First Basin pool opens for summer 2018-19
The First Basin pool at the Cataract Gorge will open to the public tomorrow.
Lifeguards will begin patrols every weekend from Saturday, December 1, between 11am and 4pm.
From December 22, lifeguards will be on site every day between 11am and 4pm, except Christmas Day.
The pool will close once school goes back in mid-February next year. This is about a fortnight earlier than usual, and will ensure our crews have time to prepare the Gorge to host the Qantas Tourism Awards on March 1.

This Southern Cross News story highlights the Australian Pool Life Saving Championships, 2015 held in Hobart Tasmania. Competitors were tested in a range of life saving events including: the line throw; manikin tow; and responding to simulated emergency situations. The event was a great opportunity to shine the spot light on Australia's pool Life Saving heroes.

Royal Life Saving Tasmania teaches children to swim from Karadi Aboriginal Corporation
Royal Life Saving Society Tasmania recently conducted a Swim and Survive program for the Karadi Aboriginal Corporation at The Hobart Aquatic Centre. Thirty students, aged 5-14 years participated in the program, which aimed to build water confidence, while teaching the children valuable life skills in swimming and water safety. The program was part of Royal Life Saving Society – Australia’s Swim and Survive Fund initiative, which provides opportunities for children experiencing social or economic disadvantage to learn to swim.
