GA Liquor Culture Change?
By Jerry Askin Years ago, it was rare to see a question about alcohol on the ballots, but now it's pretty common. This election voters in several surrounding Georgia counties will decide if Sunday sales and liquor by the drink will pass in their communities.Perhaps a culture change or even a sign of the economy, but more and more cities are looking at liquor for revenue. But, many people say it's time for change.Early voting in is strong in Catoosa County. Alcohol sales could be the reason why.Voters are choosing whether to allow sales of beer and wine on Sundays, and liquor by the drink on Sunday. It can be a controversial question in the Southern Bible Belt-- but, many agree it would bring more revenue into the county. They can use it for several reasons. They can put it back into their education, put it back into the city --- we're still rebuilding from the tornado, says Catoosa county resident Charity Hendricks.Al Hirani owns a convenience store in Ringgold. He also says it's time for change in Catoosa County. The state is losing money, of course the county is losing money --- so it'll be helpful if they go ahead and pass that law, says Hirani. He says passing the law will even make it safer for residents who drive to Tennessee every Sunday to buy their booze. If they're half drunk, they won't have to drive further down, and get themselves in trouble. They can just buy it in Georgia, and go back where they live, says Hirani.Since 1996, Fort Oglethorpe is the only city in Catoosa County who's had a liquor by the drink referendum. In 2002, voters approved beer, wine, and liquor in restaurants, but selling on Sunday -- not so fast. The same citizens voted drinking down in Fort O in 2011, and that may not have changed.I don't support the sale of alcohol anyway, any fashion, anytime, says Catoosa county resident Newell McCormick.I think we should keep the Sabbath holy, says resident Peggy Timmerman.Since 2000, only a few cities in our viewing area have actually passed liquor by the drink sales. Other cities voting on alcohol sales in two weeks include Pikeville, Etowah, and Graysville.

Tennessee Lawmakers Convene for 2015 Session
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee lawmakers have convened the 109th General Assembly amid abortion rights protests inside the state Capitol.
Republican Rep. Beth Harwell of Nashville and Sen. Ron Ramsey of Blountville were re-elected as speakers of the House and Senate, while about 60 protesters outside shouted into a bullhorn, banged drums and chanted.
The protesters waved signs and listened to speeches outside the legislative office complex, lawmakers who oppose abortion rights held a press conference inside the building to announce their plans to enact similar laws struck down by a 2000 state Supreme Court decision.
In last November's election, voters ratified a ballot measure that overturned the court ruling that abortion was protected by the Tennessee Constitution as part of a woman's fundamental right to privacy.
That ruling had struck down the enforcement of state laws on mandatory counseling, a waiting period and clinic regulations.
Lawmakers went about their business undisturbed, though the chants could be heard inside the chambers each time the sergeants-at-arms opened the doors.
The Legislature's organizational session culminates in Gov. Bill Haslam's inauguration to a second term on Saturday.
Then lawmakers go on a two-week break.
State Representative Gerald McCormick (R-Hamilton County) has introduced four new bills this session.
The bills are:
HB0001 Taxes, Sales - As introduced, reduces the state sales and use tax rate on tangible personal property from seven percent to 6.75 percent.
HB0008 Railroads - As introduced, creates a Class A misdemeanor, subject only to fine, for any person permitting a train to obstruct certain public roads for longer than 10 minutes
