knows they are swans. Oh, how he wants to be beautiful like them.
Now it is winter. Everything is white with snow. The river is covered with ice. The ugly duckling is very cold and unhappy.
Spring comes once again. The sun shines warmly. Everything is fresh and green.
One morning the ugly duckling sees the beautiful swans again. He knows them. He wants so much to swim with them in the river. But he is afraid of them. He wants to die. So he runs into the river. He looks into the water. There in the water he sees a beautiful swan. It is he! He is no more an ugly duckling. He is a beautiful white swan.

The English longbow is laden with myth; of its origins, its power, its achievements. The centuries that have passed since it was used in earnest, means that the knowledge of what the bow was actually capable of doing, has also passed. The captains and commanders that once knew its’ true power in physical and in military terms, are long dead. The knowledge is lost and it is time to rediscover what it can and cannot do.
Find out more about the battle, the armour and the arrows in these companion films.

For opening my mind to all of this and fantastic general information
Pottage & Boiled Bacon | Inspiration: Medieval Peasant Meal
Thank you for watching my very first attempt at a YouTube video! I was inspired to make this meal after reading The Time Traveler's Guide to Medieval England by Ian Mortimer, and it is to that book that I will direct anyone who is interested in further exploring the everyday lives of the peasants (villeins, freedmen) and all the commoners of the medieval period.
Pottage, maislin (a rye blended bread) and boiled bacon were a staple food for the poorer members of the medieval society.
I derived my recipe from the following website, making modifications based off of other ingredients that would also be available to the villein:
Note about the boiled bacon: I decided to cook it separately, but you can choose to cook it with the pottage. American bacon comes from the belly of the pig while British bacon is cut from the loin back of the pig (similar to Canadian bacon) with the addition of a strip of fat. Use whatever is more readily available to you.
Note about Pottage: I used a quick cooking steel cut oat (Coach's Oats), which cooks in around 4 minutes, and the pottage was ready at around 15 minutes. However, if you're using instant oats or normal steel cut oats, you will need to shorten or lengthen the time based on directions of the package.
Pottage recipe (Adjusted during the course of making the video):
4 cups or 32 oz. stock (beef, chicken, vegetable, create your own!)
Parsley
1 Leek
1/2 Head of cabbage
1/2 Yellow Onion
1 Cup Peas (canned or frozen)
1/4 - 1/2 tsp. Coriander (adjust to taste)
1 tsp. - 2 tsp. salt or to taste
1 tsp. sage
2 parsnips
2/3 cup of oats (Adjust cook time depending on using instant or steel cut oats. See note above)
Combine all ingredients except for the oats and salt, and bring to a boil on medium high heat. Add steel cut oats (not instant) when the stock begins to boil. Turn heat down to low and simmer for at least 15 minutes (up to 30 or however long it takes for the oats to cook). Add salt to taste.
