Q&A – Can organic apples and peaches be grown in Tennessee?
Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison says you can grow organic fruit in Tennessee, but you need to accept a blemished harvest. Peaches will have worms from plum curculio and brown rot will completely rot the fruit if you don’t eat it quickly. You will probably find more success with apples. Apples have worms too but apple rots are not as fast at rendering the entire fruit inedible. Some organic sprays may be able to slow down the bugs and diseases. Most organic fruits are grown in drier climates where diseases especially rots are not as big of a problem.

The Bugs That Ate Montclair
The emerald ash borer, an invasive species of beetle from Asia, could kill the beautiful ash trees that line the streets of Montclair. The beetle is slowly moving across the United States, killing millions of ash trees in its path. Though the beetles have not been found in Montclair yet, arborist Stephen Schuckman is keeping a close eye on the situation.
The worst case scenario is that during an inspection we find emerald ash borer in our street trees and then Montclair would be ground zero for emerald ash, Schuckman said. If these ash trees die we will be faced with millions of dollars of replacement costs, he said, which would hurt property values.
Fruit and Veg Haul - Wholesale & Farmer's Market
Here's what $74 got me at the wholesale market and the farmer's market. The downtown L.A. wholesale market is great for cheap imported, exotic and California-grown fruit like bananas, mango, watermelon, jackfruit, papaya etc. I got some rambutan (exotic fruit that looks like sea urchins) this week that were really cheap because they were starting to get too ripe. After the wholesale market I swung by my local farmer's market to get some locally grown oranges, greens, avocados and watermelon. Farmer's markets are also a great way to support your local farmer's and the local economy.
