New Zealand Sheep Farm Experience in AKAROA (Christchurch)l Cruise Vlog l Ep. 12
I LOVE sheep (for some reason) so a bucket list excursion of mine was to visit a sheep farm while in New Zealand. So, off I went to visit sheep in Akaroa! I booked this tour through Norwegian Cruise Line though most cruise lines offer this tour. It is called: TRADITIONAL AKAROA FARM EXPERIENCE and here is the description from NCL's website:
“Experience life on a traditional New Zealand sheep farm, where six generations of the Johns family have their 900-acre property. A short ride brings you Paua Bay Farm, nestled among extensive gardens. The charming farmhouse is the centerpiece of this expansive working farm. As many as 4,500 sheep, cattle and deer roam the rural acreage.
You'll be greeted by Murray Johns, who will share stories of the family's history and about farming in New Zealand. Then, the eager sheep dogs take center stage and demonstrate their talents for herding sheep, while following their master's commands. If you'd like, you can participate in separating the sheep, before moving to the woolshed, where Murray will elaborate on the life of a sheep shearer.
In addition to watching farming activities, you'll also have time to stroll the garden of native plants and relax over tea and homemade scones.”

NEW ZEALAND: AKAROA :DILEMMA FOR FRENCH SETTLEMENT VILLAGE
English/Nat
As France and New Zealand bicker over proposed nuclear testing in the South Pacific, a tiny community in New Zealand's island is caught in a dilemma.
Akaroa is the only French settlement in New Zealand, but Paris' decision to resume nuclear testing has divided its 700 inhabitants over their French heritage.
Bank's Peninsula on New Zealand's South Island is an area steeped in French tradition, dating back to the arrival of settlers from France in the first half of the 19th century.
The harbour settlement of Akaroa's old colonial buildings and narrow winding streets, many of them with French names, makes it one of the South Island's most popular tourist attractions.
But President Jacques Chirac's decision to resume nuclear testing in the South Pacific has turned New Zealanders against all things French, even in this French enclave.
The first victim of anti-French sentiments is likely to be the French Festival held each October in Akaroa.
The local arts council has already withdrawn its support from the festival and many shops and businesses are also threatening to pull out.
SOUNDBITE:
My chefs...we're supposed to have a champagne breakfast here...and my staff are totally opposed to it...I'm afraid I've got to listen to what they say...and if they're not happy about doing it...well then we won't be proceeding with our contribution to the French festival.
SUPER CAPTION: Mark Smith - Hotel owner
Anti-French feeling has been shown at the spot where the first settlers arrived.
One night, the tricolor flag was ripped down and the flagpole damaged.
Local baker David Beattie says he's waiting for things to calm down before he restores them.
SOUNDBITE:
We'll put it up in the near future but obviously we're concerned about no additional damage may be done and the anti-French feeling at the moment due to the planned tests.
SUPER CAPTION: David Beattie - Akaroa baker
The village museum contributes to preserving Akaroa's proud French past which records the arrival of the first immigrants, and more recently, a visit by former French Prime Minister Michel Rocard, back in 1991.
The scenes around Akaroa would have supplied infinite inspiration for the great French painters.
Vineyards are found throughout Banks Peninsula's valleys and business is booming.
One of the local entrepreneurs is Lloyd Edwards.
He manages the French farm restaurant and is also organising this year's French festival.
Edwards is determined the festival will go ahead as usual.
SOUNDBITE:
If I was to sum it up, there would probably be 95 percent of people in the area who are very nervous about the resumption of French nuclear testing, but by the same token are very parochial in the sense that they feel the tradition here is a tradition that is unique and not owned by the French government. So from that point of view what we are trying to emphasise is the fact that it's a nuclear free French festival.
SUPER CAPTION: Lloyd Edward - Akaroa French Festival organiser
The wife of a former French ambassador to New Zealand criticised the French president's lack of tact in announcing it would resume the nuclear tests.
SOUNDBITE:
You see, I think Chirac has to go to China to learn diplomacy because the Chinese do not announce it - they just go and do it. They shouldn't do it, but I found that most stupid. Months ahead he has created all that uproar in New Zealand and in Australia.
SUPER CAPTION: Mrs Sunley-Henry, Akaroa resident
Anti-French feelings caused by the resumption of nuclear testing in the South Pacific mean that the only French visitors these days are members of the international press.

