The University of Virginia (often abbreviated as UVA, UVa, Virginia, or The University) is a research university in Charlottesville, Virginia, United States. Its initial Board of Visitors included U.S. Presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe. UVA's campus and original course offerings were conceived and designed entirely by Jefferson, and established in 1819. President Monroe was the sitting President of the United States when the university was founded, and previously owned the land and original buildings of Brown College, a residential college at the university.

Celebration and Song at UVA's 2015 Valediction
The University of Virginia's Class of 2015 gathers to recognize outstanding achievement, to reminisce and to celebrate surrounded by family and friends. Actor, comedian and musician Ed Helms also sends them off with inspiring words and a song. He shares the stage with members of the Hullabahoos, a UVA a cappella group. Class President William Laverack gets the last words, highlighting experiences he's shared with classmates during days at UVA.
Class of 2014 Honored at UVA Valediction
Members of the Class of 2014 gather with family members and friends for Valedictory Exercises. Several class and University awards are shared on a beautiful day. Football great Peyton Manning delivers the address, along with a few surprises.

The University of Virginia (U.Va. or UVA) is a public research university in Charlottesville, Virginia. The flagship university of Virginia, it is also a World Heritage site of the United States. It was founded in 1819 by Declaration of Independence author and former President Thomas Jefferson. UVA is known for its historic foundations, student-run honor code, and secret societies.
The original governing Board of Visitors included Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe. Monroe was the sitting President of the United States at the time of its foundation and earlier Presidents Jefferson and Madison were UVA's first two rectors. Jefferson conceived and designed the original courses of study and Academical Village. As the first elected member to the research-driven Association of American Universities in the American South, since 1904, it remains the only AAU member in Virginia. The university is classified as a Research University with Very High Research by the Carnegie Foundation. Its recent research efforts have been recognized by such scientific media as the journal Science, which credited UVA faculty with two of the top ten global breakthroughs of 2015. UVA faculty and alumni have also founded a large number of companies, such as Reddit, that produce more than $1.6 trillion in annual revenue, equivalent to the 10th-largest economy in the world.UVA offers 121 majors across the eight undergraduate and three professional schools. The historic 1,682-acre (2.6 sq mi; 680.7 ha) campus is internationally protected by UNESCO and has been ranked as one of the most beautiful collegiate grounds in the country. UVA additionally maintains 2,913 acres southeast of the city, at Morven Farm. The university also manages the College at Wise in Southwest Virginia, and until 1972 operated George Mason University and the University of Mary Washington in Northern Virginia.
Virginia student athletes compete in 27 collegiate sports and the Cavaliers lead the Atlantic Coast Conference in men's team NCAA championships with 18, additionally placing second in women's national titles with seven. UVA was awarded the men's Capital One Cup in 2015 after fielding the top overall men's athletics program in the nation.
Clarice Smith Distinguished Lecture Series: Sylvia Yount
Sylvia Yount is the Lawrence A. Fleischman Curator in Charge of the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she oversees fine and decorative arts from the colonial period to the early twentieth century. In her curatorial and administrative practice, Yount works to expand and enrich traditional collection and gallery narratives by including Latin and Native American art as well as work by women and artists of color. Her presentation explores the challenges and opportunities of these efforts in the context of shifting definitions of American art and identity, both past and present.

The Clarice Smith Distinguished Lectures in American Art highlight excellence and innovation in American art through evenings with an outstanding artist, critic, and scholar. These talks are a forum for discussing the creative experience and what American art is today.
