Cat Ba Island, Cost of Living -2019
Cat Ba Island, Vietnam - Cost of Living - Travel Guide
From June through July, Cat by Island is a very active place during the offseason, it is fairly empty, and living on the island for a month could easily be less than $700, making it an attractive place for an extended visa run. The main strip of Cat Ba Island is full of hotels, restaurants, and shops. Cat Ba town is rather small, so getting around town by foot is easy. For many people, Cat Ba may be too small for long term living since most activities are for tourists visiting for a short time and foreign residents tend to be nomadic, However, it can be a great place for a short-term getaway.
Cat Ba Restaurants:
There’s plenty of fresh seafood around town and a few western options too. There are several karaoke restaurants in the bay. You can catch a taxi boat from the pier that will shuttle you to the restaurants. Like Coffee serves real espresso and cappuccino and it’s a great place to try Vietnamese egg coffee. Oasis is an all-around good restaurant during the day and bar at night. Mona’s Rooftop Is your best choice for vegan options and has a nice rooftop restaurant with a chill environment. They also have nice, sea view rooms with balconies. Yummy Restaurant also has vegetarian options and excellent Vietnamese BBQ. Their Thai style soup with a fresh fruit shake is just $2.64 or with a fresh coconut for $2.86.
Cat Ba Accommodations, where to stay on Cat Ba Island:
It’s best to stay in Cat Ba Town. During high season, it’s best to book a room ahead of time. During the low season, many hotels will offer a good discount for a long-term stay. I booked a simple room with a balcony, off the main strip, for $6 per night and stayed there for two nights while I looked around and found this beachfront room, on the main strip, on the top floor for $270 USD for the month. During the off-season, rooms can be found much cheaper.
Getting Around Cat Ba Island:
From Cat Ba Town, you can easily walk to several nice beaches, a few resorts, and many restaurants.
To explore the island, you’ll want a motorbike. The asking price is about $5-6 per day. I asked around a few places and found one off the main strip for $3.50. per day.
You can get to and from Cat Ba Island and Hanoi as well as other cities by booking a bus/boat/bus combo Prices start around 11 USD. I booked my trip through Good Morning Cat Ba and they included hotel pickup and drop off.
Cat Ba Island Things to Do:
Boat trips to Ha Long Bay are the main attraction of the area. A day cruise will cost about $20 per person and an overnight cruise, will be around $50-100 USD per person. I don’t recommend more than one night on the boat since many of the cruises repeat the same activities at the same places on the third day.
Cat Ba Island Tours, Cat Ba Ventures:
Boat tours will usually include several activities like; sightseeing stops in Halong Bay, kayaking in calm bays with caves to explore, a good lunch prepared on the boat, swimming, snorkeling, a stop at a pearl farm and a visit to Monkey Island.
Ha Long Bay, Vietnam:
Booking a boat tour of Ha Long Bay from Cat Ba island has a couple of advantages. They tend to be cheaper than trips booked from other areas and you also will see parts of the bay that are less traveled by the many cruises departing from the mainland.
There are several nice swimming beaches on Cat Ba within walking distance from the town. The beaches have bars and restaurants that are reasonably priced.
There’s a nice walkway around the peninsula that connects two of the beaches. Catba Sunrise Resort has a bar and restaurant, and sun-shaded beach chairs available for about $3.00.
On the point just outside of town, you’ll find Le Pont Club and Le Pont Bungalow Hostel It’s a great place to enjoy a sunset view over Lan Ha Bay.
Cat Ba National Park:
The national park is a good place for hiking. For a small fee, you can hire a guide at the national park entrance. Another place that’s worth a stop is the Temple at the bay by the North Ferry Terminal. There’s a wooden footbridge about a kilometer long that leads to the temple.
Cat Ba Island Climbing:
Rock Climbing is also popular on the island with Butterfly Valley and Hidden Valley are the most popular. Rock climbing guides are available several places in town.
Cat Ba Island Weather – Best Time to Visit Cat Ba:
In general, for the nicest weather, the best time to visit Cat Ba Island is between April and November.
June through August, the energy level is high as the island gets filled with tourists.
If you want to escape from the crowd and visit Cat Ba Island during its low season. The crowds start dropping off in September. Visiting during October and November is an ideal choice.
Some people find the winter months a little depressing, others enjoy the town when it’s calm ant the beaches are uncrowded.

Welcome to Cat Ba Island, located along the southeastern edge of Lan Ha Bay in Northern Vietnam. Cat Ba Island is the largest island in the Bay and half of the area is covered by national Parks. So if you are a nature lover the island is just the place for you.
We got here through Sliver Sea - 4 Star Cruise and transfer to a smaller boat to fetch us to Cat Ba Island while we stay there there for a night. We tried to explore as much as we can, like going to a Seafood Market, strolling down a beach, drinking at a local Bar, having a massage and many more.

