Húsavík Whale Museum introduction
A quick look into Iceland's only whale skeleton museum.
Husavik Whale Museum
The Húsavík Whale Museum is a non-profit organization established in 1997. The Húsavík Whale Museum is situated in Húsavík, a small town in north east Iceland, on the shores of Skjálfandi Bay, just below the Arctic Circle at 66° N. It began as a small exhibit on whales in the town’s hotel in summer 1997. Shortly after that, the exhibition was moved into the newly renovated part of the baiting shed at the harbor and the shareholding business “Húsavík Whale Centre ehf” was established. Due to the growing popularity, it was obvious that a larger and more suitable building was needed after only 3 years. In 2000, the town’s old slaughterhouse (built in 1931 and abandoned in the 1980s) was purchased, remodeled, and officially opened in June 2002. In 2004, the shareholding business turned into a non-profit organization and was renamed “The Húsavík Whale Museum.” By 2005, a comprehensive exhibition on the ecology of whales was added.

Whale Watching Husavik Iceland cinematic edit
dec. 13, 2018 , 3 days before the end of whale watching season for North Sailing in Husavik, northern Iceland, I went on that 3-hour cruise... it was dark, cold and didn't look promising... after all, it was just a few days before they would end the whale watching cruises for the winter... so would we see any whales ?

I highly recommend going on a whale watching cruise.. I've seen them in Akureyri and Husavik, and also killer whales in Grundarfjördur . Such amazing moments.

It happened -- I FINALLY SAW PUFFINS!!! And whales! And white beak dolphins! We sailed on a schooner into the Greenland Sea and felt like real explorers :D
The tour company we used is called North Sailing, but I'd also recommend checking out Gentle Giants. Both are comparable and eco-friendly!

HUSAVIK, ICELAND
This video takes you around the town of husavik, a walk in the harbour with its dramatic backdrop of snow capped mountains and the lovely church.
Húsavík is a town in Norðurþing municipality on the north coast of Iceland on the shores of Skjálfandi bay with 2,237 inhabitants. The most famous landmark of the town is the wooden church Húsavíkurkirkja, built in 1907. Húsavík is served by Húsavík Airport.
Income is derived from tourism and fishing, as well as retail and small industry. Until recently, Húsavík was the export harbour for silica that was extracted from nearby lake Mývatn.
According to the Landnámabók (Book of Settlement), Húsavík was the first place in Iceland to be settled by a Norse man. The Swedish Viking Garðar Svavarsson stayed there for one winter around 870 A.D. When he left the island in spring of 870, after a winter's stay, he left behind a man named Nattfari and two slaves, a man and a woman, and they established a farm here.[1] The name of the town means bay of houses which probably refers to Garðar's homestead. Which may have been the only houses then in Iceland.
Húsavík has become a centre of whale watching in Iceland due to whales of different species that frequently enter the bay. The Húsavík Whale Museum is located in the downtown by the harbour.

Husavik Saga Museum
Husavik is one of my favorite Iceland towns, a very small fishing village in the north and is the capitol for whale watching and they have two excellent museums, the Whale Museum and the Saga Museum, the Saga houses some interesting antiques from the older villages of Iceland, it has many animals and plants and even rocks of Iceland and some unusual artifacts from some of the ancient societies of Iceland.

Getting STUCK in the northern part of Iceland! ???? ????????
This vlog is all about the northern part of Iceland. In June 2019 we drove the whole ring road in nine days and explored the most iconic spots this country has to offer. Our route through the north of Iceland:
- Arrival at Reykjavík (Keflavík KEF)
- Kirkjufell mountain (western part of Iceland)
- Hvítserkur (oddly shaped stone in the sea)
- Hot spring at Grettislaug campsite (
- Goðafoss
- Húsavík: Whale Watching with North Sailing ( and The Húsavík Whale Museum (
- Mývatn Nature Bath (
- Krafla crater
- Krafla Lava fields
- Dettifoss
- Vestrahorn (Hofn) + getting stuck with our Cozy Camper ????
We've enjoyed Iceland very much so far. Make sure to watch the second part where we will drive through the southern part.
