What to See and Eat in Edirne, Turkey
What to See and Eat in Edirne, Turkey
►Read the blog:
Come with David as he explores what to see and where to eat in Edirne, Turkey. The city is located in northwestern Turkey near the borders of Greece and Bulgaria. Edirne served as the second capital city of the Ottoman Empire, making it no wonder why it is steeped in history. There is a great deal of history to see in Edirne!
David’s first stop in Edirne is to see the massive 16th century Selimiye Mosque looking over the city. Anyone can enter the mosque (remember to remove your shoes and dress appropriately) to see the beautiful calligraphy and admire the giant dome. Attached to Selimiye Mosque is a small bazaar. The Tower of Macedon is up next. What looks like nothing more than a pile of stones is actually one of four ramparts of a castle built during the Roman Empire. In that time Edirne was known as Hadrianopolis, meaning Hadrian’s City.
After being outside, David heads indoors to the 16th century Ali Pasha Bazaar to get out of the heat and do some souvenir shopping. Though not nearly as large as Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, the Ali Pasha Bazaar does have several vendors (about 130) selling everything from toys and rugs, to shoes and jewelry. There are also great souvenirs here such as scented soaps, spices, and Turkish delight. The Ali Pasha Mosque is walking distance from Selimiye Mosque.
Now for David’s favorite places to eat in Edirne. First restaurant he visits is Villa Restaurant, a beautiful space overlooking the Maritsa River. Villa Restaurant is large because is used for weddings and corporate events, but for lunch it is quite and casual, perfect stop after a day of sightseeing. David tried some refreshing salad and grilled lamb skewers for lunch. No visit to Edirne is complete without dining at Kofteci Osman, a restaurant specializing in Turkish meatballs known as Kofteci.
Located in the city center, Kofteci Osman serves up juicy meatballs and tons of fried lamb liver. If you’re craving more home-style Turkish food, have dinner at Melek Anne. Situated in the city center, Melek Anne is owned by Ms. Sibil, who cooks the food daily. David chose a little bit of everything: pasta, meatballs, and stuffed grape leaves. Last but not least, David heads into Cigercisi Kemal Usta to have the undisputed “best fried liver in Edirne.” The only thing on the menu is fried liver and hot peppers, so even if you don’t speak Turkish you can’t get confused when ordering. If you haven’t had fried liver before, you are missing out! David had it with a cold glass of Ayran, which is a yogurt drink that helps protect your stomach lining and helps with digestion.
And there you have David’s suggestions for what to see and where to eat in Edirne.

Izmir
Izmir is Turkey's third largest city and second most important port on the Aegean coast. Luxury hotels and facilities for sports, entertainment, shopping and business meetings give the city a cosmopolitan and lively atmosphere all year round.
Canakkale
Canakkale is the most popular base for visiting the ruins at Troy, as well as Gallipoli, and has become a very popular destination for tourists.
Trabzon
Trabzon on the Black Sea coast has its own Hagia Sophia from the 13th century and makes a good base to visit the cliff-hugging Sumela Monastery set in the spectacular semi-tropical forested landscape that so typifies this region.
Turkey is situated at the crossroads of the Balkans, Caucasus, Middle East, and eastern Mediterranean. It is among the larger countries of the region in terms of territory and population, and its land area is greater than that of any European state. Nearly all of the country is in Asia, comprising the oblong peninsula of Asia Minor—also known as Anatolia (Anadolu)—and, in the east, part of a mountainous region sometimes known as the Armenian Highland. The remainder—Turkish Thrace (Trakya)—lies in the extreme southeastern part of Europe, a tiny remnant of an empire that once extended over much of the Balkans.
The country has a north-south extent that ranges from about 300 to 400 miles (480 to 640 km), and it stretches about 1,000 miles from west to east. Turkey is bounded on the north by the Black Sea, on the northeast by Georgia and Armenia, on the east by Azerbaijan and Iran, on the southeast by Iraq and Syria, on the southwest and west by the Mediterranean Sea and the Aegean Sea, and on the northwest by Greece and Bulgaria. The capital is Ankara, and its largest city and seaport is Istanbul.
Of a total boundary length of some 4,000 miles (6,440 km), about three-fourths is maritime, including coastlines along the Black Sea, the Aegean, and the Mediterranean, as well as the narrows that link the Black and Aegean seas. These narrows—which include the Bosporus, the Sea of Marmara, and the Dardanelles—are known collectively as the Turkish straits; Turkey’s control of the straits, the only outlet from the Black Sea, has been a major factor in its relations with other states. Most of the islands along the Aegean coast are Greek; only the islands of Gökçeada and Bozcaada remain in Turkish hands. The maritime boundary with Greece has been a source of dispute between the two countries on numerous occasions since World War II.

Ali Paşa (Ali Pasha) (Grand Bazaar) Bazaar
For more:
Alipaşa Bazaar was built by Sinan the Architect in 1569, by the order of Herseki Semiz Ali Pasha, one of the last grand viziers of Sultan Suleyman The Magnificent.
One of the most active trade centers of the 16th and 17th centuries, the bazaar is a work of art with 300 meters of length and 6 gateways.
The arches inside the bazaar are built in stones and bricks.
The gate my the tower is called Kule Kapısı (Tower Gate) and the other one by the fish market is called Balık Kapısı (Fish Gate).
According to Evliya Chelebi, the fact that a hundred watchmen patrol the bazaar each night is an evidence of the value of the goods sold.
There are 130 shops in Alipaşa Bazaar, flooded with domestic and foreign visitors today.
Various goods are sold in the bazaar, having only a few tradesmen who sell valuables like gold or silver.
Alipaşa Bazaar was burnt down completely by the fire of September 26, 1992.
It was reopened in November 25, 1997 following the faithful restoration of the structure, also taking into account the needs of our time.
Today, the bazaar significantly contributes to the commercial life in Edirne, attracting domestic and foreign tourist.
