Kato Paphos Archaeological Park in Paphos, Cyprus

Paphos Archaeological Park (also Kato Pafos Archaeological Park) contains the major part of the important ancient Greek and Roman City and is located in Paphos, southwest Cyprus. The park, still under excavation, is within the Nea Pafos (New Paphos) section of the coastal city.

Its sites and monuments date from prehistoric times through the Middle Ages. Among the most significant remains so far discovered are four large and elaborate Roman villas: the House of Dionysos, the House of Aion, the House of Theseus and the House of Orpheus, all with superb preserved mosaic floors, especially an Orpheus mosaic. In addition, excavations have uncovered an Agora, Asklipieion, Basilica, Odeion, Hellenistic-Roman Theatre, and a necropolis known as the Tombs of the Kings.

In 1980 Nea Pafos was inscribed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO for its outstanding ancient remains.

Nea Paphos was probably built by Nicocles, the last king of Paphos, at the end of the 4th c. BC. By the beginning of the 2nd c. BC it became the capital of the island, replacing Salamis during the Hellenistic era under the Ptolemies.

House of Dionysos
This exceptionally rich villa occupies 2000 sq. m of which 556 are covered with mosaic floors decorated with mythological, vintage and hunting scenes. Its is named after the god Dionysos who features on several of the mosaics.

Its rooms are arranged around a central courtyard, or atrium, which functioned as the core of the house. It was built at the end of the 2nd century AD and was destroyed and abandoned after the earthquakes of the 4th century AD.

A Hellenistic pebble mosaic representing the mythical sea-monster Scylla from an earlier villa of the 3rd c. BC which was found below the Roman villa is on display in situ.

House of Aion
Although only three rooms of this large villa have been excavated by the University of Warsaw, the mosaic floor from the House of Aion is considered one of the most exceptional works of ancient Roman art, if not the only work of its kind,[5] and certainly one of the most enigmatic and most fervently discussed by scholars. It dates from around the mid-4th century AD and is named after the god shown in the middle of the mosaic.

The main room was probably a triclinium or reception room. Two smaller rooms had excellent geometric mosaics.

The main mosaic contains 3 horizontal frames with 5 panels all surrounded by a geometric frame.

A villa wall was found collapsed into the adjacent street and has been restored.

House of Theseus
This exceptionally large villa was the residence of the Roman proconsul or governor, and was divided between rooms for official functions and those for private use. Its name derives from the beautiful mosaic of Theseus and the Minotaur found in the southeast quarter. The villa covered several insulae of the Hellenistic street plan.

It was built in the 2nd half of the 2nd c. AD over ruins of earlier houses and was occupied until the 7th c. AD. So far only the southern half of the villa has been fully excavated.

House of Orpheus
This villa lies to the west of the House of Theseus. The mosaics of the third century AD have three mythological representations: “Orpheus and his Lyre”, “Hercules and the Lion of Nemea” and “the Amazon”, but they are currently not on view to the public.

Theatre
The theatre, located in the northeastern area of the ancient city, is dated to originally the end of the fourth century BC and has been under excavation by the University of Sydney since 1995.

THE BEST MOSAICS IN THE WORLD!

Ahhhhh! I love mosaics and the Bardo Museum in Tunis has one of the world's largest collections. So naturally I had to go there to check it out. It was a massive collection of well preserved pieces and I spent a good amount of time in the large museum before heading off to the Medina to see what was going on around the markets.

Paphos is a town at the southwestern tip of Cyprus, between the coast and the Troodos Mountains. Paphos is renowned as the birthplace of Greek goddess Aphrodite and in the ancient times was the capital and main cultural city of the island. Modern-day Paphos is divided in two, with the upper section up the hill being the commercial center, and lower Kato Paphos containing the main archaeological points of interest and tourist services.

The local municipality has made great efforts in recent years to improve the lower Kato Paphos area, which combines hotels, bars and restaurants along a coastal strip a few km long. There is a newly built front/'promenade' leading round to the marina and a long coastal path with amazing views - perfect for a morning or evening stroll.

