Somalisa Camp, Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe
Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe, is home to some 35 000 elephants, as well as our award-winning Somalisa Camp ... where the intimate and humbling 'elephant drinking experience' is possible.
With the prestigious Design Africa Innovation Award in 2016 from We Are Africa as well as Zimbabwe's first and only Gold Certification from Green Tourism, Somalisa Camp is pioneering ecologically conscious tourism. Running entirely on solar power and recycling 80% of our water (thanks to Biorock Sewage Water Treatment as well as other practices), Somalisa Camp uses equipment suited for living with the smallest footprint possible. Along with efforts to minimise our environmental impact, there are some pretty incredible views! Watch this video for a look into Somalisa Camp and Somalisa Acacia, Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe.

Great Elephant Migration Safari - Wilderness Travel
Join us for a superb safari across the remote gamelands linking Botswana’s renowned Chobe National Park and the famed elephant stronghold of Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. Some 200,000 elephants roam this wild trans-frontier corridor, and we’ve timed our safari for the height of this epic migration. Our phenomenally knowledgeable safari guides will take us into rich gamelands unknown to most travelers. We’ll encounter massive herds of elephants and plenty of other wildlife including lion, rare sable antelope, African painted dog, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffe, and more. Our guides are the pioneers of Zimbabwe’s innovative community-based conservation program, which engages local communities in protecting the wildlife on their own lands by ensuring that they benefit economically from safaris. Our activities on this great journey are as unique as our lodgings, as we explore on foot, by 4WD vehicle, by canoe, from an underground “look up” hide, and even by mountain bike. From our first safari camp, Camp Kuzuma in Botswana’s northern Chobe region, we don’t even need to go out looking for wildlife—it will come to us at the camp’s fantastic waterhole, a magnet for elephant, buffalo, antelope, sable, giraffe, lion, and elusive leopard. At Nehimba Lodge, a mecca for thirsty pachyderms in the exceptionally diverse landscape of Hwange National Park, we might see as many as 500 elephants a day right at our lodge’s waterhole. At Jozibanini (“Jozi” for short), we’ll savor Zimbabwe’s most remote safari camp. Here we can even sleep under the stars, nestled on the viewing decks of our raised tents. We finish this amazing safari in style with a spectacular charter flight to Victoria Falls, where we have a 5-star stay at Zambezi Sands River Camp. We invite you on one of the most intimate, engaging, and unforgettable experiences possible in wild Africa. Come with us!

Africa 2019 - Mana Pools with Bushlife Safaris
Our 2019 trip to Mana Pools in Zimbabwe at Vundu Camp with Bushlife Safaris. Nick and his guiding team specialize in up close, intimate encounters with some of Africa's most iconic wildlife. This is not a safari for riding around in a truck having wildlife spotted for you. This is a highly interactive, full spectrum sensory overload safari. From tracking lions and wild dogs on foot to quite literally walking with elephants as they forage among the enormous flood plain acacia trees to dodging hippos while canoeing on the Zambezi this is a safari like none other.
For someone who has checked off the Big 5 from a safari truck and wants something more personal, demanding and exciting; it's hard to get more exciting than standing just a few feet from a bull elephant or falling a pride of lions on foot. If this is for you, check out Bushlife Safaris in Mana Pools, Zimbabwe. This was our fifth trip to Southern Africa and the four nights we spent with Nick and his team was quite simply the most amazing experience we have had to date.

Tree # 47 Historic Trees of Zimbabwe - the Teak at Hwange Safari Lodge
As part of his occasional series visiting the trees listed in Lyn Mullin's excellent book Historic Trees of Zimbabwe, Gus shows us a fine example of Baikiaea plurijuga, the Zambezi Teak, situated at the Hwange Safari Lodge in north-western Zimbabwe. This is one of the few remaining full-size examples of its type, the majority having been logged out in the early 20th Century to make railway sleepers.

Somalisa Acacia, Land of The Giants | FULL INSERT
When in the heart of Africa, what do you do? You go on safari, of course and could you possibly be in a more perfect part of our continent to do it?
Named after a local Nhanzwa chief, Hwange National Park is the largest in Zimbabwe and October is when the Kalahari sands and Acacia woodland of this great plateau are at their driest. Among the four hundred bird species and hundred mammals, the elephants are the stars of this show and as our private guide Lewis Mangaba told Lorna, it’s the reason why this is known as Land of The Giants.
We had the pleasure of being guests at Somalisa Acacia, so called for its situation here on an acacia island along these flood plains. Recently re-built, this year-round, intimate tented camp on a private concession, sleeps a total of fourteen and offers a wildlife experience in a class of its own.
It was after lunch that Lorna discovered the ‘Elephant Pool’ and just how close it gets you to these great wonders. The dry months are the best time to visit Somalisa. During the green season from December to March, animals are harder spot but the birding is spectacular. During our time there- the height of the dry season, it was an elephant parade.
This entire style of safari was begun by Beks Ndlovu. After a career as a high end, professional safari guide across Africa, ten years ago he established his first camp and today he has nine of them in three countries.
