Part 3 The Story of Saxon Shrewsbury Up to 1066 and All That
Story of Saxon Shrewsbury.
Pt. 3 - Saxon Shrewsbury Up to 1066 and All That!
Scrobbes-byrig (Shrewsbury) flourished as a Saxon town.
It had its own mint in the early 900s, during the reign of King Alfred's son Edward the Elder.
The mint produced coins for the Saxon kings, and, in 2015 the Shropshire Star reported on an auction of one of the coins.
This coin, worth a penny when it was created in Shrewsbury more than 1,000 years ago, was sold for more than £500 in 2015.
The mint had closed by the time of the Norman invasion in 1066.
In 1006 the Kingdom of Pengwern was organised into shires (smaller areas of administration). and Scrobbesbyrigscire (Shropshire), was created.
So, even in 1006, people were still evidently talking about the town of scrubby bushes (Scrobbes-byrig) for many years to come.
...That's quite a tongue-twister! Try saying it out loud. NOW!
AND, it gets worse!
...You got it! They even named the whole COUNTY after those scrubby bushes (alders)!
That happened when Scrobbesbyrigscire, became the County name of what we now call Shropshire.
Moving on to a new subject.
The County Sheriff was a powerful man, and acted on behalf of the king.
He had the authority to collect taxes and raise armies for attacks into Wales.
He was also responsible for enforcing law and order.
Presumably attacking Wales was a perfectly respectable thing, in those days!
Maybe, it was tit for tat?
Also in 1006 King Aethelred the Unready spent the winter in Shrewsbury.
Translation of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles states Unready to mean “poor counsel”, “evil counsel” or “unwise.
By the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066 the town was important enough to be called a city, and Included within its walls four churches and two hundred and fifty-two houses. But, it's was still only the size of one average housing estate!

Huntington Museum_Pinkie & Blue Boy
European Art
The European collection, consisting largely of 18th- and 19th-century British & French paintings, sculptures and decorative arts, is housed in The Huntington Art Gallery, the original Huntington residence. The permanent installation also includes selections from the Arabella D. Huntington Memorial Art Collection, which contains Italian and Northern Renaissance paintings and a spectacular collection of 18th-century French tapestries, porcelain, and furniture. Some of the best known works in the European collection include The Blue Boy by Thomas Gainsborough, Pinkie by Thomas Lawrence, and Madonna and Child by Rogier van der Weyden.
American Art
Complementing the European collections is the Huntington's American art holdings, a collection of paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, and photographs dating from the 17th- to the mid-20th century. The institution did not begin collecting American art until 1979, when it received a gift of 50 paintings from the Virginia Steele Scott Foundation. Consequently, The Virginia Steele Scott Gallery of American Art was established in 1984. In 2009, the Virginia Steele Scott Galleries were expanded, refurbished, and reinstalled. The new showcase, a $1.6-million project designed to give the Huntington's growing American art collection more space and visibility, combines the original, 1984 American gallery with the Lois and Robert F. Erburu Gallery,a modern classical addition designed by Los Angeles architect Frederick Fisher.[4] Highlights among the American art collections include Breakfast in Bed by Mary Cassatt, The Long Leg by Edward Hopper,Small Crushed Campbell's Soup Can (Beef Noodle) by Andy Warhol, and Global Loft (Spread) by Robert Rauschenberg.
Acquisitions
In 1999, the Huntington acquired the collection of materials relating to Arts and Crafts artist and designer William Morris amassed by Sanford and Helen Berger, comprising stained glass, wallpaper, textiles, embroidery, drawings, ceramics, more than 2,000 books, original woodblock prints, and the complete archives of Morris's decorative arts firm Morris & Co. and its predecessor Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co.These materials formed the foundation for the 2002 exhibit William Morris: Creating the Useful and the Beautiful.
In 2005, actor Steve Martin gave $1 million to the Huntington to support exhibitions and acquisitions of American art, with three-quarters of the money to be spent on exhibitions and the rest on purchases of artworks.[6] In 2009, Andy Warhol's painting Small Crushed Campbell's Soup Can (Beef Noodle) (1962) as well as group of the artist's Brillo Boxes were donated by the estate of Robert Shapazian, the founding director of Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills.[7] In 2011, a $1.75-million acquisition fund for post-1945 American art was established by unidentified patrons in honor of the late Shapazian. The first purchase from the fund was Global Loft (Spread) (1979) by Robert Rauschenberg painting.[8]
In 2012, the museum acquired its first major work by an African-American artist when it purchased a 22-foot-long carved redwood panel from 1937 by sculptor Sargent Claude Johnson.
The Huntington Library
For qualified scholars, the Huntington Library is one of the largest and most complete research libraries in the United States in its fields of specialization.
The Library's collection of rare books, manuscripts, prints, photographs, maps, and other materials in the fields of British and American history and literature totals more than six million items. Only a tiny portion of this number is on display at any one time, divided between the Main Exhibition Hall and the smaller West Hall.
Among the items on permanent exhibit are the Ellesmere manuscript of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, a copy of the Gutenberg Bible on vellum, the double-elephant folio edition of Audubon's Birds of America, and an unsurpassed collection of the early editions of Shakespeare's works.
The Library collections range in time period from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. The greatest concentration is in the English Renaissance, about 1500 to 1641; other strengths include medieval manuscripts, incunabula (books printed before 1501), maps, travel literature, British and American history and literature, the American Southwest, and the history of science, medicine and technology.
Every year more than 1,700 scholars come from all over the world to study these rare materials. The results of their work are published in books, journals, and textbooks for colleges and universities.
Scenic car ride from Much Wenlock to Devil's Bridge in Mid Wales
Description Car trip from Much Wenlock to Devil's Bridge in Central Wales. This video will eventually form the first one of three about a day in Wales.
This is the record of a journey made on 20th Aug 2014. I used to make an identical journey quite frequently in the late 1960s to enjoy Welsh holidays, staying at one of the roadside cottages in we see in Cwmystwyth. In those days my starting point was Wolverhampton and I join my old route at 10:40 into this video.
The whole road has hardly changed in 50 years. A bit of road straightening here and a bypass there, but that's all.
The last six minutes of the video take us along the B4574 from Cwmystwyth and on to the final decent into Devil's Bridge. This route has been described by the AA as one of the ten most scenic drives in the world (see
Well, that's quite a claim - it's certainly pretty - it's even more pretty in the sunshine. But you make your own mind up!