Paphos is made up of two areas: a) the lower town or 'Kato Paphos', by the harbour and most of the tourist hotels and nightlife and b) the upper town ('Ktima Paphos') which is the main administrative, commercial and modern shopping town for the region of Paphos. The market is in the upper town. Both sections are small enough to navigate on foot, although many people take the bus to travel up the hill from the harbour area. Buses are also available to reach Coral Bay, Polis and other local villages. However, it is easier to use a vehicle (bike/quad/car) to travel further into the Troodos mountains, the Akamas peninsula or go off the beaten track to find small villages in the hills. It gets hot and humid in summer (33 deg C and 90% Humidity) between late June and early September, so air conditioning can be welcome in the car then. The rest of the year is relatively mild but there are sometimes colder spells in January & February.

Paphos offers a wealth of dining choices. There are limitless choices from Chinese to Mexican, Italian to Indian. But the jewel in Paphos' crown is its traditional Cypriot mezze and seafood. Head to the harbour to sample freshly caught fish at one of the many seafood restaurants along the front. Venture into one of the many villages fringing Paphos town for authentic food andgreat atmosphere. Head towards the mountains, or call into Kathikas village where there are a multitude of traditional tavernas.

By the harbour stands Paphos Castle, originally a Byzantine fort built to protect the harbour. It was rebuilt by the Lusignans in the 13th century, dismantled in 1570 by the Venetians who were unable to defend it against the Ottomans, who in their turn restored and strengthened it after capturing the island. Saranta Kolones, Kato Paphos, near the harbour, is a castle built in the first years of Lusignan rule (beginning of the 12th century) maybe on the site of a previous Byzantine castle. It was destroyed in the earthquake of 1222.

UNESCO added the entire town to its World Cultural Heritage List. Among the treasures unearthed are the mosaics in the Houses of Dionysos, Theseus and Aion, well preserved after 16 centuries under the soil. Then there are the mysterious vaults and caves, the Tombs of the Kings, the pillar to which Saint Paul was said to have been tied and whipped and the ancient Odeon Theatre. Other places of interest include the Byzantine Museum and the District Archaeological Museum, with its attractive collection of Cypriot antiquities from the Paphos area, dating from the Neolithic Age up to 1700 AD. Near the Odeon are the remains of the ancient city walls, the Roman Agora and a building dedicated to Asclepius, god of medicine.

10. OMODOS VILLAGE
Omodos is located within the wine-making villages near the Chapotami River's west bank. Tall mountaintops surround the village, the tallest of which are Kremmos of Laona and Afames. A varied amount of fruit trees and vines are also cultivated in this area, including plum, apple, peach, pear, and apricot. There are also various areas that have not been cultivated and present a diverse collection of natural vegetation, giving the landscape an organic beauty. Kykkos monastery is adorned with decorations and antique exhibits made from precious metals such as gold, silver, brass, and bronze. Set on a mountain peak, you will need to bring your hiking gear if you want to reach this spot. The museum found at the centre will give you an account of the pre-Christian history contained in the manuscripts and other documents. At the end of your journey, settle down with a glass of wine, before descending. You might want to join locals and other visitors on August, 15 and September, 8 for the annual religious fairs.

Kolossi has played an important role in Cyprus’s history, with its surrounding land once used as sugarcane plantations. Today, the villages surrounding the castle are vineyards for the renowned Commandaria wine. The ruins of Kolossi include a kitchen, a sugar factory to the east of the castle, a fireplace and the castle’s main chamber. Additionally, you can extend your visit to the winery and villages to acquaint yourself with the traditional art of making Commandaria – one of the oldest named wines in the world.

Larnaca Salt Lake is a network of four salt lakes, and is home to several migrating bird species. In winter, the lakes are inhabited by the long-legged pink birds, flamingos, while in summer, high temperatures cause the water to evaporate, leaving salt crusts. Earlier, the salt was harvested and was one of the major exports of the island. It is located just 4 km (2.5 miles) from Larnaca International Airport.
