Egypt: The woman who lost half her face in 2016 Cairo church attack
Samiha Tawfiq Awad and her husband, Qalini, were seated in the respective women’s and men’s sections of Cairo’s St Peter’s Coptic Orthodox Church on 11 December, 2016, when a man ran into the women’s section and detonated the bomb strapped to his chest. The attack, which claimed 27 lives, also took away one side of Samiha’s face. On the other side, she can now neither hear, smell, nor see. Staff from the Christian charity Open Doors recently visited the couple in their Cairo flat. Footage from the visit was shared with World Watch Monitor.

Egypt (Listeni/ˈiːdʒɪpt/ EE-jipt; Arabic: مِصر Miṣr, Egyptian Arabic: مَصر Maṣr, Coptic: Ⲭⲏⲙⲓ Khemi), officially the Arab Republic of Egypt, is a transcontinental country spanning the northeast corner of Africa and southwest corner of Asia by a land bridge formed by the Sinai Peninsula. Egypt is a Mediterranean country bordered by the Gaza Strip and Israel to the northeast, the Gulf of Aqaba to the east, the Red Sea to the east and south, Sudan to the south, and Libya to the west. Across the Gulf of Aqaba lies Jordan, and across from the Sinai Peninsula lies Saudi Arabia, although Jordan and Saudi Arabia do not share a land border with Egypt. It is the world's only contiguous Eurafrasian nation.
Egypt has one of the longest histories of any modern country, arising in the tenth millennium BC as one of the world's first nation states.[14] Considered a cradle of civilisation, Ancient Egypt experienced some of the earliest developments of writing, agriculture, urbanisation, organised religion and central government. Iconic monuments such as the Giza Necropolis and its Great Sphinx, as well the ruins of Memphis, Thebes, Karnak, and the Valley of the Kings, reflect this legacy and remain a significant focus of archaeological study and popular interest worldwide. Egypt's rich cultural heritage is an integral part of its national identity, having endured, and at times assimilated, various foreign influences, including Greek, Persian, Roman, Arab, Ottoman, and European. Although Christianised in the first century of the Common Era, it was subsequently Islamised due to the Islamic conquests of the seventh century.
With over 90 million inhabitants, Egypt is the most populous country in North Africa and the Arab world, the third-most populous in Africa (after Nigeria and Ethiopia), and the fifteenth-most populous in the world. The great majority of its people live near the banks of the Nile River, an area of about 40,000 square kilometres (15,000 sq mi), where the only arable land is found. The large regions of the Sahara desert, which constitute most of Egypt's territory, are sparsely inhabited. About half of Egypt's residents live in urban areas, with most spread across the densely populated centres of greater Cairo, Alexandria and other major cities in the Nile Delta.
Modern Egypt is considered to be a regional and middle power, with significant cultural, political, and military influence in North Africa, the Middle East and the Muslim world.[15] Its economy is one of the largest and most diversified in the Middle East, with sectors such as tourism, agriculture, industry and services at almost equal production levels.

Thousands in the Egyptian capital Cairo have protested President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi decision to hand over two islands to Saudi Arabia.

King Abdullah died early on Friday at the age of 90 after nearly two decades in power.

