If you are intending to play a round of golf in Langkawi or are heading there on an extended golf holiday then you must play the Ernie Els, The Els Club in Langkawi is earning rave reviews with its spectacular scenery, cooling jungle environment, immaculately presented course and very attentive staff. Some spectacular holes beside the sea.
This is a wonderfully presented course in pristine condition under the management of Troon Golf so you can expect service of the highest standard. With jungle lining the fairways on most of the holes Ernie has decided that the local flora and fauna is enough of a challenge and has decided not to have any bunkers on the course unless of course you count the beach which runs close to some of the holes! The problem with this approach is that many of the holes are very similar and it’s only when you get close to the beach that you will play holes that will stick in your memory. There are few man-made water hazards on the course and the natural stream which meanders through the course and appears, sometimes unexpectedly, is enough to catch you out.
One great feature of the Else Club Teluk Datai in Langkawi and especially because caddies are not always available is that all the buggies are equipped with a sophisticated satellite navigation systems which give you an aerial view of each hole and also gives accurate distances to the greens.
Very modern clubhouse with restaurant and bar looking over the course down to the sea. If you have time why not sample one of Ernie’s wines!

Worlds Greatest Golf Courses Ep2: The Els Club Teluk Datai Malaysia
The Els Club Teluk Datai can be found on the beautiful island of Langkawi, an hour’s flight from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
The local hotel by the same name, Datai Langkawi, is a short 10 minuite drive away.
The Teluk Datai is easily one of the most stunning golf courses to open in SE Asia. It features an 18-hole Par 72, 6,750 yard resort golf course designed by the “Big Easy” himself, Ernie Els. In his infinite wisdom, Ernie wanted to honour the natural surroundings, so the typical sand bunkers have been substituted by natural ‘hazards’ in the form of tropical vegetation, natural streams and inspired by the wildlife you are likely to spot during your game. The holes all carry names such as Dusky Leaf, Hornbill or Macaque Manor. All of these holes lived up to their respective names on my particular visit.
As you would expect, the facilities are excellent, with buggies equipped with GPS units, professional golf lessons provided by the Troon Golf instructors, a great driving range for warming up and practice as well as personalised bag tags with your name engraved. The course really does give a truly sophisticated game experience.
Nestled within a rain forest reputedly dating back millions of years, complete with towering lush tropical foliage, the holes meander their way down to the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea. There are two fantastic holes that quite literally play up to the sandy beach. The backdrop for the entire course is the Mat Chin Chang mountains, it’s no small wonder the club was bestowed the title the ‘World’s Best New Golf Course’ at the inaugural World Golf Awards held in November 2014 in Portugal and more recently #83 golf course in the World, voted by Golf Digest!
Given all the hilly terrain, the golf course is surprisingly flat on the front-nine. The cleverly designed sharp dogleg par-5 8th as a hole, is one of the best on the golf course. There are more elevation changes on the back-nine.The 15th for example, starts the excellent closing stretch with a wonderfully plunging 200ft downhill par-3. The cleverly designed sharp dogleg par-5 8th as a hole is one of the best on the golf course, as well as the tricky par-4 16th with its overhanging giant trees preventing a simple route to the green for any short tee shots.
After the 15th is the signature 16th hole, a 170 yard par-3 carry, over the Andaman Sea. Finally, it’s back to a very good uphill par-3 and then the terrific short par-5 closing hole allowing for a short walk to the Hornbill Cafe for a well deserved drink.
The course itself is managed by Troon Golf, which assures excellent service is provided to the highest of international standards. The Els Club Teluk Datai offers full facilities, which include; locker rooms, a Pro Shop and delicious food & beverages at the Hornbill Cafe. The Hornbill Cafe is a great place to relax pre and post games and is open to the public, so for the non golfers who would like to visit, it’s a great opportunity to enjoy a lovely meal with great service in a truly amazing setting.
Good quality golf equipment is available for hire and carts are included in the green fees. Caddies are optional and you are obliged to tip after your round. All the caddies at Teluk Datai are female and highly experienced. During my round I was saved from an embarrassing choice of club and managed a birdie thanks to my caddy, she was well worth the tip.
Green fees can be pre booked from as little as $115 per person (min 4 players). Given the high standards this Malaysian golf course offers, it should be added to everyone’s must play golf bucket list.
The Els Teluk Datai is so much more than golf as you know it, think of it more like golf meets nature at its very best.
