These prominent medieval town walls of Avila were started in 1090. The city is still walled with large blocks of semicircular towers. It is the largest fully illuminated monument in the world. The Basilica de San Vicente and Cathedral of Avila are beautiful; it's amazing what they could do in the 12th century! Los Cuatro (The Four Posts) are a landmark spot in Avila and it offered us a great spot to get a full view of the complete walled city.

16th-Century Doctrines of Just War & the Origins of the Spanish Empire
Kluge Fellow Andrew Devereux examined the legal and moral questions of empire on the threshold of the early modern era by casting light on Spain's expansionary ventures in the Mediterranean basin in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. His talk focused on Spain's Mediterranean expansion, particularly on Spanish designs on the Holy Land and the ways in which the acquisition of the title to the defunct crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem served as the basis for legal arguments justifying war and conquest in a range of lands inhabited by non-Christian peoples.
Speaker Biography: Andrew Devereux is assistant professor of history at Loyola Marymount University. He is a historian of the medieval and early modern Mediterranean. Devereux earned his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University, where his dissertation examined Spanish imperial ideologies in the context of the Mediterranean world.

Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe (UNESCO/NHK)
The monastery is an outstanding repository of four centuries of Spanish religious architecture. It symbolizes two significant events in world history that occurred in 1492: the Reconquest of the Iberian peninsula by the Catholic Kings and Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Americas. Its famous statue of the Virgin became a powerful symbol of the Christianization of much of the New World.

A new life in Spain? | Andalusia | VPRO Documentary
How is it to leave your country behind because the situation is not safe anymore and how is it to settle down somewhere else? Journalist Stef Biemans and his wife Audrey left their home to find a place where they can stay safe.
A year ago, Stef Biemans and his family still lived in Nicaragua, in a quiet area of the pleasant village of Masaya. But his street turned into a war zone when the country went into a deep crisis and President Daniel Ortega cracked down the protests. Stef searched for a place to stay and ended up with his wife and children in Andalusia. To find his way and get to know this part of Spain better, in this six-part series he writes letters to the inhabitants. Stef discovers Andalusia on the basis of those letters, but parallel to this story you follow his personal situation, which of course is strongly influenced by the crisis in Nicaragua.
Stef, Audrey and their children Camilo and Lucy are newcomers to Andalusia, along with thousands of people who reached Spain by boat from Africa last summer. Here they are trying to build a new future. But can you settle down somewhere else if the situation in your own country escalated? And how do people in Andalusia welcome newcomers? Are they welcome?

Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Someone said they left together
I ran out the door to get her
She was holding hands with Trevor
Not the greatest feeling ever
Said, Pull yourself together
You should try your luck with Heather
Then I heard they slept together
Oh, the less I know the better
The less I know the better
[Chorus 1]
Oh my love, can't you see yourself by my side
No surprise when you're on his shoulder like every night
Oh my love, can't you see that you're on my mind
Don't suppose we could convince your lover to change his mind
So goodbye
[Verse 2]
She said, It's not now or never
Wait ten years, we'll be together
I said, Better late than never
Just don't make me wait forever
Don't make me wait forever
Don't make me wait forever
[Chorus 2]
Oh my love, can't you see yourself by my side?
I don't suppose you could convince your lover to change his mind
[Outro]
I was doing fine without ya
'Til I saw your face, now I can't erase
Giving in to all his bullshit
Is this what you want, is this who you are?
I was doing fine without ya
'Til I saw your eyes turn away from mine
Oh, sweet darling, where he wants you
Said, Come on Superman, say your stupid line
Said, Come on Superman, say your stupid line
Said, Come on Superman, say your stupid line

