The imperial city of Hue in central Vietnam was the home of the Nguyen Emperors and the nation’s capital from 1802 to 1945. When it comes to history and cultural heritage, palaces, tombs and temples, Hue has it all. Sitting astride the Perfume River, Hue is a picturesque and peaceful city which pervades a sense of harmony.
The northern shore of the river is dominated by the ancient Citadel, with its giant flag tower, mossy green walls and moat. Most of the city’s key historic sites lie in and around the Citadel including temples, various formal state palaces, the Imperial Enclosure and the Forbidden Purple City within it. Hue came under heavy attack during the American War and many of the imperial building were tragically destroyed or badly damaged. This was followed by a period of wilful neglect under the new Communist regime, until the 1990’s when the site became UNESCO World Heritage Listed and restoration began. Whilst only a few original buildings are intact the city still holds much appeal.

Hue, Vietnam
HUE is a beautiful city in Vietnam on the perfume river.
The Imperial Palace was badly damaged during the American/Vietnam war. Which is a great pity, it must have been a stunning place in its hey day.
The Thien Mu Pagoda is the tallest Pagoda in Vietnam.
To watch the sunset on the Perfume river, while on a cruse is as good as it gets.

VIETNAM: ANNIVERSARY OF DANANG'S LIBERATION
Natural Sound
There have been scenes of celebration in Danang, as Vietnamese commemorate the communist liberation of the city.
Wednesday is the 25th anniversary of Danang's liberation by Vietcong forces, near the end of the Vietnam war.
Hundreds of flag-festooned boats lined up for a race to kick off the celebrations.
Danang was a flurry of festive activity on Wednesday as celebrations began to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the liberation of the city.
Red and yellow flags and coloured banners have been planted along every street corner and parades have filled the streets with music and dance.
Some 10 to 15-thousand people turned out for the celebration, which was held in a public square beneath an obelisk-like war memorial.
Colonel Nguyen Ngoc Phi, now 75, led the forces that took over the city 25 years ago and on Wednesday he hoisted a communist flag over the government building shortly before noon.
On March 29, 1975, Danang became the third city to fall as North Vietnamese forces advanced down the country's coastline in an offensive that ended on April 30 with the capture of the South Vietnamese capital.
The victory reunited the country and ended a painful conflict that killed 58-thousand Americans and three (m) million Vietnamese.
The Vietnamese government, in an effort to boost patriotism as its leadership faces a crisis in confidence, has been holding celebrations in each of the cities taken during the spring of 1975 to mark their victory.
During the war, Danang served as a major base for U-S troops, with nearby China Beach a favourite rest and relaxation spot.
These days, boosted by its shipping port and manufacturing industry, the city has doubled in population to 700-thousand becoming one of Vietnam's four largest cities.
