A Day in Winchester: King Arthur's Round Table
Come and join me on my explorations of the city of Winchester - a place steeped in Tudor History. It is home to amazing historical buildings such as Winchester Cathedral, Wolsevey Castle and The Great Hall where I found King Arthur's Round Table! I even paid my respects at the final resting place of Miss Jane Austen. For all you Disney Tangled fans I also stumbled across Winchester's own Snuggly Duckling pub! King Arthur's Round Table, Winchester, England
A visit to the thirteenth-century Round Table in Winchester's Great Hall which was painted (as seen today) during the reign of Henry VIII.
The Round Table was first described by the Norman poet Wace in the mid-twelfth century. Near the end of the Middle Ages, during the Wars of the Roses 1455-1485, Sir Thomas Malory completed the first prose reworking of the Arthurian legend in Middle English 'Le Morte D'Arthur' while under house arrest, competing it in 1469 or 1470.
The twenty-four knights which appear on the round table in addition to King Arthur:
Sir Galahad, Sir Lancelot, Sir Gawain, Sir Percival, Sir Lionel, Sir Tristan, Sir Gareth, Sir Bedivere, Sir Blioberis, Sir La Cote Mal Taile, Sir Lucan, Sir Palamedes, Sir Lamorak, Sir Bors, Sir Saphar, Sir Pellinore, Sir Kay, Sir Ector, Sir Dagonet, Sir Degore, Sir Brunar, Sir Guinglain, Sir Alymore, Sir Mordred

Winchester is a city and the county town of Hampshire, England. The city of Winchester lies at the heart of the wider City of Winchester, a local government district, and is located at the western end of the South Downs National Park, along the course of the River Itchen. Winchester is situated 61 miles (98 km) south-west of London and 13.6 miles (21.9 km) from Southampton, its closest city.
Winchester developed from the Roman town of Venta Belgarum, which in turn developed from an Iron Age oppidum. Winchester's major landmark is Winchester Cathedral, one of the largest cathedrals in Europe, with the distinction of having the longest nave and overall length of all Gothic cathedrals in Europe. The city is home to the University of Winchester and Winchester College, the oldest public school in the United Kingdom still to be using its original buildings.
Winchester is situated on a bed of cretaceous lower chalk with small areas of clayey and loamy soil, inset with combined clay and rich sources of Fuller's earth. Aside from the city centre, there are several suburbs and neighbourhoods within the city, including:
Hyde
Abbotts Barton
Fulflood
Weeke
Winnall
Highcliffe
Stanmore
Upper Stanmore
Lower Stanmore
Teg Down
Badger Farm
Oliver's Battery
St. Cross
Bar End

Winchester is located near the M3 motorway and at the meeting of the A34, A31, A3090 and A272 roads. Once a major traffic bottleneck, the city still suffers from congestion at peak times. A Roman road originating in Salisbury called The Clarendon Way ends in Winchester. Winchester railway station is served by South West Trains trains from London Waterloo, Weymouth, Portsmouth and Southampton, as well as by CrossCountry between Bournemouth, and either Manchester or Newcastle via Birmingham.

Rediscovering Medieval Winchester: England's early capital city
Winchester. Once a Roman market town, this city became a site of importance in early medieval England. In the ninth century, Alfred the Great would establish it as his principal city in the kingdom of Wessex, and from that point onwards it developed into a key site for religious, royal and economic activity; the three core components of the early medieval capital city.
But how much of this history is still visible today? How is Winchester’s early medieval importance understood to the modern mind? A closer look of what remains here in Winchester today will allow us to understand the prominence of the city in the early medieval period, and also allow us to reflect on how early medieval Winchester is perceived today. We will be asking whether what remains reflects Winchester’s status as the early medieval capital city.
Our documentary forms part of our second year history degree course at the University of Southampton.

Winchester | King Arthur's ROUND TABLE | The Great Hall | 06Sep13
The artifact known famously as the Winchester Round Table, is a large round tabletop hanging in Winchester Castle inside its Great Hall. It bears the names of various knights of Arthur's court and was probably created for a Round Table tournament.
During the Middle Ages, festivals called Round Tables were celebrated throughout Europe in imitation of Arthur's court. These events featured jousting, dancing, and feasting, and in some cases attending knights assumed the identities of Arthur's knights. The earliest of these was held in Cyprus in 1223 to celebrate a knighting. Round Tables were popular in various European countries through the rest of the Middle Ages and were at times very elaborate; René of Anjou even erected an Arthurian castle for his 1446 Round Table. On 19 December 1566, in Stirling Castle, Mary Queen of Scots gave a feast with 30 guests at an imagined replica of Arthur's round table during the masque-themed celebrations of the baptism of the future James VI.
According to legend, the Round Table which hangs in the Great Hall of Winchester Castle is the table around which King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table met, and it has been famous for centuries for its associations with the legendary 'Once and Future King'. Although we now know that it originated many centuries later, the table's mystique still remains.
It was still created in about the year 1290, for a tournament near Winchester to celebrate the betrothal of one of Edward I's daughters. When the table was taken down from the wall and investigated by a team of scientists in 1976, tree ring evidence and carbon dating placed it in the 13th or early 14th century which supports that idea.
Originally it was a standing table with 12 outer legs and a central support. It measures 5.5 metres in diameter, weighs 1200kg and was constructed from English oak. It has hung on the west wall of the Great Hall, Winchester since 1873, when it was moved from the east wall where it had hung since at least 1540, and possibly since 1348.
In the early years of King Henry VIII's reign the table was painted with the Tudor Rose at its centre and is thought to portray Henry as King Arthur on his throne, surrounded by 24 places for his Knights of the Round Table.
The current paintwork was done by order of Henry VIII of England for Holy Roman Emperor Charles V's 1522 state visit, and depicts Henry himself sitting in Arthur's seat above a Tudor rose. The table itself is considerably older; dendrochronology calculates the date of construction to 1250--1280—during the reign of Edward I—using timber from store felled over a period of years. Edward was an Arthurian enthusiast who attended at least five Round Tables and hosted one himself in 1299, which may have been the occasion for the creation of the Winchester Round Table. Martin Biddle, from an examination of Edward's financial accounts, links it instead with a tournament Edward held near Winchester on April 20, 1290, to mark the betrothal of one of his daughters.
A bronze statue of Queen Victoria stands in the Great Hall, Winchester. It was made by Alfred Gilbert, who also designed Eros in Piccadilly, London, to commemorate the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 1887. It stood outside in Winchester for a while, gaining the attention of pigeons, before being brought into the Great Hall after its use as a courtroom had finished.

exploring the City of Winchester, England
Prior to my pilgrimage along The Pilgrim's Way from Winchester to Canterbury in August 2018, I spent a couple of days in Southampton...within easy reach of Winchester by train, I spent a day in Winchester exploring. Not my first visit, and probably not the last :) It is one of my favourite cities in the UK
The Forty Part Motet @ The Great Hall, Winchester
The Forty Part Motet is a recording of forty separate voices played back through forty individual speakers. This unique and uplifting performance invites the listeners to immerse themselves in the moving sounds of 'Spem in Alium' by Thomas Tallis, sung by Salisbury Cathedral Choir. Listeners can place themselves in the heart of the choir, as waves of sound wash over them, or move closer to the speakers to hear a single choral voice.
