American Artifacts Preview: James K. Polk Ancestral Home
The James K. Polk Ancestral Home in Columbia, Tennessee is the only surviving home except the White House in which the 11th president lived. Before serving as president, James K. Polk served as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, and as governor of Tennessee. He was president from 1845 to 1849, and died of cholera just three months after leaving the presidency.
John Holtzapple, director of the Polk Home, led this tour.
The Polk Home was one of the stops on a 10-day bus tour from Asheville, North Carolina to Austin, Texas led by historian and author Richard Norton Smith.
This American Artifacts program will first air in its entirety at 8am, 7pm and 10pm on Sunday, December 18, 2011 on C-SPAN's American History TV.

Seminole Wars
The Seminole Wars, also known as the Florida Wars, were three conflicts in Florida between the Seminole—the collective name given to the amalgamation of various groups of native Americans and African Americans who settled in Florida in the early 18th century—and the United States Army. The First Seminole War was from 1816 to 1819, the Second Seminole War from 1835 to 1842 and the Third Seminole War from 1855 to 1858. They were the largest conflicts in the United States between the War of 1812 and the American Civil War. Taken together, the Seminole Wars were the longest and most expensive Indian Wars in United States history and one of the most expensive of all wars ever fought by the U.S. as a percentage of gross national product.
The First Seminole War arose out of tensions relating to General Andrew Jackson's excursions into northern Spanish Florida against the Seminoles beginning in 1816. The governments of Britain and Spain both expressed outrage over the invasion but ultimately, the Spanish Crown agreed to cede Florida to the United States in the Adams–Onís Treaty of 1819. According to the Treaty of Moultrie Creek of 1823, the Seminoles were required to leave northern Florida and were confined to a large reservation in the center of the Florida peninsula.

hang down your head and cry
hang down your head, tom dooley
poor boy, you're bound to die
this time tomorrow
i reckon where i'll be

hang down your head, tom dooley...

counting up their dimes
counting up the girls they've known

but i've got news, baby!

Touring James Buchanan's home and birthplace
Since the founding of our country, Pennsylvania has played a crucial role in the development of the United States of America. Many of our Founding Fathers spent much of their public careers in the state, and there are destinations throughout Pennsylvania with strong ties to a variety of presidents. However, did you know that Pennsylvania was the birthplace of only one U.S. President?
That's right. Of the 43 men to be President of the United States only one, James Buchanan, was born in Pennsylvania. (Interestingly, only two vice presidents were born in Pa.: Dallas Mifflin--under James Polk--and current Vice President Joe Biden).

Presidential Dollar Coin: 2008 Andrew Jackson
A citizen of Tennessee, Andrew Jackson was the first president elected from west of the Appalachian Mountains. As a boy, he fought in the Revolutionary War. Jackson gained national prominence as a hero of the War of 1812, and was nicknamed “Old Hickory” for his firm discipline as commander of his troops.
As president, Jackson worked to strengthen the executive branch and vetoed more bills than the six prior presidents combined. His renomination to a second term marked the first use of a national nominating convention to select a party’s candidate instead of a congressional caucus.
A strong proponent of federal supremacy over states’ rights, he took a forceful stance against the state of South Carolina’s attempt to nullify a federal tariff, declaring “Our federal Union: it must be preserved.”
President Jackson authorized three southern branches of the United States Mint in 1835 – New Orleans, Charlotte, and Dahlonega.
Coinage Legislation under President Andrew Jackson
Act of June 25, 1834 — This Act regulates the legal-tender value of certain foreign silver coins.
Act of June 28, 1834 — This Act regulates the legal-tender value of certain foreign gold coins.
Act of June 28, 1834 — This Act sets the standard weight of U.S. gold coins, sets the standard for payment for gold or silver deposited for coinage, sets the rate at which gold coins shall be receivable, and directs the setting apart of gold coins for assay.
Act of March 3, 1835 — This Act establishes a branch of the United States Mint for the coinage of silver and gold at New Orleans, Louisiana, and branches for the coinage of gold at Charlotte, North Carolina and Dahlonega, Georgia.
Act of January 18, 1837 — This Act:
sets forth the duties and increases the salaries of the officers of the United States Mint, with the Director earning $3,500 per year including travel expenses;
sets forth the composition and weight of gold and silver coins;
mandates that each coin struck at the United States Mint shall have on one side an impression emblematic of liberty with an inscription of the word “Liberty” and the year of the coinage; and that the reverse of gold and silver coins shall have the representation of an eagle with the inscription “United States of America.” The figure of the eagle shall be omitted from the reverse of the dime, half dime, cent, and half cent;
makes provisions for gold and silver bullion that is brought to the Mint for coinage.
