STORYLINE

Louisiana's countryside was arguably hit hardest by hurricanes Katrina and Rita - but the plight of its residents was largely forgotten amid the storms' dramatic aftermath in neighbouring New Orleans.

The hurricanes left little more than abandoned animals and destroyed homes and farms in the Plaquemines Parish area, part of Louisiana's bayou landscape.

But while the world's attention focused on the recovery operation in New Orleans, the parish remained a wasted zone of debris where homes and businesses once stood.

Abandoned farm animals, stray pets and even exotic trophy fauna like elk roamed freely through the flooded land on Tuesday.

The road from the parish capital, Belle Chasse, to Port Sulphur, some 50 miles (80 kilometres) south, through the flooded bayou, is an obstacle course of water, downed high tension power lines and debris.

Travelling through the area is difficult and sometimes dangerous.

While work has resumed on clearing the levees of grounded barges and pumping out the saturated fields in the surrounding areas, it has been a frustrating endeavour marked by the setback of renewed flooding in the wake of Hurricane Rita.

For now, the area will remain uninhabited while workers clear debris and try to pump out the worst of the flooding.

Authorities are hoping the water will drain away naturally through evaporation and favourable tides.

Scientists use massive river model to fight erosion

US Scientists working on new ways to battle the erosion that threatens Louisiana's coastline have a dramatic new tool: a massive replica of the lower Mississippi River.
The multi-million US dollar model, complete with flowing water, aims to isolate the best areas to divert nutrient-rich river water and sediment into rapidly-eroding marshes.
STORYLINE:
Lake Hermitage in Louisiana is a popular destination for residents and wildlife alike.
But the fragile coastline around the old fishing village is under threat from decades of erosion while also facing rising seas from climate change.
Coastal erosion has gotten so bad on the Louisiana coast, that saltwater intrusion from the Gulf of Mexico has killed off almost all the trees in areas that were thriving decades ago.
Lifelong Louisiana resident Clay Boudreaux says he has watched the land surrounding the Lake Hermitage area where grew up slowly disappear.
The marsh was so healthy and so established. There were no open bodies of water like you see now, until you got to Barataria Bay. But our estuary was either marsh or it was a defined bayou.
Boudreaux says that today, Lake Hermitage is only a shell of the paradise he remembers as a child.
And now here we are, fifty, sixty years later, and there's not a live oak tree back here. For five miles off the highway away from the river, that used to be fed by the river, now nothing. Nothing's alive other than the trees that we've planted in our yards, he adds.
Louisiana is estimated to have lost 2,000 square miles (5,180 square kilometres) of coastline since the 1930s - that's about the size of Delaware.
The bald spots, saltwater has gotten in on them, and it's just eroding away at the foundation of the islands that are left. So, everything collectively combined is just attacking our marsh to the point where it's not surviving, says Boudreaux.
But help may soon be on the way.
Scientists working to battle the erosion have a dramatic new tool - a massive replica of the lower Mississippi River.
The Louisiana State University's (LSU) Center for River Studies is home to the newly opened Lower Mississippi River Physical Model, a 10,000-square-foot reproduction of nearly 200 miles of the lower Mississippi from the town of Donaldsonville northwest of New Orleans to the Gulf of Mexico.
The model will help experts study one of the most important rivers in North America and how sediment can be used from it to fight coastal erosion.
Not only can we model the flows and the river stages or the water levels in the Mississippi River, we can also model or simulate the transport or the movement of the Mississippi River sand down the river. And we can do all of that in roughly one hour to replicate one year on the river, says Clint Willson, the LSU professor who heads the Center for River Studies.
The model is made of high density foam panels strong enough for people to walk on. Data about the dimensions and shape of the Mississippi River and surrounding topography were put into a computer and then used to cut the panels.
When visitors walk into the second floor to look down on to the model they can feel the moisture coming from the roughly 6,000 gallons of water floating on the model that replicate the river, the Gulf of Mexico and the various lakes and bayous along the coast.
Tiny particles of plastic injected into the water mimic the sediment coursing through the Mississippi River. And they can raise the water level to replicate rising seas.
The new model, housed just a stone's throw from the actual Mississippi River, is already attracting worldwide attention.
The Delta region of southeastern Louisiana was built over centuries on sediment that washed down the river.
