EXPLORING COLCHESTER WITH THE DIPPY DETECTORISTS
EXPLORING COLCHESTER WITH THE DIPPY DETECTORISTS
Armed with just a tour guide booklet we set off round the historic Roman city of Colchester exploring its sights and fruitful history.
Leggett finds a water tower built with Norfolk bricks after our county did a deal with the Romans. To store water for consumption was not it’s only perk though as he reveals how it was used as a weapon during war. He also walks through the remains of a Roman Church, an amazing building now protected by our Police force.
Miller stumbles upon Britain’s largest surviving Roman gateway and explains why the Hill Giants modified the wall to further their protection. Not only does he land himself with a Mr Whippy ice cream, he explains how William the Conquer built Colchester Castle, a building still standing proud after almost 1000 years.
Blur, twinkle twinkle little star and Dermot O’Leary feature in the first episode of this blockbuster series.

Leap Castles History
Leap Castle has long been regarded as one of Ireland’s most notoriously haunted destinations. Located in Coolderry, County Offaly, Ireland, this historical structure has garnished worldwide attention and has been featured on a number of television shows catering to an audience with a fascination for the supernatural including Ghost Hunters and TV’s Most Haunted. But what is the history behind this infamous castle and what is at the root of its sinister reputation?
The dates related to the construction of Leap Castle are a bit ambiguous. Some say the castle was erected in the 12th century while others claim it came to exist in the 15th century. Whatever the timing of its origin, Leap Castle was built over an existing site previously occupied by druids who used the property for initiation ceremonies. Leap Castle was originally named Leim Ui Bhanain which means “Leap of the O’Bannons” which leads to the origin of its name and the calamitous circumstances surrounding it.
The O’Bannons were an affluent clan from County Tipperary. As the legend goes, two of the O’Bannon brothers were contesting the chieftainship of their family. In order to determine who would be reigning chief, the siblings challenged each other to leap from a rock where the castle was to be built. The sole survivor would not only govern the clan but also be responsible for the castle’s construction….and so began Leap Castle’s saga of bloodshed.
The O’Bannon rule over Leap Castle was not a long one, however, as the O’Bannons were subservient to the O’Carroll clan, a ruthless and domineering sect fueled by greed and power. The O’Carrolls’ seizing of Leap Castle launched a gruesome legacy of carnage that left a supernatural scar at the core of the castle’s menacing reputation. According to legend, many a massacre took place within the walls of Leap Castle at the hands of the O’Carroll clan

Man ignores museum rules, touches priceless Clock which falls from wall and smashes
Visitor accidentally destroys museum clock: CCTV video at National Watch and Clock Museum shows timepiece falling from a wall.
This is the excruciating moment a priceless clock falls from a museum wall and smashes into pieces after a curious visitor touches it and knocks it off its hook.
The CCTV footage was posted online by employees at the National Watch and Clock Museum, in Columbia, Pennsylvania, where the incident took place.
Written alongside the clip is the warning: 'This is why we beg and plead with our visitors to please refrain from touching objects in museums.'

Time Team Special 15 (2004) - The Crannog in the Loch (Loch Tay, Perthshire)
Time Team's Tony Robinson visits Scotland in order to observe a group dive led by Nicholas Dixon onto a collapsed but well-preserved iron-age loch dwelling. Also participating are six Field School archaeologists who will learn the basics of an underwater dig. The Oakbank Crannog they work on is located in the north-east of Loch Tay in Perthshire, where more 18 submerged crannogs have now been identified. A working example has now been reconstructed about a mile away on the south side of the loch at the Scottish Crannog Centre. The crannog itself is dated to about 600BC, and evidence shows it was rebuilt some six times of over the next 200 years. The anaerobic conditions help preserve the many wooden and organic artefacts recovered and now displayed or recreated at the Centre.

Time Team Special 13 (2003) - Big Dig, The Hole Story (Canterbury, Kent)
Covers the Big Dig, where some 5,000 participants were encouraged to explore some of the archaeology in areas local to them. Alongside them, some 250 archaeologists volunteered their time to assist in the digs - although not everyone agreed with the project. Test pits, a 1 meter by 1 metre square hole some 60 centimetres deep were initially dug, with each process involving removing some 10 cm at a time. During the dig, some 1,200 pits ended up being dug, revealing rich layers of previously unknown archaeological evidence and finds, including stunning new insights into long lost communities. 43 pits were dug, for example, in the village of Great Easton, Essex, pushing back the dates of finds to the Roman era. Similar finds occurred in places such as Boxworth, Warrington, Stogumber, and Middlesbrough, all yielding important evidence for the post-excavation analysis record.

The Hole in the Wall Waterfall
This amazing waterfall is near Port Alberni, on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The location is shown at the end of the video. The hike to get to the falls from the Alberni Highway isn't that long, and very much worth it. The waterfall empties into Roger Creek.

September 12, 2015 - CT ENL / Ingress End of Summer Meetup, Colchester edition
Some of the locals probably wondered what the heck was going on with a large group of people walking through town today, wearing green and staring at their phones or iPads. Tourists? Really weird conference call on foot?
Nope. This was all for a game we play called Ingress, made by Google and Niantic Labs, all in the spirit of good clean fun. A total of 17 agents from the Enlightened faction showed up across the span of the day (some earlier, some during the walkabout, and some later on). Colchester, CT has several portals (checkpoints where one can either gain digital items, or perform certain actions like link portals to each other to make fields, or other neat things). While some are clustered together, many are within a fair walk of each other, and nearly all were accessible by car.
The struggle may be real, but in my opinion, the friendships made and kept are more real than that. Thanks to weaselsnot863, shivanii, diashi, monkeynuts, Katnork, Davnor, Skootch, ayytee, nickiasaur, crownofthorns, imaginedrgn, Photomonty, JakHammond, bonzork, beinuppity, darkpaisley, and dustyasterisk for coming out to play, meetup, and paint the town green.
Great work, guys, and thanks to Erranteris and segoots14 of Resistance for the good sportsmanship and for giving us the opportunity for an encore before heading off on our separate ways. ;)
Time Team Special 7 (2001) - The Island of the Eels (Ely, Cambridgeshire)
Time Team has been following an excavation in Ely, Cambridgeshire, for a 90-minute documentary screened on 17 May. It has uncovered a remarkable picture of Ely in past centuries: channels where boats used to moor to load and unload goods; a medieval kiln with huge quantities of high-quality pottery finds; and a number of buildings fronting the road at Broad Street.
