Places to see in ( Frankfurt - Germany ) The Hauptwache
The Hauptwache (English: Main Guardroom) is a central point of Frankfurt am Main and is one of the most famous plazas (German: An der Hauptwache) in the city. The original name Schillerplatz was superseded in the early 1900s. It lies to the west of Konstablerwache with both squares linked by the Zeil, the central shopping area of the city.
The baroque building which gave the square its name was built in 1730. It was the headquarters of the city's Stadtwehr militia when Frankfurt was an independent city state (→ Free City of Frankfurt) and also contained a prison. In the 18th century Frankfurt still had city walls and its own army. Until 1864 the place surrounding the building was called Paradeplatz reflecting its military function.
In 1833 during the Frankfurter Wachensturm, the Hauptwache and the Konstablerwache were stormed in a failed effort by a small revolutionary force of native citizens, among others Gustav Koerner, and some people from different locations in Germany. When Prussia annexed the city in 1866 and took over military activities, the Hauptwache lost this role.
The prison remained and the Hauptwache also became a police station. In 1904, the building was used as a café and remains one to this day. It was the scene of the Hauptwache incident when French troops opened fire on students protesting against the French occupation of Frankfurt on 7 April 1920. Heavily burned in World War II bombing, it was reopened in a provisional form with an altered roof in 1954. In 1967, with the building of the U-Bahn tunnel through the city, it was dismantled so it could be moved and rebuilt over the new underground U-Bahn station.
The plaza has undergone another major renovation when the S-Bahn station for suburban trains was opened in 1978. Today, Hauptwache station serves as one of the most important crosspoints of the Frankfurt public transport system. Eight of nine S-Bahn lines serve the station as well as six of nine U-Bahn lines.

Frankfurt am Main, commonly known simply as Frankfurt, is the largest city in the German state of Hesse and the fifth-largest city in Germany, with a 2010 population of 688,000. The urban area had an estimated population of 2,295,000 in 2010. The city is at the centre of the larger Frankfurt/Rhine-Main Metropolitan Region which has a population of 5,600,000 and is Germany's second largest metropolitan area.
In English, this city's name translates to Frankfurt on the Main (pronounced like English mine or German mein). The city is located on an ancient ford on the river Main, the German word for which is Furt. A part of early Franconia, the inhabitants were the early Franks. Thus the city's name reveals its legacy as being the ford of the Franks.
Situated on the Main River, Frankfurt is the financial and transportation centre of Germany and the largest financial centre in continental Europe. It is seat of the European Central Bank, the German Federal Bank, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and the Frankfurt Trade Fair, as well as several large commercial banks. Frankfurt Airport is one of the world's busiest international airports, Frankfurt Central Station is one of the largest terminal stations in Europe, and the Frankfurter Kreuz (Autobahn interchange) is the most heavily used interchange in Europe. Frankfurt is the only German city listed as one of ten Alpha world cities. Frankfurt lies in the former American Occupation Zone of Germany, and it was formerly the headquarters city of the U.S. Army in Germany.
Frankfurt is considered an alpha-minus world city,as listed by the Loughborough University group's 2008 inventory,is ranked 21st among global cities by Foreign Policy's 2008 Global Cities Index and is an international centre for commerce, finance, culture, transport, education, and tourism. According to the Mercer cost of living survey, Frankfurt is Germany's second most expensive city, and the 48th most expensive in the world. Frankfurt also ranks among the top 10 most livable cities in the world according to Mercer Human Resource Consulting.

Frankfurt am Main Hauptwache CHRISTMAS MARKET HD
Frankfurt Christmas Market is one of the most important and largest in Germany, with its tradition, about 200 booths and an attendance of about 3 million people. Framed by the scenes of Roman Mountain and the historic St. Paul's Church, the resulting complex and creatively decorated stalls in the interaction of all the details and one of the finest and most beautiful Christmas markets.
The Christmas market sets a new stage in front of the Roman accent. A new concept, which makes the stage outside of performance times for the presentation platform enhanced the festive atmosphere and the Christian tradition of the Christmas market. The stage is modeled on a stable and becomes a life-size nativity scene.Guidofrankfurt

Layover in Frankfurt - GERMAN FOOD, Doner Kebab, and Sightseeing in Frankfurt, Germany!

Frankfurt is home to Lufthansa Airlines, one of the biggest in Europe. Not only can you fly on Lufthansa to visit Germany, but there are many connecting flights and therefore many layovers in Frankfurt.
So what should you do with a long layover in Frankfurt, Germany?
I had something like 15 hours, but even having 8 hours would be plenty of time to get to the center or Frankfurt for some sightseeing, German food and walking around.
First step is to get out of the airport and catch the train into the center of Frankfurt - that can be a little confusing as Frankfurt Airport is kind of confusing. Anyway, navigate your way to the train station at the airport. There you can buy a ticket - I bought a 5 people group ticket for 16.60 EUR. They had other pricing options as well.
Frankfurt (Main) Hauptwache - This is the center of Frankfurt and it took about 15 minutes from the airport.
Römerberg - Just a 10 minute walk from Hauptwache station is Römerberg, the historical center of Frankfurt and a wonderful public square to walk around and do some sightseeing. But we continued walking to find some German food - specifically Frankfurt food.
Gaststätte Atschel - This restaurant specializes in local Frankfurt German food. We ordered a number of dishes including apple wine and Frankfurter sausages with sauerkraut which are delicious and a food you can’t miss. Total price - 47.60 EUR
Köylü-Döner - Just down the road from Gaststätte Atschel is Köylü-Döner, one of the best places in Frankfurt for a Turkish doner kebab which is very popular in Germany and absolutely delicious. Price - 4.90 EUR
The Holy Cross Brewing Society - Finally, just a last minute decision, we had a coffer at The Holy Cross Brewing Society which was wonderful. After coffee we headed back to Frankfurt Airport to catch our flight.
If you have a layover in Frankfurt, Germany, go out and explore and eat some food!
