GREECE monasteries in the west of Crete (hd-video)
We visited a number of monasteries (moni): agia triada / prophitis ilias / preveli / jesus christ of halepas / timios stavros / asomatos.
Most of them are kept well and you have to pay a small entrance fee.

Holy Monasteries of Crete
Crete, like the rest of Greece, has hundreds of monasteries scattered across its four administrative regions. Some of these monasteries have been closely linked with the war of independence (1821 - 1828) like Arkadi Monastery or the invasion of the German army (1941 - 1944) like Prevelis Monastery. Monasteries are a pole of attraction not only for Greek Orthodoxs but also for foreign visitors that come into thousands in Crete.
Crete's Most Famous Monastery - Preveli
The monastery of Preveli is an historical landmark on the island's southern coast that is a 'must-see' for visitors and tourists down that way. Located on the beautiful hillsides that define Crete's south side, stunning views of the Med can be had during your touring stroll of the monastery grounds - and it's not too far from the fabulous Preveli beach.
The history of this monastery is impressive, dating back to the Venetian times, then being rebuilt after initially being destroyed when the Ottomans took rule of Crete.
Preveli Monastery was known to have housed those that would organize rebellions against the Turks, then again held historical significance during the Battle for Crete in Word War II.
The museum inside the monastery has some very, very old and impressive artifacts and dated written works, but the 'no cameras allowed' rule put a damper on capturing some for the video.
It's not my goal to go pissing off the Monks of Preveli.
What a beautiful location, and man - what a history!!!
Enjoy!!!

Gouverneto Monastery or Our Lady of the Angels is a Greek Orthodox monastery in the Akrotiri peninsula of the Chania regional unit of Crete, Greece, located about 5 kilometres north of the Agia Triada Monastery.Dated to 1537 , the monastery is a Venetian style fortress with towers at each end with some Baroque influences added later. It measures roughly 40 metres by 50 metres and contains some 50 monks’ cells on two floors. It is reputed to be one of the oldest monasteries in Crete, and a 1637 census, recorded shortly before the Turkish invasion, revealed that at the time there were 60 monks living in Gouverneto Monastery, also making it one of the largest in Crete at the time.

Abandoned Monastery in the Mountains Near Chania Crete - Katholiko and Gouverneto Monasteries
Katholiko Monastery is one of Crete's hidden treasures, and it's not too far from the popular Chania airport on the Akrotiri peninsula. Estimated to be about one thousand years old, the hike down to this monastery provides some impressive views of the gorge where Katholiko is built - and some sweet sites of the Mediterranean water into which we take a cold dip.
The journey begins with a mountain drive to the Gouverneto Monastery, not too far from the Chania airport, taking a gander at the awesome landscape along the way to one of Crete's oldest monasteries.
Once arriving at Gouverneto Monastery, we stroll through the historic grounds and head inside for a look at some relics of the Greek Orthodox Church being held inside the refurbished compound.
The next phase takes us out the back gate of the compound for a rocky hike down the mountainside before arriving at a very old abandoned harbour for a dip in the crystal-clear but oh-so-refreshing Mediterranean Sea.
On the way back we come across the thousand-year-old Katholiko Monastery, one-time home of St. John the Hermit. Katholiko would be the oldest Monastery in Crete at roughly 1400 years old, but it's thought that much of its structure was actually built in the 1500s or so.
Regardless, built into the side of a mountain in the Avlaki Gorge on the Akrotiri Peninsula, this one takes your breath away. We stroll through the grounds of Katholiko, leaving a donation for the Monks after lighting a candle, then ringing the bell - just because it was so tempting.
An historic day was had and this hike is one that anyone staying near the Chania airport can enjoy.
Enjoy the video, and I hope you appreciate these sites and the history as much as we did!!

Monastery of Chrysoskalitissa, Elafonisi
The monastery Chrysoskalitissa, 73 km away from Chania, was built during the Venetian Occupation on the site of the old monastery of Agios Nikolaos. It is built on steep rocks with a view of the Libyan Sea. Tradition says that one of the 99 steps is gold, but the sinners are not able to see it. This is the reason why the monastery was called Chrysoskalitissa.
The icon of Virgin Mary that is in the monastery, is estimated to be more than 1000 years old and fetes on August 15th. It is of two aisles and consecrated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary and to the Holy Trinity. Near the monastery, at the beach, a small settlement of anglers was found from the Middle Minoan Period.

Historia 99 Ascetów którzy przybyli z Egiptu i wszyscy zmarli jednego dnia, zgodnie z wcześniejsza zapowiedzą. A my odkryliśmy tam również historię kilku tragicznie zmarłych kóz.