Valle de los Caídos (Valley of the Fallen)
The Valle de los Caídos (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈbaʎe ðe los kaˈiðos], Valley of the Fallen) is a Catholic basilica and a monumental memorial in the municipality of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, erected at Cuelgamuros Valley in the Sierra de Guadarrama, near Madrid, conceived by Spanish dictator Francisco Franco to honour and bury those who died in the Spanish Civil War.[1][2] Franco claimed[when?] that the monument was meant to be a national act of atonement and reconciliation. The Valley of the Fallen, as a surviving monument of Franco's rule, and its Catholic basilica remain controversial, in part since 10% of the construction workforce consisted of convicts, some of whom were Spanish Republican political prisoners.
The monument, a landmark of 20th-century Spanish architecture, was designed by Pedro Muguruza and Diego Méndez on a scale to equal, according to Franco, the grandeur of the monuments of old, which defy time and memory. Together with the Universidad Laboral de Gijón, it is the most prominent example of the original Spanish Neo-Herrerian style, which was intended to form part of a revival of Juan de Herrera's architecture, exemplified by the royal residence El Escorial. This uniquely Spanish architecture was widely used in public buildings of post-war Spain and is rooted in international classicism as exemplified by Albert Speer or Mussolini's Esposizione Universale Roma.
The monument precinct covers over 3,360 acres (13.6 km2) of Mediterranean woodlands and granite boulders on the Sierra de Guadarrama hills, more than 3,000 feet (910 m) above sea level and includes a basilica, a Benedictine abbey, a guest house, the Valley, and the Juanelos — four cylindrical monoliths dating from the 16th century. The most prominent feature of the monument is the towering 150-metre-high (500 ft) cross erected over a granite outcrop 150 meters over the basilica esplanade and visible from over 20 miles (32 km) away.
Works started in 1940 and took over eighteen years to complete, with the monument being officially inaugurated on April 1, 1959. According to the official ledger, the cost of the construction totalled 1,159 million pesetas, funded through national lottery draws and donations.
The complex is owned and operated by the Patrimonio Nacional, the Spanish governmental heritage agency, and ranked as the third most visited monument of the Patrimonio Nacional in 2009. The Spanish social democrat government closed the complex to visitors at the end of 2009, citing safety reasons connected to restoration on the facade. The decision was controversial, as the closure was attributed by some people to the Historical Memory Law enacted during José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero's premiership,[3] and there were claims that the Benedictine community was being persecuted.[4] The works include the Pietà sculpture prominently featured at the entrance of the crypt, using hammers and heavy machinery.[5][6] In November 2010, citing safety reasons, the Zapatero government closed down the Basilica for Mass.[7] Mass was celebrated in the open for several weeks. Checkpoints were set up, according to socialist government sources, to prevent right-wing political manifestations such as Falange flags, in accordance with the Historical Memory Law. However, Catholic sources claimed that the government was simply trying to interfere with the celebration of the Mass. After Zapatero's electoral defeat and his leaving office on December 21, 2011, normal service at the Basilica resumed.

Singer Joana killed aged 30 during concert live performance
A Spanish pop singer died after being hit by an exploding pyrotechnic during a live performance at a concert.
Joana Sainz Garcia aged 30 was performing with the Super Hollywood Orchestra group at a venue near Madrid when the incident happened.
A stage pyrotechnic device exploded near the singer. It knocked her unconscious at about 02:00 local time (00:00 GMT) on Sunday.
Paramedics took Ms Sainz to hospital. Later, she was confirmed dead.
Around 1,000 spectators were watching the performance, in the town of Las Berlanas, north-west of Madrid.
Footage posted to social media purportedly shows the moment the firework exploded. It caused Ms Sainz to collapse on the ground.
A doctor and a nurse were in the crowd. They attempted to help the singer before paramedics arrived, El Diario Montanes reported.
Ms Sainz, from Santander, was reportedly the main dancer and choreographer for the Super Hollywood Orchestra. It was a 15-member group including singers, musicians and dancers.
Spanish pop singer dies in on-stage pyrotechnic explosion.
The group was hired to close the four-day festival in Las Berlanas.
The promoter for the group, Prones 1SL, told El Norte de Castilla the regrettable incident. It appeared to have been caused by a manufacturing failure.
Isidro Lopez, owner of Prones 1SL, told local media the group used pyrotechnics in previous performances without incident.
In a statement posted to Facebook, Prones 1SL said: The whole Prones family, partners, artists, friends, collaborators are very sad and dismayed by the loss of our companion and friend Joana Sainz.
The local government of Las Berlanas, which organised the festival, paid tribute to Ms Sainz on Facebook. RIP Johan Sainz. You are in our memory, it wrote in a post.
Joana Sainz was a Spanish pop singer and dancer who died on 1 September 2019 while performing with Spain’s Super Hollywood Orchestra when she was hit by a pyrotechnic device and exploded into her stomach leaving her fatally injured.
Sainz was the principal dancer and chief choreographer of Spain’s Super Hollywood Orchestra. On Sunday the group was performing in the small town of Las Berlanas about 80 miles northwest of Madrid when a pyrotechnic fired shards of its metal casing into her stomach.
The group promoter Isidoro López told the local news agency Avila Red that the incidence can’t be explained as they had been doing the same act for five years.
“Nobody can explain it. We have been doing the same [act] for five years.”
He added that the fireworks are like sparklers and supposed to last 15 to 20 seconds to “give a little show.’’ He said that maybe the manufacturer may have accidentally filled one of the sparklers with the wrong material, causing the device’s metal casing to explode.

