SECRET OF EDIPSOS. Roman Baths Adventure in Evia, Greece by ANN_TIQUE.
*????????*
As an eternal adventure seeker, I couldn’t have missed the opportunity to explore something ancient, mystical and well-forgotten????????♀️
⠀
And so, as I promised, I’m sharing with you the reportage about the secret of Edipsos - Roman baths with healing thermal springs that were mentioned as far back as in the times of Aristotle, Plutarch and Strabon ~1st century of Common Era.
⠀
In Roman Times, thermal water was considered to be spiritual and healing from all the diseases. The bath area flourished and its healing springs were regularly visited by the Roman emperors: Hadrian, Septimus Severus, and Marcus Aurelius.
⠀
But during the Byzantine era, they were destroyed for being an area of paganism. And since those times most baths have been keeping preserved. Only locals know the true story and still continue to regularly visit the hot springs and get revitalized.
⠀
Interesting, right? For me, it’s just mind-blowing to touch something that has been existing for more than 2000 years… Feels like I used a time machine????????
⠀
Would you visit such a place? Or maybe you’ve already met something ancient in person?????
⠀
HUGE HUGS,

⠀

Best Sea Spa Resort: Edipsos Wellness Hot Springs, Evia island - Greece | top attractions
Wellness, healing, and revitalising waters for a holistic spa holiday in Evia
The baths at Edipsos in Evia have been attracting illustrious visitors for millennia. Emperors like Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius & Constantine the Great came to this small city in Evia to be healed by its waters. Aristotle himself tried to unlock the secret of their therapeutic powers. More recent celebrities who took long soaks in its restorative pools include jetsetters like Onassis, Callas, Greta Garbo, Omar Sharif, plus countless Greek politicians, shipping magnates & artists. Why not take a dip yourself? You don’t have to be a VIP to enjoy the springs’ timeless benefits.
What to do:
This is the place where you’ll shed your daily preoccupations and say goodbye to stress. You’ll feel rejuvenated, your mental clarity will be restored and you’ll leave with a spring in your step and a sparkle in your eye. This holistic spa in Evia contains more than 80 springs of varying temperatures in a location where lush vegetation grows right down to the sea. At its several public and private hydrotherapy centres, and in the pools of the town’s hotels, many have found relief from chronic ailments. You can choose sea water or mineral water, mud baths, massages or simply bathe in the sea at spots where the springs pour into it.
Thermai Sylla Wellness Hotel: luxury in style
You’ll feel pampered the moment you step into this luxurious hotel. Not only is it housed in what was the resort’s first hotel, a magnificent listed building from 1896, but it’s ranked among the world’s ten best wellness centres by Conde Nast Traveler.
A gift from the Gods
The therapeutic properties of these waters were a source of inspiration for mythology. An ancient Greek myth has it that the goddess Athena asked her brother Hephaestus to create the Aidipsos springs, so that her favoured hero Hercules could rest here after each of his tasks. It is also said that the goddess Hera advised Deucalion and Pyrrha to shower in the warm waters in order to produce plentiful and healthy children. Soon after, Pyrrha gave birth to Hellen, the mythological progenitor of the Hellenes.
Hidden gems:
Edipsos: a journey back to the Belle Epoque
A leisurely stroll along the waterfront at Loutra Edipsos will lead you straight into the turn of the last century. Imposing period architecture is all around you; all that’s missing are the long dresses, bustles and top hats of yesteryear. That deep red building, the old Agioi Anargyroi Hydrotherapy Centre in the heart of town, is a work of Ziller, the 19th century celebrity architect.
You may also inspect the baths and caves of the Roman general Sulla, one of the most significant attractions in the area, located behind the National Tourist Organisation’s hydrotherapy facilities. And then amble out onto the boardwalk of the Kyma hotel for a magical view of the sunset over the gulf.
Sports:
Some activities are water-related, like scuba diving from the Edipsos Diving Centre and fishing, but you can also enhance your wellbeing by hiking and mountain biking here in the heart of Evia.
Edipsos has to be one of the most amazing resorts in the world. There are more than eighty individual springs ranging from 28 to 86 degrees centigrade. These springs are said to be effective in curing problems such as rheumatoid and inflammatory arthritis, degenerative arthritis, spondylo-arthritis, myalgia, neuralgia, lumbago, neuritis, backaches, tendonitis, vessel diseases, diseases of the endocrine cycle and post traumatic inflammation.

Edipsos is not a new phenomenon. Even though few travelers from other countries have never heard of it the cosmopolitan atmosphere combined with the healing spas have attracted reknown politicians, artists, writers and other notable people like Winston Churchill, Aristotle Onnasis, Maria Callas, Greta Garbo and Omar Sharif. But it is mentioned in the works of Aristotle in his Meteorological, and by Ploutarch and Strabon. The town even minted its own coins. In Roman times the area flourished and its healing waters were visited by the emperors Hadrian, Septimus Severus and Marcus Aurilius. The baths from the Roman period are the best preserved and are known as Syllas Baths. During the Byzantine era it was destroyed for being an area of paganism though it was visited by the Emperors Theodosious and Constantine the Great.

My trip on Pozar thermal baths in Greece 22/11/2015
A revitalisation of the senses in the birthplace of Alexander the Great
Imagine yourself in a pool amidst precipice rocks, natural waterfalls and wild vegetation. Feel the soothing warmth of the water (37⁰C) taking the strain off your body, and let your eyes wander around the verdant gorge of the water stream of Áyios Nikólaos (Saint Nicolas) locally known as Thermopótamos (= hot river). In the springtime, breath in the galore of natural aromas in a feast of green, where even the branches of the trees (mainly planes and willows) are all covered with covetous ivy. In the winter, relish the stimulating sensation of the 37 degrees in the outdoor pool, the stunning turquoise spot that stands out in the white and cold.
In the pregnant with history district of Pella, the capital of the Kingdom of Macedonia, the eternal beauty of Greek nature will embrace your desire for wellness and healthiness.
Home to your sensational holiday will be Loutráki, also known as Pózar, an area situated at 110 km from Thessaloniki and only 40 km from Edessa, the capital of Pella and one of the most beautiful cities of Greece thanks to the water streams that run through it and rush over the cliffs to form two waterfalls, with the higher and more spectacular one at 70 m.
At the foot of Kaimaktsalan Mountain, the thermal baths facilities of Pózar comprise 48 individual baths, 6 indoor pools, the outdoor pool (12x25m) hamams, jacuzzi and spa services. North Evia: Driving Loutra Edipsou
Loutra Edipsou (also Edipsos, Aedipsos, Aedipsou) is located in the northwestern part of Evia. It is one of the best known spa resorts in Greece, famous for its hot mineral springs which flow directly into the sea, with temperature ranging from 34 to 70 C.
The resort is popular mainly among elderly people who come here to cure bone and joint diseases. The springs are also suitable for healing gynecological problems. There are many guest houses and hotels of all categories, as some of them offer spa procedures. The village has a nice seaside alley with restaurants, cafes and pastry shops. The small harbor connects Loutra Edipsou with Arkitsa on the mainland.
The beach is long and narrow. The mineral springs can be found in the south end where they pour out from peculiar rock formations. On some places the water has carved small natural pools in the rocks and people use them as bath tubs.
