The Giant Hulks Powell River
The Hulks: Powell River Concrete Ships
Powell River's floating breakwater of ships have been part of the waterfront since 1930. Needed to protect the paper mill's log storage pond, ten ships built of wood, steel and reinforced concrete have been brought to Powell River for use in this breakwater. They are chained together and anchored to huge concrete blocks 150 feet below.
The concrete ships that make up the breakwater were built for use in the First and Second World Wars. Concrete ships were built when there was a shortage of plate steel for ship construction, but they were found to be too heavy in relation to their cargo-carrying capacity to compete with steel cargo vessels during peacetime.

The Powell River Floating Breakwater
Of all the concrete ships built during World War I and II, only 10 are known to still be afloat. These ships form a massive floating breakwater on the Malaspina Strait in the city of Powell River in British Columbia, Canada.
The breakwater was constructed to protect the log pond of the Powell River Company pulp and paper mill (later purchased by Pacifica Papers).
You can see the name of one of the ships, the Quartz. In July, 1946, the Quartz participated in the first atomic bomb tests at the Bikini Atoll.
On October 23, 1947, the Quartz was finally purchased by the Powell River Company and used as part of their breakwater.

Employees Offer Life Line to Ailing Paper Company
CROFTON - Catalyst paper is clawing its way back from near bankruptcy. The financially struggling pulp and paper company has been given a much needed life line from union members working at its mills on Vancouver Island.
Friday night over three hundred members of the Crofton mill's Pulp and Paper Woodworkers Union voted in favour of accepting a new labour contract. Cutting the deal was not easy for the mill workers union in Crofton. After rejecting a deal early this year Catalyst fell deeper into financial trouble, eventually seeking creditor protection. This did not make for a lucrative contract deal for union members in Crofton, Port Alberni, and Powell River. Over one thousand mill workers accepted less pay, fewer vacation days , and drawn back benefits so Catalyst can save upwards of 20 million dollars.
Company president Kevin J. Clarke offered his thanks to the people striving to save the company, their jobs, and mill communities . Clarke said in a media statement released Monday morning, the people who make up Catalyst are taking the actions necessary to save jobs and ensure we have a viable and competitive business for the future.
Mill employees have done their part to aid Catalyst, now the ball is in the companies court to revive the financially strapped paper giant.

Underwater on the YOGN-82 artificial reef in BC
British Columbia has a new addition to its waters - the artificial reef YOGN-82. A former US WWII gasoline barge, YOGN-82 has been part of Catalyst Paper’s Powell River breakwater for some years, finally being delivered to it's new home this past Saturday by the Artificial Reef Society of BC. Over the coming years it will become a bustling marine life habitat and a welcome addition #beneathBC
Thanks to Pacific Pro Dive & Marine Adventures dive for providing the best YOGN-82 charters, to Krystal Janicki for a couple of behind the scenes clips, Chris Broadbent and Helen Whitaker for being great dive buddies!
