VIDEO -- MUST SEE -- Hurricane Ophelia Hits Ireland Europe UK United Kingdom - Storm Ouragan Cork, Dublin 10/16/2017
The remnants of Hurricane Ophelia slammed into Ireland with wind gusts of up to 80 mph (130 kph) on Monday, killing at least three people, grounding planes, shutting schools and causing widespread power outages.Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar urged people to stay indoors until the storm passed. Tens of thousands of homes were without power and the military was placed on standby. Some hurricane-force gusts were reported 30 years to the day after a weather event dubbed the Great Storm of 1987 battered southern England. It is a very dangerous storm, Varadkar said. The last time there was a storm this severe, 11 lives were lost, he added, referring to Hurricane Debbie, which hit Ireland in 1961.Although Ophelia has been downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone, Ireland's National Emergency Coordination Group on Severe Weather warned that the storm is still unprecedented, with serious life-threatening conditions.Ireland's weather service, Met Eireann, described the storm as the most powerful on record to have ever been this far east in the Atlantic.Forecasters warned of flying debris, such as tiles blown from roofs. Large waves around coastal districts tossed sand and rocks onto coastal roads, seafronts and properties.
Wind warnings were in place for Northern Ireland, parts of Wales and western parts of England. Planes were grounded at several locations in the British Isles.
Some 130 flights were cancelled at Dublin Airport, while flights were also grounded at Manchester Airport. Both Ryanair and Easy Jet cancelled flights at Belfast International Airport, with more cancellations expected. Several flights to British airports were also diverted because of unusual odors on board thought to be associated with the remnants of the storm.
Authorities warned anyone with travel plans to contact their airline. posted pictures of London landmarks against yellow-orange skies.
A non-profit group that provides lifesaving services around the British Isles warned people to stay away from seas and beaches.
The sea is far more powerful than you think and your chances of survival are slim if you are dragged into the swell, he said.
And there is more to come Tuesday. Flights and ferries were cancelled in parts of Scotland. The government of Ireland said schools and colleges would remain closed, and Northern Ireland's Education Authority said the same.
As the storm moved toward Northern Ireland, workers sealed off the Peace Bridge in Londonderry with tape and sandbags, closing it as a precautionary measure.

★ Rover P5B
P5 is a common name for large passenger cars manufactured by Rover from 1958 to 1973.
It is a high-end car that hits the British middle class, and it is also used as a public car of successive prime ministers and government officials, and Queen Elizabeth preferred to drive the P5 himself as a private foot.
The final version of the P5 was called “P5B” because it was equipped with a compact and lightweight aluminum engine developed by GM, and was manufactured from 1967 to 1973.
V-type 8-cylinder OHV engine installed vertically at the front, with two carburetors, delivers maximum output from 3528cc displacement: 160.5PS / 5200rpm, maximum torque: 28.98kgm / 2600rpm, maximum speed: 185km / h Reached.
The mission comes standard with Borg Warner 3-speed AT and power steering,
The suspension was F, an independent wishbone torsion bar, R was a semi-elliptical leaf, and the brake was F, a disc, and R, a drum.
The appearance was changed to a Rostyle wheel with a pair of fog lights added under the headlights, a thin line drawn under the side moldings, and a black chrome-plated periphery.

IRELAND/NORTHERN IRELAND: PEACE DEAL REFERENDUM PREVIEW
English/Nat
It's not just the people of Northern Ireland who will vote on the peace deal agreed in the historic Good Friday accord.
People living south of the border in the Republic of Ireland will also have their say.
And there appears to be overwhelming support for the deal in the south.
The Good Friday Agreement alters two articles in the Irish Constitution claiming sovereignty over Northern Ireland.
But that change requires the consent of the people of the Republic of Ireland before it can become law.
On Friday it will be put to the vote - at the same time as the referendum on the deal in the north.
Ireland's prime minister is one of the architects of the Good Friday peace agreement.
He has been campaigning for a positive vote since the deal was struck.
UPSOUND: (English)
Well we're looking forward to a good turnout. I think we're going to get an overwhelming 'yes' vote. We've campaigned in the country up and down and my party will turn out in huge numbers. We see it as a comprehensive, balanced, inclusive and fair agreement.
SUPER CAPTION: Bertie Ahern, Irish Prime Minister
But although the 'yes' vote looks set to be overwhelming, there is still opposition from hardliner republicans who will accept nothing short of a united Ireland.
In the I-R-A plot in Belfast's Milltown cemetery there's a memorial to the Republican hunger strikers who died for that cause.
Bobby Sands, who was jailed for his involvement with the terrorist organisation wanted to be seen as a political rather than criminal prisoner.
He was the first to die after refusing food and is seen by supporters as a martyr to the cause.
Sand's sister lives in the border town of Dundalk and is the vice chair of the 32 county sovereignty committee.
She is opposed to the agreement and will vote 'no' on Friday.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
The reason why I feel cannot produce the peace we all desire is the fact that it never addressed the cause of the problem. It hasn't even dealt with the symptoms and its only when the cause of the problem is dealt with that we will see the lasting peace that we desire. And that cause is the illegal interference by Britain into the affairs of our country and the imposed partition of our country maintained by force and the threat of force by Britain in our country.
SUPER CAPTION: Bernadette Sands McKivett, Sister of IRA hunger striker
But the latest opinion poll from the republic suggests the yes vote will be massive.
71 per cent of those questioned said they would vote 'yes' - with only six per cent against.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Woman: We're voting yes.
Man: We're voting yes.
Q: Why is that.
Because its the only hope for peace in Ireland.
SUPER CAPTION: VOX POP
SOUNDBITE: (English)
The Republic needed to amend its Constitution to make it acceptable to northern unionists. So I believe it is the right thing to do. And I actively support it. I'm concerned there should be a strong vote in Northern Ireland which will be more than fifty per cent.
SUPER CAPTION: VOX POP
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It's the way to go. We obviously need a very clear and decisive position.
Q: Do you think it has the potential to bring peace?
Absolutely, I come form the north but I think that a lot of other people don't unfortunately share that position.
SUPER CAPTION: VOX POP
Campaigning in the Republic has been low-key compared to the north.
Posters are the only visible sign of the impending referendum - which has drawn its high profile critics.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
SUPER CAPTION: Conor Cruise O'Brien, writer
But most are hopeful the Good Friday Agreement will finally bring to a close a turbulent period in Ireland's history.