???????? Why being a journalist in Egypt gets more difficult by the day | The Listening Post (Lead)
It has been eight years since the fall of Hosni Mubarak and the Arab Spring uprising that briefly liberated Egyptians and their media from life under the one-man rule. Fast-forward to the present day and President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi's government is doubling down, tripling down on controlling the news media - measures that rights groups say are unprecedented in the country's recent history.
For the first time ever in Egypt's history, those military rulers, who are almost half gods and immune against any kind of accountability or media criticism, found themselves being described in Egyptian media and social media as liars or deceivers or oppressors and they definitely didn't like that, explains Amr Magdi, a researcher at Human Rights Watch.
When a government wants to transform a media landscape the place to start is at the ownership level. ONTV is a channel that used to air lively political debates. Like many other outlets with new owners, it now toes the government line.
In 2016, the state intelligence agency, the GIS, launched its own channel, DMC. Then last year, the GIS was revealed to be behind an investment group called Eagle Capital that has bought six newspapers and websites, including a site Youm7, as well as ONTV.
It's like the CIA starting its own channel in the US, while quietly buying CNN and Buzzfeed, and hoping that no one would notice.
Sisi's government is touting a security discourse basically, explains Marwa Mazaid, comparative media and politics researcher at the University of Washington. The ownership by the intelligence agencies changed the editorial line in some of these private companies by actually either making it completely entertainment and just like movies and sports and such. Or advocating for a very pro-state, nationalistic, protective, kind of discourse.
The legal landscape is changing, too. Late last year, Egypt's media regulator, the SMRC, proposed a new law that would allow the state to block broadcasts and websites for breaking rules that were so ambiguously defined that hundreds of journalists, politicians and public figures petitioned for the abolition of a law that had yet to pass.
Among the laws that have: a so-called cybersecurity law, that under the pretext of stopping fake news, restricts online journalism and encourages service providers to collect and share data on users. And there's a new registration law requiring online news sites to pay more than $34,000 just to apply for a licence. If enforced, it will put many sites out of business and discourage others from ever starting up.
To make matters worse, the government's intelligence apparatus, They have now started infiltrating things like Facebook and Messenger and WhatsApp, points out Dalia Fahmy, an associate professor of political science at Long Island University. And if, for example, you forward messages on WhatsApp to several individuals, what you get is this dissemination of false information charged under the terrorism law. And so, this chilling of society and of activism, has now entered this realm of cyberspace where people cannot even report on reality.
With the margins of acceptable speech narrower than ever and journalists expected to demonstrate complete loyalty to the state, discerning truth in Egypt from propaganda, gets more difficult by the day.

King Salman bridge to link Egypt and Saudi Arabia
More than 20 agreements and MOUs were signed between Egypt and Saudi Arabia during Saudi King Salman's visit to Cairo this week, worth $25 billion. The one that attracted most attention is yet to be signed. It's concerns a bridge to connect Egypt and Saudi Arabia . Yasser Hakim looks at the benefit the bridge will be a benefit to both countries
How gold and silver is safer than holding paper money. An Egyptian story.
I want to point out how 8 EGP was equal to 1 Euro when I visited Cairo in April 2015, or better said it took 8 EGP to buy 1 Euro or 1 Dollar. Now that same Egyptian needs 20 EGP to buy a Euro. The average Egyptian lost 150% of his savings in the past 2.5 years. This is what can happen when Central Banks and Governments who mean well cause unintended consequences. In Egypt's case they stopped pegging their currency to the Dollar and allowed it to float freely. Since the USD is the de-facto world reserve currency the US enjoys some protection from some events, but as the US goes deeper and deeper into debt, the chances that the US becomes a deadbeat become larger. Eventually I think China will float their currency and allow its value to increase and this will make imports for the US extremely expensive. Add (hyper-)inflation to the mix and it could happen in the US. Inflation is slowly eating away the value of the USD. Just look at what $100 could buy 30 years ago compared to now.

