ABOUT CHAMPAGNE CHARLIE:
George Leybourne -- Born in 1842 Gateshead England, was a Victorian Music Hall Superstar of the 1860's & 70's. His early appearances were in Liverpool & Newcastle under the stage name of Joe Saunders. Later on, he performed using his real name of George Leybourne in some of London's smaller East-End venues to include Wilton's Hall.
In 1866 the song 'Champagne Charlie' & character became an immediate hit. A salary of £25 a week rose to £120 a week. Manager Mr W.Holland gave Leybourne a carriage drawn by 4 white horses & told him that he must only drink champagne in public while promoting Moët & Chandon.
Dressed in immaculate evening fashion of the time, he would enter in top hat, bow tie & tails, gloves, cane & scarf while waving a bottle of vintage Moët & Chandon, declaring his love for the high life. Women fancied him & men admired his cavalier attitude to life. His style evolved a new type, which was a 'swell' attractive & fashionable.
George career spanned 23 years & sang over 200 songs, In later years he failed to adapt to changing times & his popularity declined.

A victim of success & fast living, George Leybourne died penniless at the age of 42 in Islington London & is buried in London's Abney Park Cemetery.

Lynemouth Power Station is a coal and biomass fired power station which provides electricity for the UK National Grid. Until March 2012, it was the main source of electricity for the nearby Alcan Lynemouth Aluminium Smelter. It is located on the coast of Northumberland, north east of the town of Ashington in north east England. The station has stood as a landmark on the Northumberland coast since it opened in 1972, and has been privately owned by aluminium company Rio Tinto Alcan throughout its operation until December 2013, when RWE npower took over. In January 2016 it has been acquired by Energetický a průmyslový holding.
The station is one of the most recently built coal-fired power stations in the United Kingdom, but with a generating capacity of only 420 megawatts (MW), is now one of the smallest operating. Two separate wind farm plans currently have permission to be built near the station, one for a 13 turbine wind farm near the smelter and another three turbine wind farm to the north of the station. In 2009, Alcan announced that they hope to fit the station with carbon capture and storage technology. In 2011, it was announced that the power station may be converted to burn biomass only, in a bid to avoid government legislation. In January 2016 the station was purchased by Energetický a průmyslový holding (EPH).

Class 20 Power Thrash Action at Carlisle.

20090 and 20132 have the honor of being in charge of the Settle and Carlisle Express on the 8th August 1992. They are first seen departing Preston at 0915 amidst a summer shower and are then seen coming off the stabling point adjacent to the station before departing south with the addition of 47801 due to it being a cold day.

Clementine Performed By Tom McConville And Robbie Sherratt

Robbie Sherratt is a up and coming young fiddle player from Staffordshire. A rising star and protege of renowned fiddle player Tom McConville.

Tom was born on Tyneside and brought up in a pub on the famous Scotswood Road with clientele drawn from the Irish and Scottish communities. This is where he first experienced traditional singing and fiddle music; the Hornpipes of James Hill amongst his first influences. 50 years on Tom McConville is widely acknowledged as THE authority on the music of James Hill and produced the first CD devoted entirely to Hill’s compositions.
Tom’s musical journey started in the North East folk clubs in the early 70s. Newcastle’s thriving Irish scene provided the opportunity, with his first band, to support Sean McGuire, John Doonan, The Fureys, Boys of the Lough and even a lock-in with The Dubliners. Tom still credits the legendary Sean McGuire, the fiddle genius from Belfast, for teaching him his bowing techniques.
Turning professional in 1974 he joined Bob Fox in a duo then folk/rock band Magna Carta to play all over Europe. A memorable partnership with Kieron Halpin produced two award winning albums and top billing at The Cambridge Folk Festival.
His next group Dab Hand made several visits to the USA where Tom met with another of his hero fiddlers, Byron Berline. After a spell with Syncopace and a partnership with guitarist Chris Newman, Tom spent the next 11 years recording & touring with Northumbrian piper Pauline Cato.
Every new venture brought great success and immense respect from his peers and public alike. Throughout his many collaborations he has continued his solo show at venues large and small. “A sandpaper-dry wit, eye-watering skill on the fiddle, great vocals... you just can't help feeling that a performance by Tom is like visiting an old friend” is how one folk club organiser describes him.
2006 saw Tom working with Scots instrumentalist of the year, Aaron Jones & All-Ireland Champion flute, fiddle and whistle ace Claire Mann. Along with Kieran Boyle, Peter Tickell, Dave Wood & Kevin McGuire, Tom completed a stunning solo C.D. Tommy on the Bridge. Musically brilliant,it attracted great critical acclaim. Two more solo albums followed: Tommy on Song and Tommy on the Road. Tours with these albums played a major part in Tom being voted Musician of the Year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
Recently Tom has travelled extensively as a duo with David Newey and with three & four piece line ups featuring David, Shona Kipling, Phil Murray and Andy Watt.
Renowned for his musical accompaniments, Tom has played on hundreds of albums. The list includes: Barbara Dickson, Richard Thompson, Allan Taylor and Lindisfarne. Whilst he has shared stages throughout the world with Stephan Grappelli, Sean McGuire, Mark O'Connor, Paul Brady and The Chieftains, Tom has never forgotten his roots and is as happy in the intimate atmosphere of a small folk club as he is at the largest festivals. Tom McConville is a world class act!

Making the most of the sunny spring weather on Easter Sunday... Champion Hornpipe with accompanying steps... FYI the tune, the fiddle, the dance board and the property all date from the 1800s...

For those interested, the tune is The Champion Hornpipe by James Hill who was a fiddle player/composer active on Tyneside, England, between the 1830s and 1850s. The champion who the tune was written for could well have been a successful rower/oarsman as that was the main spectator sport during the 19th century ~ some say that it may have even been Harry Clasper from Dunston near Gateshead who won numerous races and became known as Champion of the Tyne, and of the World! Successful rowers became folk heroes and were celebrated in local songs as well.

I got the melody from fiddle giant Tom McConville and the music is found in a great collection of James Hill's music called The Lads Like Beer compiled by Graham Dixon. As for Courtney, she is a retired champion Irish dancer and is now a certified Irish dance teacher (TCRG) with her own school....@Scoil Rince Luimni (
