Liz and I are working on contacting as many channels in as many different locations as possible. This collab is open to anyone, anywhere. Answer the questions and tell others about the collab.
Our goal is to have a video from each country, and each region or state or providence of each country. The Homestead Park
Suitable for children and family viewing Homestead Park is 1.5 miles west of York City Centre. It was opened in 1904 by English social reformer Benjamin Seebohm Rowntree, son of Joseph Rowntree. He was owner of Rowntree’s Chocolate Factory and I think we all love their Kit-Kat!! The fields behind his house would be made available to children attending York schools for outdoor activities but in the late 1970s the house was converted into offices and is now the head office of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
Leaving the small car park, go through the gate and follow the tree-lined avenue with signs leading to Herbaceous and Prairie borders, Medieval garden, Circle garden, with shrub borders also to Backhouse Pond, Rock garden and the Main lawn. The beautiful Formal Garden theme this summer was based on “Winnie the Pooh” and those who know the stories will recognise the characters there. There is also a children's play area and just outside the main garden is a Wildflower meadow when in season and a Bog Garden also Woodland with an extensive range of native and ornamental trees.
Piano music: - “Try To Remember” by Harvey Lester Schmidt (1929-2018)
Music for:- “Winnie the Pooh” in the Formal Garden is called “Children’s Games” Suitable for Children and Family viewing
13 Years Living Off the Land - Man Shares REAL Homestead Experience
Peter from TreeEater Farm & Nursery ( in BC shares the challenges and lessons learned from his experience earning a living off the land for 13 years with his partner Magdalene.
Peter moved to a piece of land in British Columbia's Gulf Islands as an idealistic 22-year old who wanted to save the world and reduce his environmental footprint by growing his own food, building his own shelter, and producing his own fibres for clothes. Magdalene joined him a few years later.
To make this homesteading project financially viable, the couple has had to experiment with different revenue streams, including community supported agriculture (CSA) vegetable box programs, hand forged tools, meat animals, dairy cows, and selling fruit and nut trees, as well as plenty of off-farm work as well.
After a steep and labour-intensive learning curve, Peter has realized that living off the land can be very expensive, that it can be difficult to earn an income from agricultural products — especially if your land isn't situated in an area with a market for your product nearby, and that living off the land requires a lot of infrastructure & maintenance — all of which costs time and money. And they aren't even trying to be off grid.
It was refreshing to get such an honest look behind the scenes of what appears to be a utopian lifestyle: living in a hand built timber frame home with a cozy wood stove, and eating fruit and nuts from your own island orchard's trees, and to know there's quite a big financial and physical struggle to make it all happen.

A model has created an oasis in the middle of New York City by cramming 500 plants into her apartment. Self confessed “crazy plant lady” Summer Rayne Oakes decided to turn her Brooklyn apartment into a forest after her roommate moved out six years ago. Since then she has expanded the collection in her 1,200 square foot apartment and now has more than 150 plant species including a full forest wall, pineapple plants and even a banana tree.

Top 9 States - Best State For Off Grid Living
Live Life DIY is about being self-reliant, self sufficient, and independent. You creating a fun, happy, lifestyle of freedom. Live Life DIY is the life you have always wanted to live, your dream lifestyle.
What are the best states for off grid living? What key aspect is most important to you? What should we think about when selecting a state to live off the grid? Is your favorite state on the list?
Self-Reliant and Living a Self-Sufficient Life
Do you dream of living self-sufficient and self-reliant? Today, someone is going to begin the journey to living self-sufficient. Let it be you.
What do you think is the very best state for off grid living? How do we decide?
We should define what living off grid means. For me, the most basic of definitions and probably the most widely accepted definition is living without relying on public utilities. That’s pretty much it.
What does living off grid mean to you?
How do we decide what’s the best state to live off grid? A lot of, best place to live off grid lists, focus on the weather. I’d like to live in Hawaii for sure, the best weather ever, but it’s a pretty darn expensive state to live in and most of us folks just aren’t going to be able to swing it. Cross Hawaii off my list. Yes, weather is important, Sun for solar and a steady predictable wind too. Good weather means different things. For a garden a long growing season, but if you like fall and winter activities you might want cooler weather.
I’m looking at things like low land prices. Low property and other taxes. Overall cost of living, we have to be able to afford to live there in the first place. Then things like the quality of the land, crime rates, and friendly off grid laws and regulations. You might be interested in schools or homeschooling if you have young children.
What are the best states for off grid living using this set of basic criteria? We crossed Hawaii off the list. Let’s cross the other elephant in the room off the list too, Alaska. Most of us just aren’t going to be able to move there. Sure, it's a great off grid state, but it's harsh out there and what are the chances any of us can live that remote and that off grid?
Now we are down to the 48 states.
If you like the northern part of the country, I would say Montana, Maine, and Vermont are the three best options. These states have a lot of natural resources. Montana pretty much lets you do what you want, few restrictions, but it does lean toward the more expensive side of things. Maine and Vermont, in New England, have rather short growing seasons, especially, north and inland away from the expensive coastal areas. But they have plenty of all things one might need for off grid living.
If you like the northwest, you might consider Washington or Oregon. I’m not particularly fond of the mindset out there, civil liberties, and the regulations. Lots of strict building rules and regulations. But they might be a good off grid option if you want to be in that area. You will be looking well inland away from the coast, the Eastern parts for less populated and less strict living.
In the middle of the country, which is the place I think is the best of all worlds, two awesome states for off grid living are Missouri and Tennessee. Friendly to off grid living, low taxes, few regulations regarding what you can do with your property and civil liberties. Pretty good growing season and plenty of natural resources. The best of all worlds, if you ask me, pretty much everything. The only downside is making sure you are aware of and prepared for tornadoes and flooding.
In the south, states like Arizona and Texas come to mind. When you get away from the populated cities there are very few regulations. Costs are favorable which is great for us budget minded people. You are going to want to be careful to stay out of the desert areas. There are few natural resources and water in particular will be a challenge. Plenty of Sunshine for solar.
When you are looking for your forever self sufficient off grid home, do your research and carefully select the state where you want to live. This is a list of nine states, each a little bit different depending on what you want, what is most important to you? Is a garden important? Are chickens important? How do you want to spend your time? And how do you want to spend your money?
Ask yourself, if I live off grid, by whatever definition this means to you, will you be happy? It’s all about you living your self-sufficient life dreams, living happy fun loving and carefree.
Live life doing it yourself off grid.

Growing food with zero heating in Massachusetts' winter
Jonathan Bates is better known for the food forest him and his colleague Eric Toensmeier planted on their 1/10th of an acre urban lot in Holyoke, Massachusetts. When I visited him in February, most of the lot and its 200 plant species were still covered with snow, but Jonathan showed me around their eco-shelter. Thanks to good insulation and thermal mass, the passive greenhouse maintains above freezing temperatures all winter, and allows them to grow food throughout the year.