From Washington, this is VOA news. I'm David Byrd reporting. Authorities are investigating why a Russian passenger jet crashed in the Sinai, killing all 224 people aboard. At least 25 children are among the dead.
As Edward Yeranian reports from Cairo, the chartered plane went down less than half an hour after leaving the Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh on its way to St. Petersburg.
The Airbus 321 belonging to the Russian carrier, Kogalymavia Air, known as Metrojet, had lifted off from the Egyptian resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh and reached cruising altitude on its course for St. Petersburg, Russia's second largest city, when it disappeared from radar.
Al-Arabiya TV reported there were no survivors and said the Russian plane broke into pieces when it crashed.
Witnesses told Egypt's ON TV that the rear half of the jet's fuselage caught fire on impact and burned.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says President Barack Obama's decision to send special operations forces to Syria is focused only on fighting the Islamic State.
Speaking at a news conference in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Saturday, Mr. Kerry said the 50 special operations commandos will work with rebels in northern Syria and are not part of a larger U.S. involvement in that country's civil war.
It is focused exclusively on Daesh and on augmenting our ability to be able to more rapidly attack Daesh and do a better job of eliminating Daesh and its influence in that region.”
Kerry's visit to Kyrgyzstan was the first stop of a long-planned Central Asian tour that will take him to four other countries.
This is VOA news.
The United States has increased its support for Syria's opposition with a pledge of nearly $100 million in fresh aid.
Deputy Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced the assistance at the Manama Dialogue security conference in Bahrain Saturday.
The State Department said the money would be used for keeping schools open, restoring access to clean water and electricity, and supporting an independent media.
The United States has pledged nearly $500 million to the Syrian opposition since 2012.
U.S. President Barack Obama pleaded for peace between Israelis and Palestinians at a rally to remember slain Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.
Speaking by video to tens of thousands of Israelis who celebrated Rabin's life in Tel Aviv Saturday, Mr. Obama said the late prime minister's dream continues to inspire those who seek peace.
Former U.S. President Bill Clinton, who worked directly with Rabin, told the crowd that the prime minister was a model for those who were seeking peace.
Whenever there was a terrible incident here and I would call him, he simply repeated what we in the White House came to know as Rabin's law -- we will fight terror as if there were no negotiations, but we will negotiate as if there were no terror.”
Elsewhere in Israel Saturday, Palestinian protesters battled with Israeli police as thousands attended the funerals in Hebron for five teenagers killed by Israeli forces when they tried to attack Jews.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for urgent action to address attacks on non-combatants, including hospitals and schools, in conflicts around the world.
Speaking in Geneva Saturday, Mr. Ban said that such attacks cannot be thought of as normal parts of war.
These violations have become so routine there is a risk people will think that the deliberate bombing of civilians, the targeting of humanitarian and healthcare workers, and attacks on schools, hospitals and places of worship are an inevitable result of conflict.”
Ban and International Committee of the Red Cross head Peter Maurer issued a statement calling for respect of international humanitarian law.
The statement comes after 30 people were killed and 37 injured in U.S. attacks on a Doctors Without Borders hospital in Afghanistan earlier this month.
And Triple Crown-winning horse, American Pharoah, won his last race, taking the Breeders' Cup Classic in Kentucky Saturday. The win made American Pharoah the first horse to win the Triple Crown and the Classic in the same year.
He is now off for stud fees.

(in answer to a question on whether the US military aid to Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States conditional and directed against Iran)
The United States is determined to assure our allies that we are going to be reliable in helping them to meet their security needs. We have a lot of interest in common in this region; the fight against terrorism and extremism, and protecting the gains of peace processes of the past, and in extending those gains to peace processes of the future. So it makes perfectly good sense that this positive agenda on the diplomatic side, and I want to emphasise there's a very active now and intensive diplomatic process in place too, that that diplomatic process too would be accompanied by efforts to help our allies defend themselves against any threats. It's a positive agenda, it's not aimed at anyone.

11. SOUNDBITE: (English) Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Egyptian Foreign Minister:
The American military assistance to Egypt has been a going concern over the last two and a half decades. It started almost in 1979 and it continued for the next ten years, as the Secretary has indicated. (US envoy) Bill Burns will be indicating this as he comes to the region.
12. Mid shot of news conference
13. SOUNDBITE: (English) Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Egyptian Foreign Minister:
That, we have been trying to do over the last four years, and we have been, as Egypt, been hosting many conferences, in this city, Sharm el-Sheikh, to reach a certain international, regional understanding how to bring Iraq as one unit to the point of stability. We have been also calling for the non-interference of any foreign powers into Iraqi affairs, and that is something we would renew.
14. Mid shot of news conference
15. SOUNDBITE: (English) Condoleezza Rice, US Secretary of State:
I think (US) President (George W.) Bush made very clear that the reason to have an international meeting is to advance the progress of the two parties toward a two-state solution. No one can have a discussion, no one can have a negotiation in lieu of, or in place of, the parties. This is something that the parties have to do. But there can be international efforts to support diplomatically what the parties are doing.

STORYLINE:
The United States won no specific new promises of Arab help for struggling Iraq after a gathering on Tuesday of several nations listed as recipients of an expanded aid and weapons package for friendly states in the region.
Iraq's Arab neighbours repeated a general pledge to promote stability in Iraq, torn by more than four years of war and bitter sectarian divisions that have killed thousands and driven far more from their homes.
Rice and Defence Secretary Robert Gates are making a rare joint show of diplomatic force during two days of meetings with Arab allies - part of an 11th-hour effort to rally diplomatic and practical help for the U.S.-backed Shiite-led government in Baghdad.
The tour also opens talks on a proposed U.S. arms package for Arab states worth more than 20 (b) billion dollars.
The sophisticated weaponry, according to U.S. officials, would strengthen relatively moderate Persian Gulf regimes against extremist regimes and ideologies, chief among them Iran.
something we would renew.

