The Band of the Welsh Guards - 1st Battalion Welsh Guards Presentation of Leeks 2019
On St David's Day 2019, The Band of the Welsh Guards, members of No2 Company, 1st Battalion Welsh Guards and the Welsh Guards Association marched through the streets of Brecon in Mid Wales.
The parade stepped off from the Cathedral and marched to the Bulwark, where the regiment were presented with Leeks to mark St Davids Day. From there the parade marched to The Theatr Brycheiniog.
The Band played:
The Welshman
The National Emblem
The Rising of the Lark - The Regimental Quick March of the Welsh Guards
The Rising of the Lark - General Salute
Men of Harlech
Sospan Fach
Deep and Wide - March of No2 Company welsh guards
Sons of the Brave
The band were under the direction of Bandmaster WO2 David Hatton, and were presented leeks by Major David Barringer MBE, their Director of Music, who conducted the band during the service in the Cathedral that happened just before the parade commenced.
The ceremony of the Presentation of Leeks is a traditional ceremony that takes place annually on St David's Day, the 1st March, by The battalions of the Welsh Guards and The Royal Welsh. During the ceremony, every officer, soldier, bandsmen and veteran on parade gets presented with a fabric Leek, the national symbol of Wales, which they wear under their second button, or on the centre of their forage cap. Before the parade, a service normally takes place.

Councillor Anthony Munday and the Leek Gold Fundraising Campaign
Councillor Anthony Munday, Cabinet Member for Greener City, Development and Leisure at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, launches the fundraising campaign for the Leekfrith Iron Age Torcs.
The campaign to save the ancient jewellery - believed to be the earliest example of Iron Age gold ever discovered in Britain - will be led by the Friends of the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery.
The four intricate artefacts that make up the Leekfrith Iron Age Torcs have been valued at £325,000 by a panel of independent experts known as the Treasure Valuation Committee, sparking a three-month countdown to raise the money so that they can be kept on public display.
Fundraisers have until December 5 to meet the valuation price, or risk the artefacts potentially being separated out and sold to private bidders. They are currently on display in Room 2 at the British Museum.

