Secret gardens revealed at Longhirst
HOME owners in one of Northumberland’s prettiest villages are opening their gardens to public inspection in aid of a good cause.
Anyone who has travelled through Longhirst, near Morpeth, will have admired the attractive row of stone built houses and cottages which line the B1337 road running through its centre.
Many of the front gardens are a treat for the eye, but few people ever get to see the secrets which lie beyond.
Next weekend (July 4 and 5) there will be a rare chance to catch a glimpse of those areas usually only enjoyed by the owners themselves when the Longhirst Open Gardens and Flower Festival is staged.
Ten villagers have agreed to share the glory of their private gardens and raise money for much-needed works at the nearby Church of St John.
Residents have been busy putting the finishing touches to their plots over the past week, despite the worst that the English summer has thrown at them.
The Open Garden scheme began in 2005 when money was needed for urgent repairs to the church steeple. It proved a huge success and the event has been held bi-annually since then, raising more than £20,000 for the church and the village hall.
“This year the church desperately needs major refurbishment to bring it into the 21st Century,” said Mrs Jill Elphick, one of the organisers of the event. “We don’t have facilities for making teas and coffees and we are working on re-instating a broken central heating system.”
This video features just two of the gardens people will be able to visit. One was once the village farm, now occupied by fireman Richard Tordoff and his family. The acre plot is still a work in progress, but it demonstrates just what can be achieved through sheer hard work and determination. The other, tucked away down a lane off the main road, was once the walled garden of Longhirst Hall and includes the 190-year-old greenhouse designed by John Dobson. Its owner grew up near a prizewinning park in Gateshead and that has been his inspiration for a true labour of love.
Admission to the event is £5 each day or £8 for the weekend, with accompanied children free. Dogs on leads are welcome. Tickets will be available from stewards wearing reflective vests, who will also be supervising the free car parking on the approach to the village. Designated parking for disabled will be at both the church and village hall.
In addition to the gardens, there will be a host of other things to keep visitors occupied, including a classic car show on the Saturday.

Apropos | 0161 342 8217 | www.aproposuk.com
Apropos has been building glass structures that are both beautiful and functional for over 50 years. Our structures are durable too; the first, built under the brand name Hartley Botanic, is still in perfect working order today.
Apropos bespoke conservatories, pool houses, glass houses and studios were developed to give architects the freedom they have always desired. When we use the term bespoke glass structures we really do mean bespoke; each Apropos conservatory is custom manufactured; there are no standard components and no limits to what sizes and shapes can be produced.
The Apropos system consists of design, custom manufacture, trial build and installation to produce a glass and aluminium structure that will totally transform any home or building. The combination of glass and aluminium is a marriage of form and function. Glass admits light in abundance, whilst aluminium provides structural strength, durability and design flexibility.
Quality is a key part of the Apropos experience. All our structures comply with the relevant British Standards, and where necessary, our designs and calculations are checked by an independent structural engineer. But this is just compliance; at Apropos we are totally committed to quality at each and every stage of the process. Design quality, manufacturing quality, quality of installation and quality of customer service, all are guiding principles that every Apropos employee follows at all times. And in this way we can ensure that our bespoke glass structures are enjoyed for many years to come.
