The Bahamas dream time
The Bahamas dream time
The Bahamas or The Bahama Islands, is an archipelago consisting of about 2,000 islands if you include the cays, which are small islands that are formed on coral reefs. Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas. It lies on the island of New Providence, with neighboring Paradise Island accessible via Nassau Harbor bridges. A popular cruise-ship stop, the city has a hilly landscape and is known for beaches as well as its offshore coral reefs, popular for diving and snorkeling. It retains many of its typical pastel-colored British colonial buildings, like the pink-hued Government House.
Arawak natives inhabited the islands when Christopher Columbus first set foot in the New World on San Salvador Island in 1492. British settlement of the islands began in 1647; the islands became a colony in 1783. Since attaining independence from the UK in 1973, the Bahamas have prospered through tourism and international banking and investment management.
The biggest event in the Bahamian calendar is 'Junkanoo', a street parade held on Boxing Day (26 December) and New Year's Day (1 January). The official language spoken in the Bahamas is English, however the dialect and slang is difficult for most Westerners and Europeans to understand, especially on the out islands.
Cable Beach is lined with resort hotels and upscale boutiques. Downtown, Bay Street is the main shopping hub. Its Straw Market sells handcrafted items such as conch-shell jewelry. The city’s dining options range from sophisticated restaurants to surfside conch shacks. Queen’s Staircase, whose 66 steps were cut from limestone by slaves in 1793, leads up to Fort Fincastle, built the same year, with sweeping harbor views. Paradise Island is home to large resorts with amenities like water parks and casinos. On the north shore is 3km-long Cabbage Beach, known for its broad, white-sand shore and turquoise waters.

Welcome to Clifton Heritage National Park
Welcome to Clifton Heritage National Park. On the west side of New Providence (Nassau) we have an underwater park. This statue is 18 feet tall and is an easy swim from shore
Ocean Atlas is the world's largest underwater sculpture
Sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor designed Ocean Atlas, a 60 ton, 18-foot high sculpture that lies beneath the sea near New Providence in the Bahamas. It represents a young girl holding the weight of the ocean.
Taylor has several underwater projects around the world, including a display at Museo Atlantico in Lanzarote in the Canaries, which is believed to be the first underwater museum in Europe.
His statues are made from Ph-neutral materials. This allows them to gradually transform into an artificial reef and morph with the marine environment.

Junkanoo Festival - The Bahamas - Culture & Travel - On Voyage.tv
Visit for the best HD travel videos in the world.
Junkanoo is a national celebration of Bahamian culture that is over 200 years old. Though many visitors to the Bahamas arent aware of this party in the streets, director of Educulture Bahamas, Ltd., Arlene Nash Ferguson shares the history and importance of this tradition in everyday Bahamian life. Its said that Junkanoo began under British law, when slaves were allowed three days vacation around Christmastime each year. Taking full advantage of this break from hard labor, they reclaimed their humanity through an African festival. Since then, this celebration of life and the peoples endurance has continued and become a mainstay in local culture. Two celebrations take place, one Christmas night and the other New Years morning. Full of energy and vibrant dancing, the costumes worn are a central focus of the festival. Although the materials used have changed throughout the years, from sponges found on the floors of the ocean to newspaper and tissue, and now, crepe paper, the amount of craft involved has stayed the same. The crepe paper is placed onto cardboard one piece at a time and the costumes are layered with crafty details, making this a year-long preparation. Arlene spreads this important history and heritage to local school students, teaching them about the national pride the Junkanoo celebration instills.

Rebuilding after Hurricane Dorian, Man O War Cay, Abaco, The Bahamas
If you are visiting the Bahamas you must check out Man O War Cay close to Abaco and Marsh Harbor. An Island of great heritage and historic significance that has many hidden gems to be discovered. Home to a very small population, this island is rich in history and residents that will make you feel like family.
I was fortunate enough to stay a week and assist in rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Dorian 2019. Take a walk with me through the Man O War Cay Bahamas Heritage Museum and Coffee Shop. I encourage you to make this a destination in your travels.

Queen's Staircase Bahamas Landmark
Nassau, Bahamas - On Wednesday January 3rd 2018 A visit to the Queen's Staircase in Nassau. Carved out of solid limestone by slaves, the Queen’s Staircase is still considered a great feat of architecture and construction. The stairs were created between 1793 and 1794 and were later named for Queen Victoria to acknowledge her 65 years of rule, honoring her for her drive to abolish slavery. There is 65 steps lead to Bennet’s Hill, about 102 feet above. The staircase is a picturesque destination and a useful one, cutting out much of the journey for those wanting to reach Fort Fincastle and the Nassau Water Tower.