Bayeux Tapestry (1476) 貝葉掛毯 Normandy France
tonykwk@gmail.com
he Bayeux Tapestry is preserved and displayed in Bayeux, in Normandy, France. Nothing is known for certain about the tapestry’s origins. The first written record of the Bayeux Tapestry is in 1476 when it was recorded in the cathedral treasury at Bayeux as a very long and narrow hanging on which are embroidered figures and inscriptions comprising a representation of the conquest of England.
The Bayeux Tapestry was probably commissioned in the 1070s by Bishop Odo of Bayeux, half-brother of William the Conqueror. It is over 70 metres long and although it is called a tapestry it is in fact an embroidery, stitched not woven in woollen yarns on linen. Some historians argue that it was embroidered in Kent, England. The original tapestry is on display at Bayeux in Normandy, France.
It was the idea of Elizabeth Wardle to make the replica Bayeux Tapestry, now on display in Reading Museum. She was a skilled embroiderer and a member of the Leek Embroidery Society in Staffordshire. Her husband, Thomas Wardle was a leading silk industrialist. Elizabeth Wardle researched the Bayeux Tapestry by visiting Bayeux in 1885. The Society also based the replica on hand-coloured photographs of the tapestry held by the South Kensington Museum, now called the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. The aim of the project was to make a full-sized and accurate replica of the Bayeux Tapestry so that England should have a copy of its own.
Thirty-five women members of the Leek Embroidery Society worked under Elizabeth Wardle's direction. This ambitious project was completed in just over a year. As well as members from Leek, women from Derbyshire, Birmingham, Macclesfield and London took part. Each embroiderer stitched her name beneath her completed panel.
The replica Bayeux Tapestry was first exhibited in the Nicholson Institute in Leek in 1886. Over the next ten years the tapestry was put on display in towns and cities across Britain and it even travelled to Germany and America.
In 1895 the replica Bayeux Tapestry was exhibited in the Town Hall at Reading. The Reading exhibition was supported by Alderman Arthur Hill, a former Mayor. Hill offered to buy the replica. This offer was accepted by the Leek Embroidery Society. He then presented the tapestry as a gift to Reading where it was displayed in the Reading Museum and Art Gallery.
In 1993 a new Bayeux Tapestry gallery was opened in the Museum. The tapestry was carefully conserved and remounted as a continuous strip in a specially designed display case. For the first time for many years the entire tapestry could be seen in one gallery.
Now you can visit the Bayeux Tapestry gallery and see for yourself the work of the skilled Victorian women of Leek as well as discovering the story of the Norman Conquest.
Attingham Hall National Trust
Built for the first Lord Berwick in 1785, Attingham Hall and its beautiful parkland were owned by one family for more than 160 years. As their fortunes rose and fell they proved themselves to be spenders, savers and saviours - providing a fascinating story of love and neglect whose mark still stands in Attingham’s rooms today.
Discover the traces of the family story throughout the mansion, from the flashy but flawed Picture Gallery roof that contributed to the bankruptcy of the second Lord Berwick, to the prized paintings of the cattle that the fifth Lord loved.
Attingham’s saviours, the eighth Lord and Lady, began restoration work that lives on in the Attingham Re-Discovered project. This project aims to bring the mansion back to life, and in 2015, visitors can see our conservation work in action in the Picture Gallery, as we conserve and restore the lower levels of this unique space prior to the re-installation of paintings in 2016. Staffordshire Strikes Gold With Iron Age Find
Staffordshire Strikes Gold With Iron Age Find - FEB 28 2017
An archaeological find on Staffordshire farmland is believed to include the earliest examples of Iron Age gold ever discovered in Britain.
The collection, which has been named the Leekfrith Iron Age Torcs, was discovered by two metal detectorists just before Christmas.
Unveiling the torcs today (February 28), experts said the unique find could date back as far as 400BC and was of huge international importance.
Staffordshire County Council Leader, Philip Atkins, said: “As a county and as a council we are both proud and unbelievably lucky to be home to some truly exceptional finds, including of course the Staffordshire Hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold.
“This amazing find of gold torcs in the North of the county is quite simply magical and we look forward to sharing the secrets and story they hold in the years to come.”
The four torcs, made up of three neck torcs and one bracelet, and are thought to be from the continent, possibly Germany or France.
They were found by detectorists Mark Hambleton and Joe Kania in December and handed over to Portable Antiquities Scheme, part of Birmingham Museums, which manages the voluntary recording of finds.
Expert Dr Julia Farley, Curator of British & European Iron Age Collections for the British Museum has assessed the remarkable find.
Julia said: “This unique find is of international importance. It dates to around 400–250 BC, and is probably the earliest Iron Age gold work ever discovered in Britain.
“The torcs were probably worn by wealthy and powerful women, perhaps people from the continent who had married into the local community. Piecing together how these objects came to be carefully buried in a Staffordshire field will give us an invaluable insight into life in Iron Age Britain.”
Archaeologists from Stoke-On-Trent City Council led the site investigations on the farmland in the Staffordshire Moorlands and say it is a “complete” find with no evidence of any other pieces on the land.
Abi Brown, Deputy Leader of Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said: “This city is steeped in arts, history and culture and on the very day we submit our formal expression of interest to become UK City of Culture in 2021 this find will renew pride and wonder in the area.
“Stoke-on-Trent is proud to hold, care for and display the archaeological heritage from the whole county, a role it has held for nearly 40 years.
“We have worked hard with partners to ensure such magnificent finds remain in Staffordshire and we would be thrilled for The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery to become custodians of another such important international discovery.”
An inquest will be held in North Staffordshire at 11am on Feb 28th 2017 and Coroner Ian Smith will rule if the pieces are treasure.

Capers are the small flower buds of the Capparis shrub, which grows in the Mediterranean. As they're picked by hand they're fairly pricey but they're a versatile store cupboard ingredient, and are good for adding a distinctive sour/salty flavour to many savoury dishes. Really small, peppercorn-sized capers, called 'nonpareille' are available, but the slightly larger ones are more common. Capers are preserved a number of ways - either in salt, wine vinegar, brine or olive oil. The brine-pickled type has the sharpest flavour and is slightly less versatile than the salted type. For a more sophisticated caper flavour, try the elegantly stemmed caper berries, which are a little milder and sweeter than the standard type. Combine with white wine vinegar, mustard, honey and lemon juice and mix with grated celeriac to make remoulade; mix with melted butter, lemon juice and zest to make a sauce for grilled salmon; add to pizza toppings; combine with mayonnaise, olive oil, anchovies, tuna and lemon juice for an Italian tonnato sauce to serve with rosé veal.

The Hoxne Hoard is the largest hoard of late Roman silver and gold discovered in Britain, and the largest collection of gold and silver coins of the fourth and fifth century found anywhere within the Roman Empire. Found by Eric Lawes, a metal detectorist in the village of Hoxne in Suffolk, England, on 16 November 1992, the hoard consists of 14,865 Roman gold, silver and bronze coins from the late fourth and early fifth centuries, and approximately 200 items of silver tableware and gold jewellery. The objects are now in the British Museum in London, where the most important pieces and a selection of the rest are on permanent display. In 1993, the Treasure Valuation Committee valued the hoard at £1.75 million (today £3.18 million).
