Hiking the Green Corridor, Singapore (aka let's walk across a country) - Vlog #12
Last fortnight I said I'd go on a hike. I ended up hiking across the entire country instead, but you can't necessarily escape the urban jungle.
Skip to 7:15 for a Green Corridor Q&A on what to look out for, and stuff like whether you can ride your bike or bring your dog.
The Green Corridor is CLOSING as part of the PUB Murnane Pipeline Project.

The Railway Green Corridor, Singapore
#thesupplelife
A 6th Oct 2019 Sunday morning ride with the gravel bikers from Ditch Work To Ride (DWTR) and Kayuh Kuat Kuat (KKK) gang. I was on my Jones 29+ steel bike.
Four of us entered the green corridor via Stagmont Ring and rode all the way towards Hillview to meet the rest. Our meeting point - Springleaf Prata Place at The Railway Mall....Yummmms :)
After the sumptuous prata meal, we made our way towards Bukit Timah Railway Station via the roads as certain sections of the green corridor are closed due to PUB pipeline works while the stretch that covers the railway bridge near Railway Mall are closed for repairs/ maintenance.
We ventured through the gravel routes as well as the newly paved path until we reached the end of the trail at Jalan Kilang Barat. This route from Jalan Kilang Barat to Tanjong Pagar Railway Station should be ready by 2020.
Anyway, do check out this other video of our fun ride as well :

Vlog #018: Singapore's Green Corridor (Aug 2018)
The Green Corridor of Singapore was previously the KTM Railway Track now converted for public use. The track runs north to south of Singapore from Woodlands to Tanjong Pagar. Due to its strategic spinal connection, Public Utilities Board (PUB) has been laying huge water pipes under this track to supply for future needs in newly developed parts of the Marina Bay district. Sivasothi (@otterman) and I explore the pockets of tracks open for public to use, while works are ongoing for the next few years.

NOTE - This is a reupload. Had to something with the really bad gimbal motor whine (took 3 denoiser + 1 equalizer passes... damn tedious). Just realised this only happens with the GoPro Session 5 while its not a problem when the Xiaomi Yi is mounted on the Zhiyun Evolution stabilizer.

The rail corridor is the former KTM railway line in Singapore from Tanjong Pagar up to the Woodlands border crossing to Johor Bahru in Malaysia.
This video covers the upper half between Bukit Timah and Kranji/Woodlands. The southward half to Tanjong Pagar is currently closed for the Murmane Pipeline Project.
The northern half seems less popular than the other. It could be because there's a lot of road crossing required to complete it. Whereas the lower half does not have any at all. In fact, it has hosted a number of 10k train runs before its temporary closure.
Mountain Biking The Green Corridor/Zhenghua NP/Track 15, Singapore | TO THE ZOO & BACK!
On the job with school outdoor facilitator Holly Brigham, scouting a novice-friendly MTB route from Bukit Timah Hill, past the Zhenghua suburbs, and north till Mandai Road for an upcoming guided ride. We chat about mountain bike guiding principles, managing young people in an outdoor environment, stinky tropical fruits, and find a public bike repair stand at the end of the trail! This video reveals the landmarks, junctions, and trail features - on a route suited to trail novices who are ready for a longer ride and keen to explore our local trails further.

A new look at the Rail Corridor from the eyes of a drone
URA planners recently worked with drone company Avetics and the Infocomm Development Authority Labs (IDA Labs) to take a fresh look at the Rail Corridor from a bird’s eye view. This aerial footage provokes new ideas and insights by showing a different side of the Rail Corridor, including iconic landmarks along the Corridor such as the beloved Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, Bukit Timah Railway Station, Buona Vista and Hillview/Rail Mall.
Hiking Across Singapore - The Green Corridor
In this episode, I decide to go for a hike...from the North (Kranji) to the South (Tanjong Pagar) of Singapore without any water and food. Was it worth it?

Black Snake at Green Corridor Singapore
Almost stepped onto this black snake while jogging along the Green Corridor. It quickly slithered into the bushes and I only managed to capture this.

Treadmill Virtual Run [4K] - Rail Corridor (Singapore) - Dec 2019
Status of the Rail Corridor as at Dec 2019:
- From the old Bukit Timah Railway Station it is still passable up to Holland Road extension but mostly via narrow trail along hoardings (target to clear Q1 2020?)
- Closed between Holland Road extension and main (target to open Q1 2020)
- Closed between North Buona Vista Road and Biopolis area (target to open Q1 2020)
- Closed from Jalan Kilang Barat all the way to Tanjong Pagar terminal (target to open Q2 2020)
Diversions
From Holland Road extension, take right to Holland Road main to find the Caltex station to resume. I took the longer way on the left via a residential area (Greenleaf). Though it is also harder with uphills, its also quieter. These neighborhood also reminds me of Quezon City suburbs (not rich ones, just normal neighborhoods).
From North Buona Vista Road, the easiest is along Commonwealth Ave and resume just before reaching the MRT station. Instead, I went through Buona Vista MRT and straight through Biopolis for its downtown and high tech feel (lots of sky bridges). The reentry to the corridor is via Biomedical Grove.
The turf they laid for the finished sections is very sticky when running. Sticky as in zero slide. Good for hiking, but for running if you switch between shoes of different treading (normal vs door-to-trail ones), ensure you get your foot strike right or you'll end up with painful shins.
Lost a bit of 4K detail here. Lesson for head mounting - always ensure camera is level. I had to rotate and scale up the entire video.

The Paul Wonnacott Former Rail Corridor Walk
Nature Society of Singapore (NSS) Green Corridor walk on the former Malayan Railway route on 26 December 2016. We assembled at Kranji MRT Station and began our hike at around 8.30 am. There were probably 200 participants. Hikers were divided into 2 waves. These photos depicted the 1st wave that walked north along the Mandai River, connecting to the Railway Line that has been newly marked '0 km' as proposed by Nature Society (Singapore). Weather was pleasantly cloudy at the beginning, and eventually throughout the hike. There were several second timers to this hike, the first one 24km held on the 27 Feb 2016.
There seemed to show more appreciation of the deteriorating environment this time as we hiked along, realizing many trees have been chopped for progressive development. We covered approximately 17 kilometers of walk, ending our trail at Bukit Timah railway station at about 1300hrs. We had a group photo and dispersed. In our hearts, we pray that the Green Corridor will be retained as a seamless 24 km-long public space that links nature and heritage for generations to come.

Bukit Panjang, Green Corridor, Bukit Timah Hike
This is the first of many hikes that we'll be cataloguing (We've already done several around Toa Payoh, Bukit Batok to Jurong, the Southern Ridges, Sin Ming to Marina Bay Sands, Serangoon to Sentosa. Today we had a new guest (Mark) to join our hike. The hike originally would have went through Bukit Timah Hill but we decided not to, as it would have been too tiring. We'll do it another day. We walked past Bukit Panjang to Bukit Timah (Churchland), bypassing Hillview towards Rail Mall. We then delved into the Green Corridor, a slim stretch of greenery along the old railway all the way to Bukit Timah Railway Station. Then, we cut through Old Holland Road and saw the new park connector and its beauty (Thanks NParks!).
