Gala is a top dance music artist; she’s renowned for her minimal look and recognizable voice. Bearing the name of the muse of Salvador Dali and Paul Eluard, Gala left Italy when she was only 17 to attend a school of arts in Boston and moved to New York in 1993, where she portrayed music and underground art community.
Gala sold over 6 million records all over the world. Her debut album Come Into My Life (dated 1997) includes multiplatinum singles: ”Freed from Desire” (#2 in UK and present for 8 weeks in a row in UK Top10 charts), Let A Boy Cry (#3 in Hot 100 european charts) and Come Into My Life (#1 in Italy, Spain and Brasil).
In 1996 Gala was elected Best Female Performer of the Year by Italian magazine Musica e Dischi. In July 1997 she has been awarded with the Italian Dance Award as best pop/dance artist of the year and was elected Best Foreign Artist of the year at Midem in Cannes, France. Gala has been awarded with golden and platinum records in France and Benelux and with a golden record in the UK. In the same year she gained a nomination as Best Dance Act at Mobo Awards in the UK together with Prodigy, Chemical Brothers e Orbital. Between 1995 and 1998 Gala attended several TV shows such as BBC’s Top Of The Pop in the UK, Taratata, Les Année Tubes and Hit Machine on Canal M6 in France, MTV Germany and performed live in famous arenas such as Bercy stadium in Paris and Las Ventanas in Madrid.
In 2014 Frida Gold project presented the song Liebe ist meine rebellion, German remake of Freed from desire, and went gold in Germany!
In 2016 Sean Kennedy, supporter of Wigan Athletic FC, decided to “customize” Freed From Desire and dedicate it to the amazing performances of Will Grigg in League One. It quickly became a real anthem, first for Wigan’s supporters and then for those of Northern Ireland, who never miss the chance to cheer for their idol.
To celebrate her first 20 years, Gala is back with a new acoustic version, fully played and sung again and included in the soundtrack of the recent movie by Laurent Tirard titled Un homme à la hauteur, with Oscar-winning actor Jean Dujardin (The Artist).
Festival2Funky@Sumo
In its second year, Festival2Funky 2014 was a fantastic celebration of Black and urban music, on Saturday 18 October. Taking place across five venues on Leicester’s Braunstone Gate, and in the West End, this festival encompassed Reggae, Soul, Drum ‘n’ Bass, Dub Step, Funk, R&B, acoustic and Jazz. It included a variety of exhilarating live performances, alongside masterclasses, DJ sets and after-parties. Events were hosted by The Music Café, Sumo, Mobius, Sugar Loaf and The Font, as part of Black History Season.
Highlights included:
-Leicester’s first 3 vs. 3 B-boy Battle, at The Music Café. This attracted over 20 crews from cities across the UK including London, Leeds, Birmingham and Manchester. The performers battled for over 4 hours until the winning crew – Huddersfield’s Heavy Smokers - took the title. Second place went to Battle Cats. The event included a judge’s showcase, with performances from Mouse, Uncle Flo and Banner, some of the UK’s finest B Boys. There were also plenty of opportunities for freestylers throughout the day.
-The Drum n’ Bass stage at The Music Café, which gave local artists a unique opportunity to perform alongside Grooverider, DJ SS and Jaydan. Earlier in the evening hip-hop was hosted by UKs finest Klashnekoff & Dj Jon1st
-Sugarloaf’s masterclasses, which hosted DJing with Jon 1st, Vocals with Terri Walker and an MCing with Klashnekoff. Full to capacity, the venue saw evening performances from artists such as Natasha Watts, Omar, Zahra Palmer O'Jay, Frisco, Paul Lewiss, Derek Inman, Marcus Tahoun Snuske, Vikki Jessop and Richie Harris, among many others.
-For Sumo, our headliner on the basement stage was soulful singer Jamie Joseph, following sterling performances by Them&us which included Killa Kella and a Basement Jaxx vocalist. The night also featured first class DJs such as DJ Tony Minvielle.
Thanks to all the artists, audiences and venues that made this festival so fantastic!

Flood on Leicester Road... this was 12 hours after I had been through it when it covered my wheel the night before...
James Maddison left frustrated by Leicester's failure to see off Chelsea
James Maddison believes Leicester City should have beaten Chelsea in their Premier League clash on Sunday afternoon. On his homecoming at Stamford Bridge, Frank Lampard’s men got off to the perfect start, taking the lead through Mason Mount after just seven minutes. But they failed to press home their advantage against a sub-par Foxes during a first half in which they dominated. Brendan Rodgers’ side were much improved after the break, and duly notched a deserved equaliser when Wilfred Ndidi - whose error had gifted Mount the opener - powered home Maddison’s right-wing corner. Leicester then took the game to their hosts, and created a plethora of chances to claim all three points. Maddison himself missed the best of the opportunities, firing over the bar from eight yards. Jamie Vardy also missed a golden opportunity, and England Under-21 star Maddison reckoned they should have been leaving west London with a deserved victory. You see the lads on their knees there because ultimately, we're coming away disappointed,” he told Sky Sports. We had chances, myself included, and if you come to Stamford Bridge and you play like that, you have to score the chances you create. I'm sure we'll watch that game back and be disappointed we don't come away with three (points).” Ex-Norwich midfielder Maddison took the game by the scruff of the neck in the second period and asserted himself on proceedings. But he was full of praise for Ndidi, praising the fortitude of the Nigerian international The reaction of this man was brilliant,” Maddison added. When you make a mistake like that in the second minute or whatever it was, to show the character that he showed to come back and control the game, which he did in that pivot role, and to make amends with a bullet header, he deserves a lot of praise. “He probably doesn't get the praise he deserves, Wilfred, because he does the part of the game which no one else wants to do. “And I thought he was fantastic after that, so he fully deserves all the credit he's going to get.