Qatar and Egypt officials discuss reconciliation: Sources
Egyptian and Qatari intelligence officials met in Cairo to discuss a possible reconciliation as part of Saudi efforts to broker an end to the 18-month standoff over Doha's support of the Muslim Brotherhood, security sources said.
They said Qatar's intelligence chief, Ahmed Nasser Bin Jassim al-Thani, discussed plans for a meeting between the Egyptian and Qatari heads of state in Riyadh next month.
Gulf Arab countries agreed in November to end a long-running dispute with Qatar over its promotion of Arab Spring revolts.
Saudi Arabia, which has showered Egypt's government with billions of dollars in aid over the past year-and-a-half, has pushed for a similar rapprochement between Qatar and Egypt.
Qatar was a backer of elected Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood. Ties between the two countries deteriorated after then-army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi overthrew Mursi last year and cracked down on the Brotherhood.
Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE list the Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation and consider it a threat to their ruling systems. To Egypt's irritation, Qatar has sheltered exiled Brotherhood leaders.
Like Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain, Egypt withdrew its ambassador to Qatar this year. While the others agreed to normalise ties under the November deal, Cairo has yet to follow.
Evidence has mounted in recent days that Saudi mediation could reach fruition.
On Saturday, Sisi - now president - met a special envoy of Qatar's emir.
The was followed by an announcement on Dec. 22 that Qatari-owned Al Jazeera television - which denies Egypt's charges of being a Brotherhood mouthpiece - had suspended broadcast of its Egypt-focused channel.
The suspension and diplomatic flurry has raised expectations that Egypt might free three Al Jazeera journalists jailed on charges of spreading lies to support a terrorist organisation, a reference to the Brotherhood.
It was unclear if the journalists' case was discussed in the Qatari intelligence chief's talks with Egyptian officials, which took place on Dec. 22.
But Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said on Wednesday the case of Australian Peter Greste was under consideration by high levels of the Egyptian government and she was hopeful of his release by the end of the year.
Sisi has been reluctant to interfere in judicial cases but suggested last month he might pardon Greste, Canadian-Egyptian Mohamed Fahmy, and Egyptian Baher Mohamed.
The sources said Qatar's intelligence chief also met senior Egyptian foreign ministry officials. A ministry spokesman was not immediately available for comment.
Neom Will Destroy the Red Sea
Saudi Arabia intends to built a new city along 450km of the Red Sea. The coral reefs of the Red Sea are considered the last healthy ones on our planet after mass bleaching events in recent years decimated marine life and coral in reefs all over our planet.
To build a huge city on the Red Sea would be devastating to these magnificent reefs. Saudi Arabia also intend to build a huge bridge between Saudi Arabia and Egypt with underwater foundations. These foundations will be built on coral reefs, and whichever ones will be left alive would suffer shading and debris.
We oppose the building of the bridge, which many say is completely unnecessary, and we demand that environmental specialists be involved in the planning.
Tell Neom and @UNESCO you oppose Neom as it is currently planned with our #OurOfAir hashtag.

The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system[1][2] composed of over 2,900 individual reefs[3] and 900 islands stretching for over 2,300 kilometres (1,400 mi) over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometres (133,000 sq mi).The reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia.
The Great Barrier Reef can be seen from outer space and is the world's biggest single structure made by living organisms. This reef structure is composed of and built by billions of tiny organisms, known as coral polyps. It supports a wide diversity of life and was selected as a World Heritage Site in 1981.labeled it one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The Queensland National Trust named it a state icon of Queensland.
A large part of the reef is protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which helps to limit the impact of human use, such as fishing and tourism. Other environmental pressures on the reef and its ecosystem include runoff, climate change accompanied by mass coral bleaching, and cyclic population outbreaks of the crown-of-thorns starfish. According to a study published in October 2012 by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the reef has lost more than half its coral cover since 1985.
The Great Barrier Reef has long been known to and used by the Aboriginal Australian and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and is an important part of local groups' cultures and spirituality. The reef is a very popular destination for tourists, especially in the Whitsunday Islands and Cairns regions. Tourism is an important economic activity for the region, generating over $3 billion per year,Reads More :