Making of What sound should we make (2018) by Ruth Barker
Commissioned by Castlefield Gallery and the University of Salford Art Collection, artist Ruth Barker has developed a constellation of related artworks including loomed works, audio, sculpture, costume, installation, and photography. Barker’s new performance If this is the last thing that I say (2018), premieres at the launch of the exhibition on 8 March 2018 - International Women’s Day at Castlefield Gallery.
Ruth Barker worked with a group of school children from Clarendon Road Primary School, in Eccles, Salford. Her three-channel audio piece, What sound should we make (2018), includes a monologue by the artist herself, alongside recordings made in the University of Salford’s Anechoic Chamber (a room designed to completely absorb the reflections or echoes of sound) during a sonic meditation workshop with the children, led by Barker, and inspired by the pioneer of deep listening, Pauline Oliveros.
The exhibition is part of Manchester’s Wonder Women Festival 2018, and marks the 100th anniversary of The Representation of the People’s Act, a law passed in 1918 that reformed the electoral system in Great Britain.

How to Adjust the Flush Water Level on a dual flush Toilet
#geekstreet #diy #dualflushtoilet
This video shows you how to adjust the flush water level on a dual modern flush toilet. This is for toilets without the traditional ball and valve system which are on the older models. The water level on these modem toilets are general set quite low and in turn don't give a particularly good flushing action which in turn could cause blockages.
This particular toilet was purchased from the Bathstore and the model is Soho, its given me constant issues where it gets blocked and after a few searches on the web I found a forum where many people had the same complaint as me regarding this toilet. I thought I'd give this toilet one final try before we bin it. Fingers crossed it works!

Cheshire1, England Oct2011 *piberg*
Cheshire is also known archaically as the County of Chester. It is a ceremonial county in North West England. The Romans occupied Cheshire for almost 400 years, from 70 AD, and created the town and fort of Deva Victrix, now Chester. Many surviving buildings from the 15th to 17th centuries are those black and white timbered buildings.
