St Augustine: The First City in America - Fake or Real?
We went to St Augustine to explore the first city in America. The city has a lot of history to it, and it's fun to walk around the old streets - a specific part of the city even had some people reenact the way they used to dress back in the days!
Morten went into a super creepy museum, full of ancient relics from around the world, weird taxidermies animals, sculls and other things like that.
St Augustine also has an old fort, Castillo de San Marcos, which we saw when the sun was setting and it was so beautiful. The city has some really cool old buildings, and it was tough to figure out what was real and what was fake. But it was a great experience with loads of things to see!

Chapter 12 Catholicism U.S. Church History Rap
Catholicism in the U.S. Rap
Look and see – it’s not a mystery,
The U.S. has a rich history,
From absolute monarchs and the English reign,
To Catholic missionaries from England, France and Spain.
First English settlers in the New World colonies,
Didn’t like us Catholics sailing overseas,
In fact, Lord Baltimore was forced to leave Maryland,
But that’s really the beginning of our mission without end.
In 1565 the Spanish left their mark,
In St. Augustine, Florida and the Spanish arc,
Through Southwest, Texas, up the Pacific Coast,
Spain would send two heroes whom they could boast-
Eusebio Kino, travelled to Santa Fe,
Converting Pueblo Indians along the way,
Junipero Serra, with faith, not superstitions,
Founded twenty-one California missions.
The French heard the call to “Go West Young Man”,
But pioneering woman would also settle the land,
Marie of the Incarnation would nurse and teach,
While French Jesuit heroes would explore and preach.
The Mississippi was discovered by Jacques Marquette,
Saint Jean de Brebeuf would cast a similar net,
Converting Indians in Maine, New York, and Ontario,
He knew the Holy Spirit would lead the way to go!
Saint Isaac Jogues gave the Iroqouis the nod,
But they “fingered” the friendly Jesuit for a fraud,
Against all odds, he would preach and barter,
He’s honored as a great North American martyr.
These are a just a few… of course, not all,
Like Jeanne Mance who established a Montreal hospital.
Marguerite Bourgeois for French missionary fame,
Would establish the Sisters of Notre Dame,
The French would pave the way for the pioneers,
And Catholicism grew throughout the years,
When Louisiana was purchased, it was considered a prize,
As the United States doubled in size.
In the colonies, Pennsylvania was the place,
Where Catholics would get a welcome Quaker embrace,
Until the Catholics fought with the Patriots,
The Revolution seemed to end that prejudice.
Bishop John Carroll was Superior,
Catholics would no longer be inferior,
American Catholics, both rich and poor,
Would have Diocese in Baltimore.
Since there was no Catholic disparity,
The American Sisters of Charity,
Led by Saint Elizabeth Seton, would set the rules,
And provide our nation with parochial schools.
One percent grew to 4 million strong,
But still there was something very wrong,
The Know Nothing Party hated foreign born,
And once again the Catholics were torn.
Honest Abe spoke out against this clan,
And wanted equality throughout the land,
He gave them a heart-felt speech of four score,
And freedom would come at the cost of Civil War.
At the end of the 19th century,
It really seems to occur to me,
There seems to be no religious dissection,
And we can do our part if we make the connection.

Most fossils are fossilised through a replacement of the tissues and the organic compounds within the bone. These actually are saturated with asphalt and there's been no change in the bone structure itself. Which is really great because what happens is that we have things within the bone like bone collagens and the building blocks of D-N-A, amino acids, things like that are perfectly preserved and haven't been altered through time.

STORYLINE:
United States palaeontologists have unearthed the prehistoric remains of ancient plants and mammals dating back 40-thousand years.
At the Rancho La Brea Tar Pits, the noise of city traffic can be heard as scientists dig deep into an era when Los Angeles was a coastal plain occupied by giant elephant-like mammoths and sabre-toothed cats.
Palaeontologists have uncovered the fossil remains of creatures trapped by black, sticky tar, thousands of years ago.
The tar, or asphalt, is actually a low grade of crude oil that occurs naturally in the region.
Pit-91 excavation manager Christopher Shaw said the tar acted as a unique preservative, trapping microscopic matter inside the bones.
Technicians detected D-N-A (deoxyribonucleic acid) inside the relics, providing modern day man with a genetic blueprint for animals that roamed the earth in the ice age.
Fossils have been recovered from the tar pits in the area known as La Brea near downtown Los Angeles since 1906.
During that time, more than one million (m) bones from more than 200 species have been recovered from La Brea's tar pits, billed as the only urban Ice Age dig in the world.
Last summer's dig produced more than 13 hundred fossil specimens ranging from mammals to plant remains of the ice age era.
The site is best known for the quality and quantity of its sabre-tooth cat remains, which are prominently displayed along with other fossils at the nearby Page Natural History Museum.
