Walks in Sussex: Exploring Blackdown Hill - Part One
Ed Warren and I are clambering over the highest point in Sussex. At 917 feet above sea level the views from Blackdown Hill are incredible. Armed with his stills camera, Ed and I, head over in search of the various viewing platforms, while at the same time exploring some of the hill's history.
In 1967 an Iberian aeroplane with 30 passengers on board and 7 crew flew straight into the hill, killing everyone. Alfred, Lord Tennyson had his summer retreat up on the hill and visited a spot called the Temple of Winds regularly.

SURREY IN OLD PHOTOS PART 2 by jason blackman
hi i spend a lot of time making these small films of when the days were a lot different. most of the photos are from old books or old post cards. i love doing this to show you how life was way back then. some people can not buy books or find things to do with local history so this is why i have done this for all of you.
i do not do this to make money in any way, it is just for free so i do hope you all like the small films i do as it takes a long time to do. i did use to live in SW London but now moved to bucks where i find this is much better for me and my family.
all the best --- Jason Blackman.
Palladio's Treatise
Charles Hind shares how Palladio's treatise redefined the nature of publishing architecture and how it positioned his work within the continuum of ancient Roman architecture.

The Greensand Way - Betchworth to Buckland
I am continuing my ad hoc jaunt along the Greensand Way in Surrey with the lovely Matthew Holdsworth. This time we pick up from where we left off in Betchworth, a tiny village at the foot of the Surrey Hills and walk to Buckland to the ancient church there.
Wikipedia tell us: The Greensand Way is a long distance path of 108 miles (174 km) in southeast England, from Haslemere in Surrey to Hamstreet in Kent.[1][2] It follows the Greensand Ridge along the Surrey Hills and Chart Hills. The route is mostly rural, passing through woods, and alongside fruit orchards and hop farms in Kent and links with the Stour Valley Walk near Pluckley in Kent. The trail was opened on 15 June 1980 and is jointly managed by Surrey and Kent Councils who fully updated it in 2012 (route, waymarking, online guide).

Godalming
Godalming is a historic market town, civil parish and administrative centre of the Borough of Waverley in Surrey, England, 4 miles SSW of Guildford, traversing the banks of the River Wey in a hilly, heavily wooded part of the outer London commuter belt and Green Belt which is the Greensand Ridge. Godalming is 30.5 mi southwest of London and shares a three-way twinning arrangement with the towns of Joigny in France and Mayen in Germany. Friendship links are in place with the state of Georgia and Moscow. James Oglethorpe of Godalming was the founder of the colony of Georgia.
Godalming is regarded as an expensive residential town, partly due to its visual appeal, favourable transport links and high proportion of private housing. In recent years it has been ranked the UK's third most desirable property hotspot, voted the fourth best area of the UK in which to live and judged in 2013 to have the highest quality of life in Great Britain.

What's it like to work in a call centre? Joanna Biggs on her new book, All Day Long
The job of a call centre adviser is just one of many Joanna Biggs examines in her new book, All Day Long: A Portrait of Britain at Work.
What is it like to be a fishmonger, a sex worker or an Orthodox rabbi? Or a banker, a research scientist or a carer? How do our jobs affect our lives, beliefs and happiness? And what happens when we don’t work?
Biggs has travelled the country to find the answers, talking to interns and bosses, professionals and entrepreneurs, thinkers and doers. She takes us from Westminster to the Outer Hebrides, from a hospital in Wales to the industrial Midlands, introducing us to the different worlds of work and the people who inhabit them.

Exploring The Serpent Trail from Fittleworth in West Sussex
Today I am exploring a special and fascinating long distance trail that runs through the heart of West Sussex.
The Serpent Trail is a 64-mile long distance footpath. It runs from Haslemere to Petersfield, which are 11 miles apart in a straight line, by a route which is designed to join up the many heathland areas on greensand in the western Weald. The path takes its name both from its serpentine shape and from passing through habitat of all three British species of snake (adder, grass snake and smooth snake).
I have joined the trail half way through at Fittleworth and I am heading north.

This is the last part of our exploration of the Serpent Trail for now. We started near Fittleworth in West Sussex, but have only explored a tiny part of the 64 mile long distance path.
This time Julia and I emerge from woodland into a large heath with heather and gorse on the Greensand Belt. We hope we have whetted your appetite to have a look for yourselves. Do let us know what you think.
