Cycling on the Granite Way to Meldon viaduct
The Granite Way used to be part of the railway line linking Okehampton and Plymouth, around the west side of Dartmoor. Now it's a cycle track and footpath, although there is talk of reopening the railway link as an alternative to the coastal railway route that gets damaged by winter storms at Dawlish.

Sourton Cross Travelodge. Clean. Polite friendly staff. Even though by a busy A road there good sound proofing. 4 electric sockets. 1 digital TV with Freeview. 30 minutes of free WIFi. There is strong 4g and weak 4g on the O2 network. Electric heater you can control the temperature nice and warm. There is a bath with shower. The water is easy to control and very warm. In my room there was a double bed and single bed. I even had bit of a view of sourton tor from the window. There is a burger king, Subway, Greg's and Waitrose right next to it. It is a motel but I arrived by foot and was not to hard to get to. I used as a base while doing some winter hiking and camping in Dartmoor. My stay was £25 per night.

Beneath Lydford Viaduct: (Dartmoor, Devon, UK).
Lydford Viaduct carried the former Southern Railway between Okehampton and Plymouth. To the north of Lydford, the railway is now the Granite Way bike-path to Okehampton but Lydford Viaduct is disused and, although it was possible to access the top deck (former roadbed), it's so overgrown with bushes and trees that taking any pictures there was impossible.
It may be that the viaduct will see trains again as one of the options for bypassing the Dawlish sea wall is to reopen the railway from Exeter to Plymouth around the north of Dartmoor.
This is the railway option that I favour as it would give better access to West Devon which is a very isolated area - why should South Devon have all the trains?
Beneath the viaduct flows the River Lyd through Lydford Gorge. Further down the river the Gorge is a National Trust Property but this upper part of the Gorge is open to all by walking down a public footpath and is a very quiet place.

The L&SWR opened Meldon Viaduct in 1874 on the line to Plymouth via Okehampton. The viaduct closed in 1968 to passenger traffic and after a spell as road bridge became part of the Granite Path pedestrian and cyclepath route.

A sunny May bank holiday cycle down route 27, between Shaugh tunnel and Riverford Viaduct in the Plym Valley. The cycle route uses the old South Devon and Tavistock Railway branch line, which closed to trains in 1962. Now a very popular traffic-free walking and cycling route that links-up with various other trails and cycle routes on the edge of Dartmoor National Park.
