MONASTERY OF SAINT PAUL EGYPT
The Monastery of Saint Paul the Anchorite dates to the fourth century AD. It was founded over the cave where Saint Paul the Anchorite lived for more than eighty years. The first travel narrative of the monastery was provided by Antoninus Martyr, a native of Placentia, who visited the tomb of Saint Paul the Anchorite between the years 560 and 570 AD. The first monks to occupy the monastery were some of the disciples of Anthony the Great after they knew the story of Saint Paul the Anchorite it might have been occupied by Melkites for a short period , but they were followed by Egyptian again and Syrian monks. The Syrians may have had a sustained existence at the monastery, for it appears that they also occupied the monastery during the first half of the fifteenth century, after which their presence disappeared. According to an isolated Ethiopian reference, the 70th Coptic Orthodox Pope, Pope Gabriel II (1131–45 AD), was banished to the monastery of Saint Paul the Anchorite for three years.
Like most of Egypt's monasteries, this one suffered repeatedly at the hands of Bedouin tribes. The most destructive of their raids was in 1484 AD, when many of the monastery's monks were killed and the library was put to the torch. The monastery was later rebuilt under the patronage of Pope Gabriel VII of Alexandria (1526–69 AD), who sent ten monks from the Syrian Monastery to populate the monastery of Saint Paul the Anchorite. During the second half of the sixteenth century, the monastery was again attacked and ransacked twice by the Bedouins, forcing the monks to finally leave. The monastery remained deserted for the following 119 years, only to be repopulated by a group of monks from the Monastery of Saint Anthony under the patronage of Pope John XVI of Alexandria (1676–1718 AD), who promoted an extensive reconstruction of the monastery in 1701 AD.

The Virgin Mary Church in Maadi:
This church was built as a dedication for the Virgin Mary, it was the place where the holy family started their trip to upper Egypt by boat.
There were many names for this place during the history. At the beginning, it was known as Meniet El Sudan, then Bustan El Adawia, El Martouti which were greek words that mean The Mother of the Logos . However, the name of El Adawia Monastery has been repeated throughout the years and is still mentioned in Publications up till now. This church is further identified by the the Virgin's Church of the Ferry. In fact, the recent name of that modern suburb, Maadi,is derived from the Arabic word which means the Crossing Point.
From outside the church, there are three ancient domes, located at the east above the three altars. Then you will find an entrance which lead by a corridor to the Church itself. Then to the Nave which contains many ancient icons, the altar screen and an ancient well of water, then to the Chapel which contains a general Icon of St.Mary, the Holy Bible which was found floating on the River Nile by the ancient steps and four caskets containing relics of saints. There is also the Baptistery, ancient Tunnel. There are also in the east Northen building of the Church Ministry which contains; the conference and meeting rooms, Library, Audio visual Aids, Church Council Room and the guest room for pope and Bishops. This Church contains the main thing the church built for, which is the Steps used by the holy family. It is believed that this church has been used by the Holy Family who were accessible to pilgrims through the church's courtyard.
It is said that a miraculous nature occurred on Friday the 3rd of the Coptic month of Baramhat - the 12th of March - 1976 . A Holy Book was carried by the lapping ripples of the Nile to the bank below the church. It was open to the page of Isaiah declaring, Blessed be Egypt my people . The Bible is now behind glass in the sanctuary of the Virgin in the church for all to see.

Egyptian Coptic Christians Celebrate Virgin Mary Feast Day
Every August, tens of thousands of Egypt’s Coptic Christians and Egyptian Muslims take buses and trains to the Virgin Mary Monastery in Assiut. The monastery is believed to have been visited by the holy family when they fled Israel out of fear of persecution by King Herod. Only a few thousand people were able to visit this year after authorities suspended the traditional celebrations for security reasons and also banned Muslims from attending the event. Hamada Elrasam reports.

Monastery of Deir el Muharraq/ Манастир Света Богородица Ел- Мухарак
This monastery is situated about sixty-five kilometres south-west of Assiut. It is the largest monastery in Upper Egypt, long known for its charitable work among the villagers. Unlike many desert monasteries that are totally isolated, Deir el Muharraq is located at the edge of the agricultural land; the monastery buildings are contained within a surrounding wall of irregular shape.Deir el Muharraq belongs to the group of monasteries founded by St Pachom (Aba Bakhum in Arabic) and his successors. According to tradition, the Church of the Blessed Virgin was the first church to be built in Egypt. It was built on the site of a cave where the Holy Family is said to have stayed for three years. Biblical scholars and historians agree that it was in a cave at Deir el Muharraq that Joseph dreamed that an angel of the Lord appeared, informing him of Herod’s death and bidding him to take Jesus and Mary and return to Palestine.
