Travel video about destination Biertan in Romania.
Amid the enchanting wine region of Transylvania is the small village of Biertan formerly known as, Birthaelm, one of the region's oldest settlements. An impressive fortified church rises majestically above the dreamy village, a reminder that Biertan was once of great religious and political importance. The village is still influenced by its old world charm and its fortified church is an atmospheric gem of a bygone age. The militaristic design of the church was a necessary precaution as in former times the region was far from peaceful and idyllic. Both the Tartars and Turks repeatedly invaded Transylvania and thus made it necessary for the village to have a fortified church that could fend off would be attackers.Biertan's church organ is still regarded as a masterpiece and the sound of its one thousand two hundred and ninety pipes is a truly unforgettable and breathtaking experience. As with the larger part of its historical and cultural treasures the fascinating rural character of this intriguing village has been preserved right up to the present day.

Romania HiLItes: Fortified Church of Biertan (Transylvania)
The place called BIERTAN is one of the first rural settlements of Transylvania. The first documentary attestation was recorded in 1283. For nearly 300 years (1572-1867) it was here that the Lutheran Protestant Episcopate of Transylvania had its headquarters. THE SAXONS as we know them today started populating Transylvania in the Twelfth to the Fourteenth Centuries, coming from the cast and west of the Rhine. They were given rights in Transylvania and were free to practice the crafts they knew. The first Saxons who came to Biertan were peasants, but they all mastered crafts before coming to Transylvania.
THE CIHURCII was built on the site of a Catholic basilica between 1490-1524. It remained catholic until the Reformation, after which it became a Protestant church. It is an extensive gothic building, having also renaissance and baroque elements (the pulpit, the northern gate, the door of the vestry). This church is one of the biggest rural churches in Transylvania. Since 1993, it has been on the patrimony list of UNESCO.

Until 19th century, religious communion was more important in Biertan than administrative or legal marriage. Lutheranism, the religion of the Transylvanian Saxons, governed the most aspects of village life, dictating, for instance, that girls could be married from the age of 14. Priests had the right to officiate religious ceremonies but only bishops could grant divorce, and only under certain circumstances such as adultery.
Tucked away in the church grounds of Biertan, there is a small room known as the ‘marital prison’. If a couple was locked inside for six weeks, it was very hard for them to have enough food the
following year, so the reason to remain together was to work together and to survive. During the three centuries that bishops resided at Biertan, just one couple ended up divorcing.
The locking system of the sacristy door at Biertan was presented at the World Fair of Paris in 1889. The system simultaneously activates 15 locks when the door is closed.

Fortified Church, Biertan, Romania
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this 14th-century Gothic basilica is one of the largest fortified churches in the region.
Biertan has one of the biggest fortress churches and once housed the Lutheran Bishop of Transylvania. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The church was first mentioned in 1402 as a Gothic basilica, but it was completely demolished and the hall-shaped church with a chief nave and two side aisles that we see today was built 1500–25. The late Gothic and Renaissance stone masonry is well preserved with doorways, the pulpit, and brackets.
The wooden furniture, including the folding triptych, dates back to the beginning of the 16th century.
egends say that feuding couples were held in this tower with one single bed, one table, one chair, one plate and one glass. The man and wife were held for a period of time here and the legend claims that because of this reconciliation tactic, there was only one divorce in 300 years.

Saxon Fortified Church at Biertan
The church at Biertan is possibly the best-known of all the Saxon fortified churches of Transylvania. Birthalm, as it is known in German, was constructed in the early 16th century and was the seat of the Lutheran bishops in Siebenburgen from 1572 until 1867. These photos were taken by me on our second Romanian trip in September, 2007.
