3KS Episode 37 Catholic Republic: Why America Will Perish Without Rome
Three Kraters Symposium Episode 37 Catholic Republic: Why America Will Perish Without Rome
Three Kraters Symposium is a gathering of academics, activists, authors, lawyers, professionals, and more that drink, smoke, and discuss topics ranging from history to politics to education to trending news. The goal of the symposium is to encourage a free flow of ideas with leading minds but without the stuffiness. The Greeks had it right. When it came to discussing the important items of the day, they would gather together, pour drinks, and discuss in an open forum.

ITALY: ROME: US SECRETARY OF STATE MADELEINE ALBRIGHT VISIT
English/Nat
U-S Secretary of State Madeleine Albright on Sunday met several Italian leaders in Rome as part of her 11-day tour of Europe and Asia.
Focus of the talks was the planned eastward expansion of NATO.
Albright says she and the Italian government saw eye to eye with respect to the expansion as well as Russia's position towards the alliance.
Madeleine Albright's first stop of her whirlwind world tour to Europe and Asia - Italy's ancient capital Rome.
The new U-S Secretary of State received a warm welcome on her first trip abroad since taking office last month.
Albright's talks with several Italian politicians centered on the planned eastward expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
At a press conference, Albright described her meeting with Italy's Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini largely as positive.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We came to agreement on a whole set of issues, especially as we were talking about NATO enlargement and the U-S/Russian relationship and the NATO/Russian charter. I also was very appreciative of the role that Italy had played as far as the Brcko decision was made and its continued very important role in Bosnia and in the Balkans.
SUPER CAPTION: Madeleine Albright, U-S Secretary of State
However, Albright also said that differences remained over the political treatment of states such as Iraq, Iran and Libya.
Before leaving Washington, Albright had announced that she intended to roll up her sleeves and do real foreign policy business, not just shake hands and say hello.
And while she certainly stuck to her promise, Sunday's agenda still included a fair number of handshakes - including one with Italian Defense Minister Beniamino Andreatta.
When the Secretary arrived at the Palazzo Chigi for a meeting with the Prime Minister, she almost fell as she was getting out of the car- her colleagues will be hoping her foreign policy-making is more footsure.
Her meeting with Prime Minister Romano Prodi, however, apparently went without a hitch.
Albright also visited Rome's Quirinale Palace for talks with Italian President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro.
She will leave for Germany later Sunday.
Her nine-country trek over 11 days will also take her to Paris, Brussels, London and Moscow as well as several Asian countries.
After a busy day of meetings, the Secretary of State took some time out to walk the streets of the old city.
Smiling, waving and shaking even more hands, Albright was clearly enjoying herself.
Accompanied again by U-S Ambassador Bartholomew, Albright gazed across the ancient ruins of the Forum Romanum.
But she told journalists visiting Rome's tourist attractions was not what her trip was all about.
SOUNDBITE:
What I'm doing on this trip is preparing the road to Madrid. Madrid is where the summit will take place where NATO enlargement will happen. So this trip is part of the road to Madrid.
SUPER CAPTION: Madeleine Albright, U-S Secretary of State
Albright and her Italian colleagues agreed Sunday that the July summit should go ahead regardless of whether the alliance completes a charter with Russia defining a new special relationship.

ITALY/GERMANY: US SECRETARY OF STATE MADELEINE ALBRIGHT VISIT UPDATE
English/Nat
The first woman to become U-S Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, is on her first trip abroad since getting the job.
First stop was Rome, where she took some time out from her busy political agenda to walk up ancient stone stairs to a 16th-century square designed by Michaelangelo.
From Italy, she flew to Bonn, where she was met by German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel.
Madeleine Albright's first stop of her whirlwind world tour to Europe and Asia - Italy's ancient capital Rome.
Albright's talks with several Italian politicians centred mostly on the planned eastward expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
At a press conference, Albright described her meeting with Italy's Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini largely as positive.
SOUNDBITE: (English)

Albright also visited Rome's Quirinale Palace for talks with Italian President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro.
After a busy day of meetings, the Secretary of State took some time out to walk the streets of the old city.
Smiling, waving and shaking hands, Albright was clearly enjoying herself.
Accompanied by the American Ambassador to Italy, the U-S Secretary gazed across the ancient ruins of the Roman Forum - maybe pondering the rise and fall of another world power.
Then, it was off to Germany.
Late Sunday, Albright's plane touched down at Cologne/Bonn airport.
German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel was on hand at the airport to greet his American colleague.
Albright will meet with both German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and Kinkel on Monday.
The German Foreign Minister told reporters that again, the planned eastward expansion of NATO was going to be at the top of the agenda.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We have no problems in our bilateral relations. We will discuss NATO enlargement, I think we will discuss the European issue, we have very important developments in Europe this year, and I think we will discuss Turkey - an issue important for the United States and also for us. She is very welcome in Bonn.
SUPER CAPTION: Klaus Kinkel, German Foreign Minister
After her stay in Bonn, Albright is scheduled to visit Paris, Brussels and London before continuing on to Moscow.
The visit to Russia will probably be the most important stopover for Albright - it's focus will be on a charter that will enable Moscow to express its reservations against an expansion of NATO.
Albright will then travel to South Korea, Japan and China before returning to Washington.