-- About this video –
After an epic week of doing many wildlife and water activities in Akaroa (just see our Akaroa playlist - ) we are taking the time to explore Akaroa town itself, which is dubbed the French capital of New Zealand.
Our exploration of Akaroa brings us to the Giant’s House in Akaroa – a garden full of mosaic sculptures and water features. It’s the most colourful New Zealand garden you’ll ever see!
After the Akaroa Giants House we venture to the Akaroa Lighthouse. It’s a lighthouse that unusually sits in the middle of the harbour rather than at the end of it.
So what do you think of the New Zealand town of Akaroa? Would you add Akaroa to your New Zealand itinerary? LUK in the comments!

THIS IS IT! Our final New Zealand episode, for now... Come for the mountains, stay for the lakes and dolphins. The scenery is breathtaking. It's legendary! If you only watch one of our New Zealand episodes, it should probably be this one! (BUT you really should watch *all* of them!)
Mount Cook
Come hike the Hooker Valley and Sealy Tarns tracks with us. The incredible views are not to be missed! The snowcapped mountains are majestic, standing tall and mighty. The snow means it's some of the coldest nights we'll have in Blue Steel. See how bundled up we are, and what it's like to sleep in a van. #vanlife. Mount Cook aka Aoraki, Mount Cook is New Zealand's highest mountain, and just one of 19 peaks over 3000m tall. Mount Cook National Park is a rugged land of ice and rock; did you know that 40% of the park is covered by glaciers?!
Lake Pukaki
Everyone loves blue waters, right?! Take a look at the one of the bluest lakes in all of New Zealand - Lake Pukaki. The glacial feed to the lakes gives them a distinctive blue color, created by glacial flour, the extremely finely ground rock particles from the glaciers.
Lake Tekapo
Lake Tekapo was one of the hardest places to leave because of it's beauty. It also signified the end of our NZ adventures in Blue Steel. Watch the sunset with us at the top of Mount John, where the University of Canterbury's observatory is located. See one of NZ's most photographed churches: Church of the Good Shepard, which features an altar window that frames views of the lake and mountains. We also go ICE SKATING for the first time in a decade. Will adventureViV be able to stay upright on the ice? Watch to find out!
***After our final New Zealand adventures, the CameraMan goes on a rant to update you everything that’s happened in our final weeks in New Zealand as we try to sell our beloved minivan, Blue Steel.***
Christchurch
WWOOFing in Christchurch was one of the most amazing experiences we could have ever hoped for. We had an incredible host who made us feel like we were home. Thank you for inviting us into your home and life ❤ Our favorite place to visit in Christchurch was the Botanical Gardens! We’re surrounded by autumn colors as we stroll through the (FREE) garden. Hang out with us in the suburbs of Christchurch: Sumner, Lyttleton, and New Brighton. You’ll definitely enjoy the stunning views
Akaroa
Akaroa is a historic French and British settlement nestled in the heart of an ancient volcano. We decided to spend our final two weeks in New Zealand WWOOFing in Akaroa. To our delight, WWOOFing in Akaroa turned out to be more like housesitting! We absolutely LOVED it! We took care of the cats, chickens, and occasional B&B guest while spending two weeks in Akaroa. The best part of our stay: swimming with the dolphins! Thanks to Black Cat Cruises for an incredible experience - and for taking us out on such a fortuitous day where we’d see albatross, blue penguins and a male orca!!
Blue Steel
The #vanlife has been an unforgettable journey. We’ve explored the northernmost areas down to the southernmost areas of the North and South Islands in loyal and reliable Blue Steel. However, as our New Zealand travels were coming to an end, it was time to find new owners for Blue Steel. Do we succeed? Or will we have to drive Blue Steel off a cliff for some EPIC drone footage (and the insurance claim, of course)?! Find out in this episode!
Shoutouts
Thanks to our maple-syrup covered, hockey-loving, tuque-wearing, Canadian-BFF SETH G for allllll of the birthday love (especially the ice-cream sandwich)! The CameraMan couldn’t be more thankful to have you as a friend!
Thanks to my brother Stefan for all of the birthday love, also! What a nice surprise - you shouldn’t have done that!
If you want a shoutout, all you have to do is buy the CameraMan a cheap beer –
For all of you GADGET GEEKS
Interested in getting a drone but hesitant to drop $$$$$ and crash it? We recommend getting a CHEAP drone first ( so you can practice with it, crash it, and get a good feel for flying before investing in a pricier drone!
Next up - catch us in INDONESIA! We’re back to chasing summer, and we couldn’t be more excited to have our friends meet us in BALI. It’s going to be amazing. Shoutout to Daphne who's bringing us some goodies! Check them out here:
- we're not kidding about this one.
- we lost our last one while quad biking :(
- ever seen one of these before?
- WE SHOULD HAVE HAD ONE OF THESE FROM THE BEGINNING. DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE WE DID. GET ONE OF THESE AND MAKE YOUR TRAVELS WAYYYYY EASIER!
- we swear by this.
