Your Guide to the West Coast - New Zealand
Known simply as 'The Coast' to New Zealanders, this region stretches 600km from Kahurangi Point in the north, to Awarua Point in the south. The Tasman Sea crashes onto the western shores, whilst the Southern Alps dominate the eastern borders. The rugged wilderness of this part of New Zealand means the area is sparsely-populated by permanent residents, despite towns like Hokitika being home to over 25,000 people during the boom of the gold rush.
These days, the West Coast largely remains as nature intended -- a region dominated by beautiful, forest-clad coastlines, transparent rivers and lakes, luminous mountains and diverse wildlife. And don't forget the glaciers...

OKARITO WEST COAST NEW ZEALAND 2019
Okarito is a magical spot for nature lovers and the ornithologically inclined. Set on a sandspit snug beneath the Southern Alps, 25km from Franz Josef Township, the land folds towards Okarito Lagoon, combining rainforest and wetland to great effect.
Renowned for its animated estuary and boisterous Tasman Sea beyond, this area has always been a haven for birdlife.
For Maori making regular visits to the area since their arrival an estimated 600 years ago, the region would've been a giant pantry with kai from land, sea and sky keeping the people well provisioned.
In fact Okarito is Maori for place of the young bulrush shoots which are said to be rather tasty when picked young.
The Terrace track
This easy walk winds a short way along the bush-clad terraces at the south end of the village.
There is no access beyond the bridge due to a slip and you will need to return the way you came.
Take a torch and explore this walk at night to see glow-worms in the forest, especially under and around large fallen trees alongside the track.

New Zealand Self-drive Trip, 2015 Day 8 (Journey to Greymouth)
Departed from Franz Josef township drove towards the final destination at Greymouth, west coast NZ. This is our shortest road trip journey and we reached Greymouth on time and early to explore other places of interest. You can find a lot of NZ green-stone (jade) along west coast, and also a delicious food at Hokitika, yum yum. NZ west coast was very popular during the gold rush period but now popular for tourism.

Haast Pass, Gate of Haast, Wanaka to West Coast New Zealand
The drive from Wanaka to the West Coast passes through spectacular scenery. This route was a traditional pathway for Maori journeying west in search of pounamu (greenstone or jade). The basins that are filled by Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka were gouged out by the Hawea and Wanaka Glaciers. Two arms of the glaciers joined at a narrow piece of land called The Neck.
Makarora, at the northern tip of Lake Wanaka, is a launching point for several multi-day walks in Mount Aspiring National Park. A number of shorter walks begin at the highway's edge between Makarora to Haast. Favourites include walks to the Blue Pools, Fantail Falls, Thunder Creek Falls and Roaring Billy. At the Gates of Haast gorge, many travellers stop to photograph the wild water as it crashes over the river boulders.