Cat ba island - vietnam 2019
Cat Ba Island is the largest island in Halong Bay and is home to plenty of hotels, restaurants, and bars. Just about every tour company in Hanoi offers daily trips to the island, attracting travellers looking to enjoy a day of sightseeing during their holiday. Located off the coast of Hai Phong City, its beaches (named Cat Co 1 and Cat Co 2) are great for sunbathing and swimming during the summer months. If you’re not a fan of crowds on the beach, you can charter a speedboat or rent a kayak to Monkey Island and Lan Ha Bay, where the beaches are cleaner and quieter.
Best Time to Go The best time to go to Cat Ba Island is during the summer, between April and November. It’s also peak tourist season in Halong Bay, with numerous boat tours stopping on the island. The beaches can be very crowded with fellow tourists so we recommend heading there early to find a good spot. Make sure to book well in advance as hotels are also pricier this time of the year. For better deals, visit from September to November as crowds are significantly smaller as the climate on Cat Ba Island transitions into monsoon season.

Cat Ba Island to Phong Nha – SOFT SLEEPER train in Vietnam | EP81
It took us 24 hours to get from Cat Ba Island to Phong Nha. We started off with a bus across Cat Ba island, then took a ferry across the small stretch of water that separates Cat Ba from mainland Vietnam, afterwards we hopped on another bus to Hanoi. Once in Hanoi we had to walk 1km across town to the train station, wait several hours and finally board our soft sleeper train to Dong Hoi. We arrived a bit tired and weary, but after refreshing ourselves with breakfast we hired two scooters and set off for the final part of our journey to Phong Nha National Park.

Hi we’re Gem & Alex Swan, in 2017 we quit our jobs, rented out our house and set off on the adventure of a lifetime. We’ve been travelling continuously since then, and have been lucky enough to have some amazing experiences and meet some great people.
Before our trip we were glued to YouTube, every evening we watched travel vlogs by @karaandnate, @lifeofjord, @lostleblanc @markwiens and @funforlouis, and these content creators inspired us to document our travels on YouTube too. We bought a new camera, and started the steep learning curve of shooting and editing videos, and producing travel vlogs of our epic trip!
We have four main passions:
- The underwater world – having scuba dived in over 100 spots over the last year, from beautiful coral reefs to amazing ship wrecks, with plenty of fish and of course lots of sharks, we are totally hooked!!
- Fantastic food – we try to seek out amazing local dishes in every country we visit, and particularly like to eat at local street food stands (but so far nothing beats Vietnam, or maybe India, oh and Thailand is pretty good too…!)
- Beautiful natural landscapes – from the snow capped mountains of Nepal, to beautiful white sand beaches of the Philippines to stunning rice terraces of Indonesia – we like to seek out these amazing natural landscapes
- Local wildlife – we shun the zoo’s and instead concentrate on trying to find local wildlife in it’s natural habitat! So far we’ve been super lucky, Tigers in India, Elephants in Sri Lanka, Orangutans in Malaysia, Whales in Australia and Penguins in New Zealand – to name just a few!
Thanks for watching our video – if you enjoyed it please help us to continue travelling by hitting the subscribe button and giving us a comment!

Adeyto ⚓???????? HA LONG BAY to LAN HA BAY & CAT BA ISLAND $4 Ferry DRACO QK3 HOTEL
for under $4 USD you will take the Ferry from Tuan Chau Island to Cat Ba Island and on the way you will get to see the landscape of Ha Long Bay, you will pass through the gulf where the luxury cruises are anchored and empty during the day while their customers are shoveled to the cave & kayak activities together with the standard day trip tourists. After passing by these ships we will even get to see a small part of the fascinating Floating Village before reaching the port of Cat Ba Island. There you should get off immediately to be one of the first to get to the one bus that transfers people to the Cat Ba Center because the bus is small and people might have huge backpacker luggage and you might get no seat if you are the last one to board the bus. It costs less than $1.5 to get where all hotels are and it will cross the entire island for this taking some 20-30 minutes. There are also taxis and scooters at the Ferry port area but of course the bus is the cheapest option and you should hurry to get the seat.
The nice hotels are facing a bay that at night is filled with pretty lit-up boats fishing for squid. It was the first time that I didn't book a hotel in advance and I walked along the promenade to see with my own eyes what hotel and surroundings i like. So happy to have walked all the way to Draco QK3 Hotel and upon asking the staff if they have rooms on the top floor with bay view, he was so kind to take me see the room before deciding if i should stay there. Very clean and cute room with shower and an unbeatable view allover the bay from the balcony!! And very Quiet!! Read reviews of other hotels close to bars where the party is going on till late and so it was wonderful to be in such quiet area. Most of the locals use scooters instead of walking so there's always traffic and then they aggressively use their hoops to notify each-other to not crash so this hoop sound pollution can be quite annoying when staying at a lower floor and closer to the center of the bay strip. Breakfast included $21 and they cooked delicious dinner for me. Paid everything with credit card, would definitely stay there again, staff spoke English too.
The Secret Of Halong Bay: CATBA ISLAND
This is CatBa Island on Halong Bay. It's a tiny island a little way fro the main tourist area of Halong although it is STILL touristy just with much less people espeically in low season which is when we went. There are lots of things to do and it's great fun, the food is very impressive..
If you want some cool things to do in Catba Island try going to the 'Good Bar', The Sky Bar, book a cruise with Catba Vision (I have a vlog of this going live soon) and check out the local beaches. One of them was actually just a construction site though so maybe ina year or so this would be better.
I think in just a few years time this destination will be so developed and there will be loads of people here, more than there were when I went.

