North Shields Fish Quay - October 2017
A nice crisp October morning along North Shields Fish Quay.
St Mary's Lighthouse to North Shields Fish Quay, North Tyneside ©
Linear 5.5 mile walk from St Mary's Lighthouse in Whitley Bay northwards along the coast through Cullercoats and past Tynemouth Castle & Priory to the mouth of the River Tyne where the route follows the river inland for a mile or so to North Shields and the active fish quay. I tried to stick to the beach where possible but sometimes rocky promonteries take the walker up onto the road. Some parts of the route are quite smart and active but the coast is no longer the busy resort that it used to be 50 years ago and parts of the beach promenade, paddling pool and swimming pool have been left to rot away.
Since 2012 St Mary's lighthouse has been grade II listed. While it no longer functions as a working lighthouse, it is easily accessible (when the tide is out) and regularly open to visitors; in addition to the lighthouse itself there is a small museum, a visitor's centre, and a cafe Wikipedia
Tynemouth Castle is located on a rocky headland (known as Pen Bal Crag), overlooking Tynemouth Pier. The moated castle-towers, gatehouse and keep are combined with the ruins of the Benedictine priory where early kings of Northumbria were buried. The coat of arms of the town of Tynemouth still includes three crowns commemorating the tradition that the Priory had been the burial place for three kings Wikipedia.
There are quite a few sets of steps involved if you want to walk along the beach although it would be possible to walk along the promenade road on a bike or mobility scooter and there are plenty of places to eat and drink along this route. There is a short write up of this walk at

There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focusing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers. Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine!
Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!

Give us a break. This is about jobs, it's about people and livelihoods. There's evidence that the fish are returning to the grounds. Let us, with careful management, take advantage of that. No one is looking to go back to the days of taking everything that swims. But with careful management, let's have what is due to us.

STORYLINE
British fishermen are pleading with EU ministers to give them a break ahead of annual talks on quotas.
The ministers will meet in Brussels next week to discuss further cuts in European fishing levels, saying this is essential to safeguard stocks for the future.
But fishermen in the UK say their industry has already been devastated by quotas - and it's time to draw a line in the sand.
In the northeastern port of North Shields, just outside Newcastle, the fishing fleet heads home through the gathering darkness.
The crews unload their catch - cod, whiting and prawns - taken from the fertile fishing grounds of the North Sea.
Watching over them from the dockside are red-jacketed fishery protection officers, charged with ensuring that the boats comply strictly with quota regulations.
Steven Moss is skipper of the Green Pastures, one of the thirty boats based in North Shields.
Moss has spent the entire day at sea. Now he's back in port - tired, angry and frustrated.
His nets have caught more fish than he's allowed to bring in. So he's had to throw the surplus - fresh fish ready to sell - straight back overboard.
It's immoral and it's unfair, he argues. Good, exceptionally marketable fish is getting dumped back in the sea, dead.
It's unreal, the amount of codlings and whitings being dumped around this coast this past six months because of the lack of quota.
Less than a rope's length from the quayside, auctioneers prepare to sell what the fleet has brought home.
Wholesale prices are stable. An average day's catch for a single boat may be worth around one thousand pounds (two thousand US dollars).
Some boats don't make a profit at all.

SHIELS documentary Gary Alikivi 12mins (2014)
'Shiels' is a documentary about the shared history, tradition and connection between North and South Shields. The riverside of the two towns were almost mirror images of each other, with industry below and houses above, connected by steep winding stairs. People have been crossing the River Tyne by boat as long as there have been communities either side of the water, and over the years ferries have operated from landings at different points on the river.
The film also looks at the possibilities of closer co-operation between North and South Shields, similar to Newcastle - Gateshead.