José Navarrete - Post-Doomsday Demo
Remember that a while back I uploaded a demo called Doomsday Demo? Well, this is the follow-up. This demo only has four songs, but two of them are quite long and despite having two songs less than the other demo, this demo is two minutes longer (yay for all the coincidences with the number two!). This time I decided to record the songs in Spanish, but I can give some insight for you to know what the songs are about.
In risk of causing certain controversy, the picture used during Arrebatador de Vida (the fourth song) is an actual picture of my grandfather two days before passing away. I'll explain later why I put that picture there.
I recorded this demo without any amplifier (mostly because I didn't have one at the time) except for World of Lies, which the instrumental part is from the Doomsday Demo sessions and it was recorded with an Ibanez TB15. I used the Slayer2 VST along Adobe Audition's Guitar Suite for the guitars, some Hard Limiting and the 30-band EQ from Audition for the bass and EZDrummer Drumkit from Hell with a few samples for the drums. The vocals were recorded with a PC mic. The guitars for Darkness were recorded using a Behringer X V-amp instead of Slayer2. All guitars, basses, vocals and the triangle in Darkness performed by me, except the second guitar solo from World of Lies, which was performed by Betty Saeger.
Tracklist:
00:00 El Precio de la Apariencia (The Price of Appearance)
03:29 Oscuridad (Darkness)
12:37 Mundo de Mentiras (World of Lies)
17:38 Arrebatador de Vida (Life Ravager)
I hope you enjoy my work, and if you do, please spread!
Now, about the songs:
· The Price of Appearance: The song lyrics deal with the fact that many people/enterprises overlook the abilities of people because of their appearance, taking into account the fact that you're not wearing the proper outfit or your haircut is not appropiate over the fact that you're proficient at the job you want to perform
· Darkness: Originally titled In the Dark, this song is a desperate cry at a potential lover to rescue the guy on the song from his own misery. Needless to say, a relationship like that wouldn't work, you shouldn't rely on other people to cover your inner struggles, you shouldn't use another person as a escape from reality. Some harmonies were recorded by me playing right-handed!
· World of Lies: This song was the first one I recorded after releasing Doomsday Demo and it's kinda of an outtake from that one, except that the lyrics were written and recorded at the same time the lyrics for the other songs from this demo were written and recorded. This song is the most heartfelt song I've ever sang. It was all done in pretty much one take and it got so much hate and anger in it that I don't believe I could do another version with better singing or an English version. I wrote the lyrics after my girlfriend threw all we had into oblivion and went out with another guy, realizing that everything she said to me, every promise, every loving word, everything was an illusion and a lie and that's exactly what I sing about in this song. Some months after recording this song I came back with her (what a fool I am) and in a moment of brutal honesty she actually told me that she was with me because she felt weak, but because she didn't feel weak anymore, she felt she didn't need me any longer. That was the definite end to me. You can't say that to another person. You just can't.
· Life Ravager: This is a 10 minute sort of progressive kinda thing, lots of odd signatures and mood changes. This song deals with the effects of cancer on a person, weakening that person up to the point of killing him/her. I wrote this song trying to reflect what I could perceive from my grandfather's mind. He died of stomach cancer after a six month struggle. Most of the times I've listened to this song I've cried, it's just too strong for me. The 12-string guitar tracks at the end of this song were recorded minutes before he passed away. I literally finished recording the tracks and my brother-in-law came to my room to tell me to go to his room to say goodbye. It was terrible. Two days before passing away, one of my sisters took a picture of him to send it to my brother who was far away, that's the picture I used for this video.