Ha Long Bay Cruise 2020
Ha Long Bay Cruise 2020
VIETNAM
Halong Bay is an impressive geographical formation in northern Vietnam. It has over 1,900 islets with pristine beaches, limestone caves, inland lakes, and floating villages. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, the best way to experience this landscape is by boat.
Depending on your budget, you can opt for a luxurious cruiser or budget diesel-powered junk to explore Halong Bay. Do allow for at least an overnight stay as there are plenty of things to see and do here. These cruises typically include English-speaking guides, hotel transfers, and entrance fees, meals, and on-board entertainment. Here’s a rundown of everything you need to know about Ha Long Bay cruises.
Joining a two-day, one-night Ha Long Bay cruise is a good option for first-timers. You get to discover various islets, beaches, villages, and grottoes on a more relaxed pace. It also offers stops for swimming, fishing, snorkelling, kayaking, and trekking. If you're not a fan of outdoor activities, you can just relax and admire the stunning scenery.
Ha Long Bay cruises vary depending on the season and weather. One of the most popular stops in Halong Bay is Cat Ba Island. It has floating villages, hotels, restaurants, and bars that are set against a backdrop of lush mountains. The island is also home to endangered animals, such as Cat Ba langurs, southern serows, black giant squirrels, and civet cats.
Located 28 km from Bai Chay Port, Dau Be Island is another island listed on most Ha Long Bay cruises. It's a prominent swimming and diving spot with a rich coral system, deep grottoes, and six inland lakes. You can only visit the caves by rowing boat at low tide. You can spot golden monkeys and flying squirrels here.
Bo Hon Island is where you can find Halong Bay’s most famous caves. Sung Sot, Trinh Nu and Trong Cave are set against a backdrop of mountains, cliffs, and lush forest. Accessible within a two-hour boat ride from Bai Chay Port, it’s widely regarded as Halong Bay’s natural park. There are plenty of cycads, orchids, and banyan trees. It's also home to wild monkeys, deer, and chamois.
Ti Top Island is 8km southeast of Bai Chay Port. The islet was named in 1962 after a visit from former Soviet Union astronaut, Ghermann Titop. The beach is its main draw, where tourists can enjoy swim or lounge on the sandbank. High-end resorts, hotels, restaurants, bars, and souvenir shops are set along Ti Top Beach. Take the 400-step stairway to the peak of Ti Top Island to enjoy a panoramic view of Ha Long Bay.
For more than 5000 years, these islands are home to locals living mainly on agriculture and fishing. Ha Long Bay now houses just a few fishing villages, namely Cong Dam, Cua Van, Viet Hai, and Vung Vieng. Here, travellers can join kayak tours, visit a pearl farm, try fishing with local fishermen, or simply observe their daily lives.
No trip to Halong Bay is complete without a visit to its limestone caves and grottoes. Most are home to stalactites and stalagmites that are over 2 million years old. Dau Go Cave is one of the most visited caves in the bay. You can see stalactites and stalagmites that are 20 metres tall. An English-speaking guide leads you through a 90-step stairway to get to the cave. It's has three main sections that are illuminated with natural and artificial lighting. There are formations in shapes of people, animals, and objects. At the end of Dau Go Cave is a small pond with clear water. Locals claim that fairies use the pond to descend to Earth.
Trinh Nu or Virgin Cave has a statue of a woman. She was turned into stone after her death, having unable to return home after being forced to marry an old Mandarin. Local legend states that she escaped from him because her father could not pay a debt. When fishermen found her body, they buried her and built a small shrine inside the grotto.
Sung Sot Cave has two chambers with a square-shaped outer chamber and a 30-metre-tall limestone ceiling. Set within Bo Hon Island, its inner chamber formations resemble sentries conversing with one another. There’s another formation in the middle of the chamber that looks like a general surveying his troops.
The Kissing Rocks islets are undoubtedly the symbols of Halong Bay. The two rocks resemble a rooster and a hen facing each other. Locals believe they symbolise eternal love as they've been in Halong Bay for thousands of years.
